Tips on African American Hair Care: Grow your Hair

 • Posted on January 7, 2010 at 7:07 pm

Monitor your hair styling products

Many African Americans resort to applying excessive amounts of heat, such as high kilowatt blow dryers, pressing combs, and flat irons to their hair. Likewise, a significant number of African Americans apply chemicals to their already dry hair, such as texturizers, relaxers, and hair coloring. Nevertheless, these same individuals apply additional chemicals to their hair when they use most over the counter, drugstore, or beauty supply hair care products. These products are usually filled with parabens (cancer-causing agents), sulfates (natural oil stripping detergents), silicones (dangerous chemicals), and alcohols or glycols (hair drying and damaging chemicals). Continued use of these products, although your hair may “feel” soft momentarily or be easier to comb, will only create fried, damaged, and porous hair. Further, you plan your or child’s health at risk when you use these products, not just your hairdo. Solution? Switch to using an all natural shampoo and hair styling products. Both Carol’s Daughter and Beauty 4 Ashes Christian Health & Beauty provide high-quality, all natural ethnic hair care products that are only filled with goodness for your hair type. In fact, in a double blind, three month, placebo-controlled study where 100 African Americans and 50 Biracial individuals participated, those who used Beauty 4 Ashes Christian Health & Beauty’s GodHead shampoo and conditioner and Puritea hair lotion, compared to the control group who used a synthetic based shampoo, conditioner, and moisturizer, experienced increased hair growth and health. 64 of the 75 in the Beauty 4 Ashes Godhead and Puritea group stated their hair was shinier, less split ends, more manageable, less tangled, and stronger. 57 of the 75 enrolled in the Beauty 4 Ashes group also reported hair growth of 2 inches or over. Only 15 of the 75 enrolled in the synthetic group reported increased moisture, shine, and health in their hair. However, 45 of the 75 in the synthetic based group reported scalp itching, dryness, and less manageability in their hair after use of the synthetic shampoo, conditioner, and moisturizer. Such evidence suggests that African American benefits from natural hair care product use instead of cheaper, synthetic based ones. You can find Beauty 4 Ashes products at wwwdiscoverb4acom.

Several reviews rank the products excellent for ethnic hair. But don’t stop here, there is more.

Monitor your hair styling methods

Put down the flat iron. If you must use it, try to only use it immediate after washing your hair. This will give your tresses relief from daily heat.

Allow your hair and scalp to receive oxygen. Do not leave your hair covered on end with a “do-rag.” Just as plants need oxygen to grow; your scalp needs air to thrive.

Stop using brushes. Ethnic hair has a tighter curl pattern and, although strong, can easily snap especially if stress is applied from a brush or comb to a dry head of hair. Instead of brushing your hair, buy a small tooth comb with smooth ridges.

Limit the use of glued in extensions, tight braids, tight cornrows, and hard, gel hairstyles. These only place an excessive amount of stress on the hair. If you do get braids or cornrows, alternate between wearing the hair out and braiding it on a weekly basis

Avoid coloring if possible. Coloring only damages the hair by coating it with hydroxides and alcohols. That alone should say enough.

So there is the scoop. If you can afford it, use Carol’s Daughter or Beauty 4 Ashes on your hair. Yes, they are more pricey, but your hair will thank you.

Troublesome Teen?

 • Posted on January 7, 2010 at 5:07 pm

Challenging Teens

The call is from a flustered parent rhyming off a litany of complaints about their teenaged son or daughter; drugs, alcohol, truancy, sex, smoking, shoplifting, vandalism, hanging out with the wrong crowd. The parent is focussed and organized by the youth’s misdeeds. The parent is seeking the magical solution: someone to speak with his or her child, such that the egregious behaviour is instantly curtailed. Typically, the belief is that the counsellor can wag an even bigger finger in the teen’s face, such that he or she finally gets it and mends his or her ways.

Sadly, when this kind of call is received, the teen is so far off kilter that correcting the course will be a drawn out process. The challenge for the parent is to withstand the process and for the parent to learn a new role in correcting their teen’s course instead of just concentrating on the behaviour in the moment. This can be more thorny than working with the teen as many parents have difficulty surmounting their own anger in view of the turmoil imposed by the teen.

The change the parent must learn to adopt is to move from a policing and corrections stance where one seeks to only address misdeeds and curtail behaviour, to one where the parent gains control of their own behaviour first, to then offer guidance and direction to their son or daughter. The only goal herein is for the parent to engage their son or daughter in more reasonable and wholesome activities.

