There’s No Mountain Too High

  • Posted on January 18, 2010 at 10:07 pm

I drank for twenty years alcoholically. During the last seven years of that time, I “sped my bottom” by adding prescription drugs, mostly diet pills and Valium, but some street drugs too. I had a Mount Everest of problems. The last year of my drinking, my husband left me, I landed in jail twice on drunk and disorderly charges, and I attempted suicide several times.

My final straw came on the Memorial Day Weekend of 1979. As I lay in my bedroom after I had once again tried to kill myself, my twelve year old daughter, Kimmy, held up my wrists and said to me, “Momma, I’m just a kid. I can’t handle this any more. Please help me!” She then fell into my arms sobbing. Her cry was of tears of innocence lost.

I said, “I’m going to quit drinking. I know I can. Please believe me, baby.”

She said, “I can’t, Momma. You’ve promised so many times before. I just can’t believe you. I think we’ll have to learn to live with your drinking.” My pajamas were wet with her tears.

Three miracles occurred in the next couple of days. After Kimmy went to get dressed I cried out to a God I didn’t believe in, that unknown, absent God of anger and vengeance, I thought, “Oh God, even though you aren’t, if I could ask I would plead for you to show me a way to quit drinking.”

Then I got out of bed to get my bottle of vodka and make a drink of mostly vodka and a cube or two of ice. I remembered buying a half gallon the night before. I began my search, no, not in the linen cabinet, not on the tea cart, not behind the towels under the bathroom sink, not in any kitchen cabinet, not behind the lawn mower in the garage, not in the fridge, not in any of the bushes, which I noticed needed trimming, not under my bed or the guest bed, not in the bookshelves, not in the basement behind the furnace, not in the basement shower or bedroom closet, not anywhere.

I stormed into my daughter’s room, “Where did you hide the bottle?”

She was puzzled and still in after-sobs, “Mom, you know I just got home from spending the night with Cheri, and I came straight to the bedroom. I never throw away the liquor. I know you need it too badly. I always bring you a drink not take one away.” The first miracle, the alcohol was gone from the house.

As I left my daughter’s room I began to think about my physical condition. I suddenly became aware that I didn’t have a hangover. I actually felt pretty good, not perfect, a little weak and shaky. But I wasn’t nauseated, and I didn’t have a headache. Second miracle.

I sat down and made a very indecisive decision, if that’s possible. Maybe I’d try to quit drinking. But how? Deep inside I knew I couldn’t do it by myself. A thought occurred to me. Several months before my mother had talked with a friend who was in AA. The friend had given her a card. Mother had given me the card. I had stuck it in my purse planning to get rid of it in the circular file at the first possible opportunity, offended by my mother’s thinking I had a drinking problem. I sat down and began to go through my purse, yes, gum wrappers housing chewed gum, enough change to support me for a year, a sock of Kimmy’s, a ten year old library card, and, behold and lo, the card of my mother’s friend. Then I took a Valium and sat for several more minutes. Finally, I dialed. She answered right away. I told her I wasn’t sure I had a problem with alcohol. She told me her story which had involved quitting and going to AA once and then going back on the booze by ordering cases of Scope from the drugstore. She told me about a meeting in my area. Maybe I would just check it out. Third miracle.

The next Thursday I went to that meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous, and by the grace of God and the fellowship of AA I have not had a drink since. Now it has been over twenty-three years. Is this the fourth miracle? Or is life with God just an ongoing, continuous miracle even in the face of deep hardship and pain, maybe especially when great overcoming is needed.

Of all the robes God wears I think restoration of friendships and relationships is one of His favorites. Once I started in AA Charles came back. Still we came very close to divorce in my sobriety. I was going to leave if he did not make changes. At that point he told me I’d have to make changes too. I said, “I don’t need to make any changes. I’m not drinking or drugging. That’s my amend.”

Charles informed me he was sick and tired of my dragging up the past every time we had a fight and then blaming him for everything. I finally agreed to try to stop the personal history lesson every time we fought. I do believe God showed me through inventory that I did manipulate through my anger, that I tried to gain more power by always making Charles to blame for everything, that I portrayed myself as a saint who spent everyday tolerating this cruel and vicious human being.

Now Charles and I have been married for 37 years. God has truly blessed our marriage and transformed our hearts and given us His heart of love for each other. We have a lot of fun together, movies, dinners, traveling, biking, swimming and romance, a special blessing from God.