In truth, telling a teen what not to do and harping on them for misdeeds and poor choices only keeps them mired in the mud. In lieu of this, parents must come to coach and coax their son or daughter towards activities inherently of interest to their son or daughter. They must help the teen join clubs, sports, recreational or creative activities that are fun. Do not view this as rewarding misbehaviour, but providing alternate activities to that which the teen was otherwise drawn.

More to the point, every minute spent engaged in a reasonable activity, is a minute away from the other nefarious activities. Further, all structured and organized activities are supervised. Hence, the teen is now under the guidance and direction of an adult, geared to facilitating skill development as per the area of interest. If your teen is amenable, join with him or her. Change the context of the relationship from punisher to collaborator. In so doing, resist harping on the issues of old, in favour of chatting about the new current activities.

In defensive driving terms, this is known as steering where you want to drive – crash avoidance. Steer towards the crash, and that’s what happens. Steer where you want to go and enjoy the ride as you achieve your destination.

In some situations, the relationship between parent and teen is so deteriorated that all manner of influence is lost and the teen cannot contemplate a change in direction facilitated by the parents. In such situations, parents may need to use an alternate source of influence. To this end, there may be a youth worker in a community-based program who may be helpful in engaging the teen in their program. Such programs may be available through the YMCA/YWCA, Boys and Girls Clubs, Salvation Army, church groups, etc. Call your local program and ask to speak with the youth worker. Explain your situation and see if the youth worker can invite and engage your son or daughter in their program. This means of “outreach” is designed to capture youth and reintegrate them into more meaningful activities with the support and guidance of the youth worker.

The goal remains the same: out-of-control, troublesome teens need to be engaged in meaningful activities, of inherent interest and fun. These activities are supervised and incompatible with getting into trouble. These are the first steps to changing the course of a wayward teen and improving relations with parents and family.

The real challenge in managing teens is engagement in reasonable activities. Put your efforts here.

Are Canadians Paranoid Enough?

 • Posted on January 7, 2010 at 4:27 pm

Are Canadians being watched?

I thought that this would be a fun topic to cover. I was recently on a Canadian forum and I had a conversation with several members about electronic harassment and Gang Stalking.

Some thought it was paranoid to worry about being spied upon and monitored, that’s fair, but let’s look at some of the evidence presented and you tell me if they are paranoid enough when it comes to government spying.

The privacy commissioner of Canada, Jennifer Stoddard, warned Canadians this February about Secret databases that can not be accessed by the accused.

http://www.corbettreport.com/articles/20080214_snitch_state.htm

http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2008/02/13/rcmp-privacy.html?ref=rss
Jennifer Stoddart, the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, has given her own Valentine to Canadian citizens: a 48-page report warning them that the RCMP (Canada’s national police force) is keeping thousands of files on regular citizens in secret databases which cannot be seen by the accused.

One of the many disturbing facets of Stoddart’s report are the examples she cites of information for these secret files coming from citizen informants. In one case a man was put into the secret database because a resident of his daughter’s school neighborhood saw him entering a rooming house and—believing drugs were involved—called the police. The police investigation concluded that the man had only stepped out of his car to have a cigarette, but the file was still in the national security databank seven years later.

Another incident cited in the Stoddart report involved a neighbour who saw two men carrying “something that resembled a large drum, wrapped in canvas” into their house. Police were called to investigate but found nothing resembling the reported item, yet the data was still sitting in a top secret databank five years later. As Stoddart points out in the CBC story on the report, this is potentially disastrous for the individuals named in the files, because it “could potentially affect someone trying to obtain an employment security clearance, or impede an individual’s ability to cross the border.”

What these seemingly disparate reports point to is a growing movement to turn the citizens of so-called free, democratic nations into a self-regulating secret police, saving the government the hassle of keeping tabs on everyone by delegating the duty to an unwitting public duped by a phoney war on terror.
Ok So Canadians are in secret databases that can not be accessed, not a big deal for some. Let’s see what else might be happening.

http://www.spying101.com/
If you attended a Canadian university in the past eighty years, it’s possible that, unbeknownst to you, Canadian security agents were surveying you, your fellow students, and your professors for ‘subversive’ tendencies and behaviour. Since the end of the First World War, members of the RCMP have infiltrated the campuses of Canada’s universities and colleges to spy, meet informants, gather information, and on occasion, to attend classes.
Spying in Canadian schools and on Campus.
The book, a thorough examination of RCMP surveillance of the academic world, also discusses the Mounties’ efforts to keep tabs on other elements of society, including government, the media and women’s groups.
The RCMP created security files on 800,000 Canadians, and it has long been known the force took an active interest in politicians and public
servantswith links to Communist organizations or other pursuits deemed subversive.
Wow 800,000 Canadians and counting with files opened, just for going to a Canadian University or College. That sounds reason to be a bit paranoid.
The Mounties cultivated informants among students and faculty at universities across the country and sometimes relied on the direct observations of RCMP members who were taking classes to further their education.
Fellow students cultivated as Informants who then graduate and go on into the workforce and into the rest of society? Nothing to be paranoid about there, if you care about your privacy.

http://www.cannabisculture.com/articles/2499.html
According to Redden, citizens can sometimes defeat the snitch culture. He lauds Canadians for discovering a secret government database that contained information on “virtually everyone in the country.”

The system tracked domestic and external travel, personal finances, and other intimate details on 33 million people.

When journalists revealed that the database was being used by spy agencies and the Mounties, 18,000 Canadians petitioned the health ministry to find out what the government knew about them. Eventually, the government was forced to dismantle the database ? or so they said. Government officials admitted the database was insecure, and so countless copies could easily have been made by police or nosy bureaucrats.
Wow a secret government database the contained information on nearly everyone in the country. The last time I heard about something like this, it was
East Germany. I wonder how a country the size of Canada, can have a secret government database with information on just about everyone. What intimate details did this system have, and how did it get this information?

They dismantled a database with information on everyone in the country, that they must have spent a great deal of time, effort and money to collect? Does anyone really believe this? Of course they do.
Wow this would make some people a little paranoid.

Lastly not related to spying but an interesting link. From the people who brought you Truman Show Syndrome.

I found out that there is a military link, at least one of the male patients had a former military background.

http://thelastpsychiatrist.com/2008/07/being_the_main_character_in_yo.html

Also one of the psychiatrist that is researching Truman Show Syndrome works out of McGill University in Quebec.

http://gangstalking.wordpress.com/2008/11/29/truman-show-delusion
Gold and his brother, Dr. Ian Gold, the Canada research chair in philosophy and psychiatry at McGill University in Montreal, came up with the term “Truman Show delusion.”
If you will remember the MK Ultra mind control experiments which the Canadian and U.S. government agreed to, were conducted by McGill University in Montreal, Dr Ewen Cameron’s old haunt. Ewen Cameron is the doctor that was at the heart of the MK Ultra experiments and McGill is the very University that allowed them.

Also many of complaints about Gang Stalking in Canada are coming out of Toronto and Vancouver Canada. I have seen at least one news article on this for Vancouver, but I don’t think I have seen any articles about this subject out of Toronto yet, which based on the complains is an epicenter for Gang Stalking.

This is all fun stuff to know. So should Canadians be more concerned, more paranoid, or is there really nothing to see here? Only time will tell.

Children Eat Their Fathers in Bible and Quran

 • Posted on January 7, 2010 at 4:07 pm

The Bible mentions Eat 617 times and the Quran 70 times.

Eat Rite in the Bible:

The beginning was not encouraging:

Genesis 3:17

To Adam he said, “Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will Eat of it all the days of your life.

Genesis 3:18

It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will Eat the plants of the field.

Genesis 3:19

By the sweat of your brow you will Eat your food

Because of Jacob hip, the tendon attached to the socket of the hip is banned

Genesis 32:32

Therefore to this day the Israelites do not Eat the tendon attached to the socket of the hip, because the socket of Jacob’s hip was touched near the tendon.

Benjamin is a ravenous wolf devours the prey and divides the plunder.

Genesis 49:27

“Benjamin is a ravenous wolf; in the morning he devours the prey, in the evening he divides the plunder.”

The Bible declares Racism even for food.

Exodus 12:43

No foreigner is to Eat of it.

Kill anyone who is Eats any meat of the fellowship offering belonging to the LORD.

Leviticus 7:20

But if anyone who is unclean Eats any meat of the fellowship offering belonging to the LORD, that person must be cut off from his people.

Why they are detestable?

Leviticus 11:42

You are not to Eat any creature that moves about on the ground, whether it moves on its belly or walks on all fours or on many feet; it is detestable.

Kill anyone who Eats blood.

The life of every creature is its blood

Do not Eat the blood of any creature

This verse contradicts very much with the sciences. The life of every creature is not in blood. Some creatures that we Eat are bloodless e.g. the fungus(Mushroom).