My daughter, who now lives in California, is my best friend, and we burn up the telephone wires talking each other’s ears off. I am glad to tell you God has not deserted California despite rumors, fears and recommendations to the contrary. My daughter is a very Godly woman. I have two wonderful grandkids, and we visit them as often as we can.

I have a successful business and am starting a new one with a friend. So life is full, and God is good. I have learned over the years that this does not mean I will not have pain. I always got the message backwards. I would say, “Once I’ve cleaned up my act, then I’ll look into the God thing.” It’s really the other way around. “First, you go to God, and then you heal.”

Is Falsehood The Word For Natural Hair Care Products?

  • Posted on January 18, 2010 at 9:20 pm

It may be very difficult to find the right natural hair care products to suit your needs. This problem arises mostly with those people who, most of the times work with hair textures of different sorts over a long period of time. Very often do they get frustrated as they do not find the right hare care products that are made naturally and also those that work successfully for the body. Natural hair care products somehow seem to only cater to the needs of those who have dry hair. This also may include curly, natural, wavy hair, straight hair, locked hair and also color treated hair.

For hair that is black use a shampoo that has good moisture content and then go in for a conditioner that can help replenish the nutrients. Your hair will look black when the conditioner that you use is revitalizing. Condition your hair well to make your hair manageable and also free from tangles. Sleek look can be obtained by you by just making use of the hair serum that is nourishing. Yet another option is to renew your scalp. For fine hair do use nourishing shine products.

Scalp renewal is the word for African hair that is curly. For hair that needs to be taken care of everyday use moisturizer as well as a shampoo that is nourishing. When you use this make sure that you are using a conditioner that replenishes the nutrients. Holding the curls in the right place may be very simple if you so use the natural sprays. Along with the revitalizer use a leave in conditioner when you have to be outdoors. Curls that are bouncy have to be locked and twisted.

Sleek and straight are the traits of American hair. The products that are used for daily hair care contain nourishing shampoo that is rich in moisture and also a conditioner for replenishing the nutrients. This stays the same for this hair type. You can wrap and roll natural hair if the shampooing if followed by air drying. Spray gels can be opted for if you do use flat irons. For textured hair that is fine use hair nourishing cream. Nourishing serum for the hair can also be applied to keep the nutrients in the hair.

Scalp renewal may be very necessary if you want natural hair growth. This may be the first thing that you should think of. You can enhance the growth by using natural nourishing creams and serums that are also natural. Nevertheless use good conditioners and also shampoo your hair with moisturized shampoos. This is good for daily hair care.

Moisture rich shampoos and conditioners can be used by men to keep their hair in good condition. Condition and sculpts are used often. Hair growth for men is enhanced by hair nourishing creams.

Special hair care treatment needs to be given for extremely fizzy hair. You can reduce frizz by leaving in the conditioner. This has to be done after shampoo and also be followed by a conditioner. You can soften the strands of the hair by making use for shining and nourishing products. Smooth and silky hair can be got by reducing frizz. This is done by the serums and the hair nourishing creams.

For colored hair more care needs to be taken. Nourishing creams that are naturally got are used. Shining products help in keeping the color longer and also in keeping them brighter.

INTERVIEW OF A WRITER

  • Posted on January 18, 2010 at 6:07 pm

INTERVIEW OF A WRITER

(The interview board of an advertising agency consisting of chairman and three members, awaits the entry of the next candidate. The interview is being held to select writers who will compose slogans, ads, technical write-ups etc. for products of client companies. Candidate Van Chan Travolta enters. He is a short, stout ,shining bald person)

Chairman (Smiling): “Welcome Mr. Three in One. I beg your pardon for deforming your name. Please don’t take it otherwise.”

(As VCT enters , he stoops and his right shoe hits the bolt of the automatic door and he loses his balance .Colliding with an adjacent almirah , he kneels on the ground and a heavy office file falls from atop  the almirah  on his shining bald head. Along with it , the file brings down an ink bottle which uncaps and ink splashes out of it , colouring VCT’s head. VCT manages to rise on his feet somehow and moves forward with determined steps as ink trickles down his arid top. He is clad in a red  ragged bush shirt and torn jeans and an unequally trimmed moustache on the  two sides of his wide nostrils provides a rare asymmetrical ugliness to his countenance.)

Chairman: “Going by the decorum of an interview Mr. VCT, didn’t you think it necessary to wear decent clothes?”