Leviticus 17:14

Because the life of every creature is its blood. That is why I have said to the Israelites, “You must not Eat the blood of any creature, because the life of every creature is its blood; anyone who Eats it must be cut off.”

Deuteronomy 12:23

But be sure you do not Eat the blood, because the blood is the life, and you must not Eat the life with the meat.

Ezekiel 33:25

Therefore say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says: Since you Eat meat with the blood still in it and look to your idols and shed blood, should you then possess the land?

Eat the flesh of your sons and your daughters

Eat the fruit of the womb, the flesh of the sons and daughters

They devour hostile nations and break their bones in pieces;

Deuteronomy 32:42

I will make my arrows drunk with blood, while my sword devours flesh: the blood of the slain and the captives, the heads of the enemy leaders.”

Psalm 27:2

When evil men advance against me to devour my flesh, when my enemies and my foes attack me, they will stumble and fall.

Psalm 53:4

Will the evildoers never learn— those who devour my people as men Eat bread and who do not call on God?

Proverbs 30:14

those whose teeth are swords and whose jaws are set with knives to devour the poor from the earth, the needy from among mankind.

Isaiah 9:20

On the right they will devour, but still be hungry; on the left they will Eat, but not be satisfied. Each will feed on the flesh of his own offspring :

Lamentations 2:20

“Look, O LORD, and consider: Whom have you ever treated like this? Should women Eat their offspring, the children they have cared for? Should priest and prophet be killed in the sanctuary of the Lord?

Ezekiel 5:10

Therefore in your midst fathers will Eat their children, and children will Eat their fathers. I will inflict punishment on you and will scatter all your survivors to the winds.

Ezekiel 39:18

You will Eat the flesh of mighty men and drink the blood of the princes of the earth as if they were rams and lambs, goats and bulls—all of them fattened animals from Bashan.

Habakkuk 3:14

With his own spear you pierced his head when his warriors stormed out to scatter us, gloating as though about to devour the wretched who were in hiding.

Galatians 5:15

If you keep on biting and devouring each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.

Revelation 19:18

so that you may Eat the flesh of kings, generals, and mighty men, of horses and their riders, and the flesh of all people, free and slave, small and great.”

Eat their own filth and drink their own urine

2 Kings 18:27

… who, like you, will have to Eat their own filth and drink their own urine?”

Isaiah 36:12

… who, like you, will have to Eat their own filth and drink their own urine?”

Is the stomach of the wicked (only) goes hungry?

Proverbs 13:25

The righteous Eat to their hearts’ content, but the stomach of the wicked goes hungry.

Do not Eat the food of a stingy man

Proverbs 23:6

Do not Eat the food of a stingy man, do not crave his delicacies;

The lion will Eat straw like the ox, but dust will be the serpent’s food

Here is another verse that contradicts with the sciences.

The lion does not Eat straw and the serpent’s food is not the dust.

Isaiah 65:25

The wolf and the lamb will feed together, and the lion will Eat straw like the ox, but dust will be the serpent’s food.

The carcasses of people are food for the birds and the beasts

Jeremiah 7:33

Then the carcasses of this people will become food for the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth, and there will be no one to frighten them away.

Jeremiah 15:3

“I will send four kinds of destroyers against them,” declares the LORD, “the sword to kill and the dogs to drag away and the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth to devour and destroy.

Jeremiah 16:4

“They will die of deadly diseases. They will not be mourned or buried but will be like refuse lying on the ground. They will perish by sword and famine, and their dead bodies will become food for the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth.”

Jeremiah 34:20

I will hand over to their enemies who seek their lives. Their dead bodies will become food for the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth.

Ezekiel 39:4

I will give you as food to all kinds of carrion birds and to the wild animals.

They Eat their food in anxiety and drink their water in despair

Ezekiel 12:19

… They will Eat their food in anxiety and drink their water in despair,

Eat fat till you are glutted and drink blood till you are drunk.

Ezekiel 39:19

At the sacrifice I am preparing for you, you will Eat fat till you are glutted and drink blood till you are drunk.

Eat the flesh of Jesus and drink his blood.

This very important theological concept is mentioned only in John.

Matthews, Mark and Luke never said that.

John 6:53

Jesus said to them, “I tell you the truth, unless you Eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.

John 6:54

Whoever Eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.

John 6:57

Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me.

John 6:58

This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your forefathers ate manna and died, but he who feeds on this bread will live forever.”

The faith of the vegetarian is weak

Romans 14:2

One man’s faith allows him to Eat everything, but another man, whose faith is weak, Eats only vegetables.

If the dead are not raised, “Let us Eat and drink”

1 Corinthians 15:32

If I fought wild beasts in Ephesus for merely human reasons, what have I gained? If the dead are not raised, “Let us Eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.”

The beast and the ten horns will hate the (naked) prostitute, Eat her flesh and burn her with fire

Revelation 17:16

The beast and the ten horns you saw will hate the prostitute. They will bring her to ruin and leave her naked; they will Eat her flesh and burn her with fire.

Eat Rite in the Quran:

The Quran teaches us to Eat in a healthy way and not to be extravagant in Eating.

Eat of what is on earth, lawful and good

Eat of the good things that We have provided for you and be grateful to Allah

Eat of the things which Allah hath provided for you, lawful and good

What the Believers will Eat in the Paradise?

What the Unbelievers will Eat in the Hell?

The Policy of Eating

The Quran teaches us to Eat in a healthy way and not to be extravagant in Eating.

Excess Eating is a very bad habit that causes many medical problems.

This meaning is not found in the Bible.

7:31

O Children of Adam! Wear your beautiful apparel at every time and place of prayer: and Eat and drink and be not extravagant; surely he does not love the extravagant

The Food we are allowed to Eat:

6:121

Eat not of (meats) on which Allah’s name hath not been pronounced: that would be impiety. But the evil ones ever inspire their friends to contend with you if ye were to obey them, ye would indeed be Pagans.

16:5

And cattle He has created for you (men): from them ye derive warmth, and numerous benefits, and of their (meat) ye Eat.

16:14

It is He Who has made the sea subject, that ye may Eat thereof flesh that is fresh and tender, and that ye may extract therefrom ornaments to wear, and thou seest the ships therein that plough the waves, that ye may seek (thus) of the bounty of Allah and that ye may be grateful.

16:114

So Eat of the sustenance which Allah has provided for you, lawful and good; and be grateful for the favours of Allah, if it is He Whom ye serve.

23:21

And in cattle (too) ye have an instructive example: from within their bodies We produce (milk) for you to drink; there are, in them, (besides), numerous (other) benefits for you; and of their (meat) ye Eat;

36:33

A Sign for them is the earth that is dead; We do give it life, and produce grain therefrom, of which ye do Eat.

2:168

O ye people! Eat of what is on earth, lawful and good; and do not follow the footsteps of the Evil One, for he is to you an avowed enemy.

2:172

O ye who believe! Eat of the good things that We have provided for you and be grateful to Allah, if it is Him ye worship.

5:88

Eat of the things which Allah hath provided for you, lawful and good; but fear Allah, in Whom ye believe.

22:28

“That they may witness the benefits (provided) for them, and celebrate the name of Allah, through the Days Appointed, over the cattle which He has provided for them (for sacrifice): then Eat ye thereof and feed the distressed ones in want.

What the Believers will Eat in the Paradise?

This meaning is not found in the Bible

43:69-73

[69] (Being) those who have believed in Our Signs and bowed (their wills to Ours) in Islam.

[70] Enter ye the Garden, ye and your wives, in (beauty and) rejoicing.

[71] To them will be passed round, dishes and goblets of gold: there will be there all that the souls could desire, all that the eyes could delight in: and ye shall abide therein (for aye).

[72] Such will be the Garden of which ye are made heirs for your (good) deeds (in life).

[73] Ye shall have therein abundance of fruit, from which ye shall have satisfaction.

52:17-19

[17] As to the Righteous, they will be in Gardens, and in Happiness,

[18] Enjoying the (Bliss) which their Lord hath bestowed on them, and their Lord shall deliver them from the Penalty of the Fire.

[19] (To them will be said:) “Eat and drink ye, with profit and health, because of your (good) deeds.”

69:22-24

[22] In a Garden on high,

[23] The Fruits whereof (will hang in bunches) low and near.

[24] “Eat ye and drink ye, with full satisfaction; because of the (good) that ye sent before you, in the days that are gone!”

What the Unbelievers will Eat in the Hell?

This meaning is not found in the Bible.

15:3

Leave them alone, to enjoy (the good things of this life) and to please themselves: let (false) Hope amuse them: soon will knowledge (undeceive them).

2:174

Those who conceal Allah’s revelations in the Book, and purchase for them a miserable profit, they swallow into themselves Naught but Fire; Allah will not address them on the Day of Resurrection, nor purify them: grievous will be their Penalty.

56:50-56

[50] “All will certainly be gathered together for the meeting appointed for a Day well-known.

[51] “Then will ye truly, O ye that go wrong, and treat (Truth) as falsehood!

[52] “Ye will surely taste of the Tree of Zaqqum.”

[53] “Then will ye fill your insides therewith,

[54] “And drink Boiling Water on top of it:

[55] “Indeed ye shall drink like diseased camels raging with thirst!”

[56] Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital!

It follows that man is one of two:

47:12

Verily Allah will admit those who believe and do righteous deeds, to Gardens beneath which rivers flow; while those who reject Allah will enjoy (this world) and Eat as cattle Eat; and the Fire will be their abode.

The Death Of John The Baptist A Sermon On Mark 6:14-29

 • Posted on January 7, 2010 at 4:07 pm

When his daughter Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests; and the king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it.” And he solemnly swore to her, “Whatever you ask me, I will give you, even half of my kingdom.” She went out and said to her mother, “What should I ask for?” She replied, “The head of John the baptizer.” (Mark 6:23-24)

We had a baptism this morning, and I think if you’d searched through the Bible for the most inappropriate Gospel story to feature today, you couldn’t have done better (or rather worse) that the one we had this morning – the story of the death of John the Baptist!

When you’re working with the lectionary, of course, it’s all the luck of he draw. We might have got Jesus saying, “let the little children come to me”, but we didn’t.  We got this story of lust and murder,  humiliation and death.

And perhaps it’s only right, if we are going to urge our newly baptised to “Fight bravely under His banner against sin, the world and the devil” that we warn them first where the fight might take them!  Or perhaps I should have just over-ridden the lectionary today and chosen a more family-friendly reading?

For it’s not just the fact that this Gospel reading focuses on the tragic death of John.  It’s all the grizzly detail that you get in the story. It’s as if we got the Hollywood, X-rated version of the story, for, I think you’ll agree that with most tragic stories you read about in the Bible, you get the ABC version.

Compare, for example, the Biblical account of Herod’s later murder of James (the brother of John) that we’re given in the book of Acts: “About that time, Herod arrested some people who belonged to the church and mistreated them. He even had James the brother of John killed with a sword.” (Acts 12:1-2) The end!  That’s it – short, succinct, tragic, but we get over it and we move on!

But not in this account of the death of the Baptist!  We get first the surly details of Herod’s personal life that give rise to the criticism he gets from John.  We get the imprisonment, the party, the dance of the young girl, and ultimately the grizzly details of how John’s head was served to the girl’s mother on a dinner-plate!

It would have been quite a scene, and it must have been quite a dance, and I did consider trying to recreate the atmosphere this morning by attempting a dance myself , but I decided that, even though I obviously do look good in a dress, my rendition of the dance of the seven army surplice blankets would never do it justice.

At any rate, the real question is ‘What is this story doing here?’ And I don’t just mean ‘what is it doing here, being read at a baptism?’, but ‘what is this passage doing in the Bible at all?’

It’s almost as if at some very early meeting of the Bible Society someone said, “we’re just not moving enough copies of this book! We need more sex and violence in here”, and so Mark piped up and said, “how about I include the death of John the Baptist?”

OK. I’m sure that wasn’t really it. Indeed, I assume that the reason this story is so drawn out is most probably for the sake of the followers of the Baptist, as John was a very popular guy, and his disciples no doubt wanted to know the details.

Even so, there’s not much that’s encouraging in this story for the followers of the Baptist. It’s not as if any of his last remaining words were recorded in this story. Indeed, we hear nothing from John in this story, as by the time he makes his personal appearance he is no longer able to speak!  And that is disappointing, as I think it would have been very helpful to know what were the last words and last thoughts of the Baptist.

We like to assume, of course, that when it comes to the death of a great man of the faith like the Baptist, that they go out full of courage and grace like Maximillian Kolbe.

Kolbe, you might remember, was the Catholic priest murdered by the Nazis who departed this earthly stage singing hymns from his starvation bunker until the guards got so sick of it that they finally finished him off with a lethal injection.

But not all martyrs die quite so gloriously.  If you read the last recorded words of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, for instance, who was also murdered by the Nazis, you’ll find someone with far more self-doubt and questioning, and I suspect that John the Baptist was something more like this.

For the only words we hear from the Baptist while he was in prison are words of doubt.  He messages Jesus from prison, you may remember, asking Him, “Are you the one we were waiting for or should we wait for another?” (Matthew 11:3)

John had been so confident early on – both about Jesus and about his own work, proclaiming Jesus as the ‘lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world’ (John 1:29) while railing as openly about Herod’s personal indiscretions as he did about everything else that ticked him off.

Perhaps John had thought himself untouchable, or perhaps he didn’t care what happened to him at that stage? But things began to look different from the inside of his prison cell, and John had doubts.

Did John die still full of doubts, or did the response he received from Jesus satisfy him, such that he died in peace?  We do not know. We know nothing of the inner life of John at the end but only of the grizzly details of his martyrdom – of the way John ticked off Herodian, Herod’s wife, of Herod’s wild party, of the seductive dance that lured the drunken king to promise up to half his kingdom to the young seductress, and of the girl’s grizzly request.

And so we come back to our original question – what is this story doing here, this story of drunken debauchery and murder?  What is it doing in the Bible?

If it’s here for the benefit of the disciples of John the Baptist, it doesn’t really have anything encouraging to offer them, and I’m sure it’s not the final chapter of the life of their master that they were expecting.

Of course we don’t know exactly what John’s followers were expecting but we do know that John was regularly compared to Elijah, and I expect the disciples of the Baptist expected his career to follow a similar course

Elijah had been the mouthpiece of God to the political leaders of his day. He challenged king Ahab and queen Jezebel and had multiple death threats made against him.  Nonetheless, God kept Elijah safe, and eventually he saw the tables turned on those who tried to imprison him and kill him.

I expect the disciples of the Baptist expected his career to follow a similar course.  And then they got the news that John’s head had been served on a dinner plate to the queen.  It must have been hard to make sense of it all.  And in truth, it really is a difficult story to make sense of, even at this distance.

You know how in our conventional Christian wisdom we say, “well, this tragedy might not make a lot of sense right now, but once we see the bigger picture, we’ll see how everything fits together.” Well … it’s 2000 years on from the death of John the Baptist and I still can’t see the point!

I find it hard to believe that, if John had died of old age something else wonderful that did happen somehow could not have happened (if you know what I mean). It is not obvious that the death of John actually accomplished anything – not then and not since – and maybe sometimes we just have to accept that tragedies happen and that they are not always miracles in disguise but just plain tragedies.

Even so, I think the Gospel writer does intend for us to see this story as part of a greater, grander, story of hope, and the key to that, I think, is actually the way in which the story is introduced.

For you may remember that our Gospel reading didn’t actually start off as being a story about John the Baptist or Herod, let alone about Herodian or Salome  It starts rather with people asking questions about Jesus – ‘who is this guy?’.  Some said Jesus was Elijah or one of the other prophets, but it’s Herod who identifies Jesus as John the Baptist having come back to haunt him, saying, “John, whom I beheaded, has been raised!” (Mark 6:16)

And Herod is completely wrong of course, but in another sense he’s entirely right.  Jesus is Jesus and not John – we need have no doubt about that – but what Herod does realise is that killing off John did not put an end to John’s work, as John’s work was just part of a larger project that Jesus was continuing!

And of course it’s not really so much the ministry of John goes on, but rather the work of the Kingdom of God that goes on!

John is dead, but the battle for the Kingdom continues.  Others before John and others after him have fallen in the battle, but still the work of God continues!  Jesus Himself will fall in this battle, but the work of God continues.  Indeed, not just despite His death, but through His death, the work of God continues.

For in the end, the work of God isn’t so much a boxing match where, when one fighter goes down, the show is over, the good guys have lost, and everybody goes home. No. It’s a relay race where, as one runner falls, he passes the baton on to the next guy in line and the race continues!

This is the battle for the Kingdom of God – a battle that is still raging and in which we are all involved!  And this is what baptism is about too – the welcoming of new soldiers into the fight – new runners into the relay.

For we recognise that as we welcome new competitors on to the field, others of us are falling from the track, and some of us are very weary and are failing. And so we give thanks for these new athletes on to the field, as we watch them begin to take up the baton and join the good fight.

It’s what my father taught me – that the work of God is like a flowing stream, and that when someone puts a rock in the stream, the water flows around the rock.  This is what the disciples of John had to discover. This is what the first century disciples of Jesus had to discover, and this is the discovery that we continue to make today – that despite the setbacks, the hardships, and despite those we lose along the way, the work of God continues, joy comes in the morning, or, in the words of Martin Luther, “The City of God remaineth”.

Many have gone before us in this battle and others will follow, and none of us is invulnerable. All of us, sooner or later, will fall, but the work of God continues.  I will fall, but the work of God will continue.  You will fall at some point but the work of God will continue!

And sometimes all we can do is pick up the remains of those who have fallen and give them a decent burial.  But we do so in the confidence that whatever happens, God will be God, God’s work will continue, love ultimately will triumph, His Kingdom will come. Amen

In the Quran: Does Allah Eat and Drink?

The Sons of the Lord God in Bible versus Quran (2)

This is the second article of the series:” The Sons of the Lord God in Bible versus Quran”.

The Bible says that the Lord God, the Almighty Creator, has SONS who were married the daughters of men.  When the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

The Quran says that Allah, the Almighty Creator, has neither a son nor a partner.  Allah is the Self-Sufficient, the eternally Besought of all; the One Who is always sought at times of need.

The Sons of the Lord God in the Bible (2)

The Bible says that the Sons of the Lord God, the Almighty Creator, were married the daughters of men.  When the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

But the Bible does not tell the names of the sons of the Lord God,

The Bible also does not give the physical attributes of the sons of the Lord God. In addition, the Bible does not tell what the number of the sons of the Lord God was and how many they were?

In short, the Bible does not let us know who, how, when, where, how many etc. in respect to the sons of the Lord God.

On the other hand, the Bible gives some informative details about the sons of the kings of Israel, for example, but does not give any details about the Sons of the Lord God, the Almighty Creator, who are of course very much more important than the sons of the kings of Judah .

On the other hand, the Quran makes it very clear and says that Allah, the Almighty Creator, has neither a son nor a partner.

Genesis 6:4

New International Version

4 The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of God went to the daughters of men and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown.

New American Standard Bible

4The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.

English Standard Version

4The Nephilim (Or giants) were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown.

King James Version

4There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

Young’s Literal Translation

4The fallen ones were in the earth in those days, and even afterwards when sons of God come in unto daughters of men, and they have borne to them — they [are] the heroes, who, from of old, [are] the men of name.

The Sons of the Lord God in the Quran (2)

The Quran firmly forbids saying that Allah has a son.

It is not befitting for the Majesty of Allah to take to Himself a son.

In Islam, this point is very important faith wise.

In a very simple word, Allah, the Almighty Creator, has neither a son nor a partner.

Again, it is unforgivable sin to say or to believe that The One Almighty Creator who is Allah or God or the Lord or Jehovah or whatever you name Him has a son or sons.

A group of the disbelievers and the idolaters’ people of Mecca went to the Prophet Muhammad, and said to him:

Describe to us your Lord,

What is the lineage of your Lord?

what is He made of?

And to which species does He belong?

Is He made of gold, copper or silver?

Does He eat and drink?

Who did He inherit this world from?

And to whom will He bequeath it?’

and so Allah, exalted is He, revealed this Surah (Chapter 112) to describe His attributes and traits, saying:

Say (O Muhammad): He is Allah, the One!

He has no son or partner.

Allah is the Self-Sufficient, the eternally Besought of all; the One Who is always sought at times of need,

He begets not, nor is he begotten, for anyone who is begotten will certainly die and whoever dies will be inherited. Allah does not die nor is He inherited.

And there is none comparable unto Him.

He does not have anyone who resembles Him or is like Him

Naught is as His likeness

From the Islamic point of view, the conclusion of this essential topic that may establish or destroy the faith is that:

Any one who believe that the Almighty Creator has a son or sons; he messes his faith up and is considered as a disbeliever and in the afterlife he will end up as an eternal inhabitant of the hell.

Any one who believe that the Creator has neither a son nor a partner; he has a good faith and is considered as a believer and in the afterlife he will end up as an eternal inhabitant of the paradise.

The meanings of Surah (Chapter) 112 of the Noble Quran:

Say: He is Allah, the one; He is the Master whose glory is at its peak and for Whom all created beings are in need;

It is also said that means: He Who does not eat or drink;

It is also said that this means: He Who does not have an interior;

It is also said that this means: He is the Everlasting; He is the Sufficient;

It is also said that this means: He who does not have an entrance or exit.

He begets not, nor is he begotten

He neither begot, for no likeness of Him can exist, nor was begotten, since createdness is precluded in His case.

He did not inherit and will not be inherited;

And it is also said this means: He does not have a son who will inherit His dominion and He was not begotten, which means that He did not inherit His dominion.

Nor is there anyone equal to Him’, neither match nor comparison

there is none comparable unto Him

He does not have an opposite, peer, or equal nor anyone who may resemble or begin to resemble Him;

and it is also said this means: He does not have any co-equal who would compete with Him about dominion and sovereignty’.