VCT: “Sorry Sir, but I believe intellectual people are like that only. My great grandfather , a contemporary of William Wordsworth ,  used to wear a torn coat , my grandfather , a friend of Edgar Allan Poe , always wore a severely mutilated pair of trousers , my father wears a cap with a hole…….”

Member1: “OK…Ok… hold on please. We understand that you have quite a patchy pedigree , frayed forefathers , a damaged descent and a tattered trend apart from intellectual inheritance.”

Chairman (interrupting): “Now let’s start with your name. It reminds me of Jon Bon Jovi , a star of the yester years. Your name also carries the same rhythmicity. How on earth did your parents stumble upon such a name?”

VCT:  “Well, first the rhythm thing.  My forefathers were all rhythmic people. They lived in a poetic milieu. They hated to stagnate and loved flowing freely. So it was naturality and spontaneity, motion and  emotion all along. Next, the Hollywood touch . My father had a great longing to write a script for stars like  John Travolta , Van Damme  and Jackie Chan. In fact he wrote a script named “Boozed Beggars” for them but the same was turned down by each of them. He chased them to every spot they went to shoot but alas! he never could fulfill his cherished dream. And thereafter he decided to pass on the legacy of chasing to me. Hence my  rhythmic , ambitious , freely flowing , Hollywood  name.”

Chairman: “Did you try writing a script for the stars contributing your name?”

VCT:” I wrote one for Jackie Chan ,”Snake in the Donkey’s Shadow” and Chan tried hard to do the acrobatics as per the demand of the script but he couldn’t and ultimately gave up. He requested me to come up with an easier script…..and ‘am grinding one….”

Member2: “Interesting .Quite interesting Mr. VCT. Having heard about your awesome ancestry the board now, is interested in knowing about some of your compositions. How experienced are you in the field of writing? Tell us what have you been writing recently?”

VCT: “Oh !  Yes Sir , Part of my style of entry was intentional , the purpose thereof was to conspicuously represent my arid top , because you must be knowing that the comb of experience is acquired only when one goes bald. My experience lies mainly in the field of educative articles. Few of my recently composed articles are “FIVE TIPS TO WEAR YOUR SPECTACLES”, “TOP THREE TIPS TO SIT ON A CHAIR”, “THREE TIPS TO DRINK A GLASS OF WATER …”

Member 3(interrupting): “How about FIVE TIPS TO DO NOTHING” ?

VCT: “Oh! great idea your majesty!”

Member 1: “Do you write poems , stories etc.?”

VCT: “O ! ya! Recently I wrote a story with  my one eyed daughter as the central character . What inspired me to write about her is her strange behaviour . The dents on my head are witness to that. If  I don’t accept any of her demands she might use any of her toys to print these dents on my head.”

Member1: “Toys ? I guess you wrote a kids’ story. Something like ‘Harry Potter’ ?”

VCT: “Scary Daughter.”

Chairman: “O, I see. It’s good that dents are a family matter in your case. Many writers get them as a gift from their audience. Anyway, let’s talk business now. See there?”

(Chairman points to an advertisement hung on the wall. It is about a suiting –shirting outlet. It reads “THE ULTIMATE  FITTINGS OF YOUR LIFE. YOU NEVER THINK OF GETTING OUT OF THEM”.)

Chairman: “This is an award winning slogan from our company. If you are selected you will have to write such slogans. O.K. with you?”

VCT: “fine sir.”

Chairman: “We have been asked to provide a slogan for a new brand of mattresses . Can you suggest?”

VCT: “Sure. THE ULTIMATE SLEEP OF YOUR LIFE. NEVER EVER YOU GET UP”

Chairman (Bursting in laughter): “Are you sure  this slogan will sell mattresses for the brand?”

VCT: “Of course sir . People will die on such mattresses … er…I mean .. for such mattresses.”

Member 2: “O.K. Will you like to mention any awards , laurels you won?”

VCT: “Yes! I was recently awarded the ‘FULL BOTTLE’ award for my path breaking novel ‘DRUNK DONKEYS’.”

Chairman: “And which organization did award you that?”

VCT: “BOTTOMS UP CLUB.”

Member2: “How different the earth would have been Mr. VCT, had you not been born?”

Chairman (Whispering in member2’s ears and having a suppressed laugh): “The earth would have been a little lighter, The day would have lasted a little longer and night would have been shorter, it would have rained heavily in the Sahara , the great poets wouldn’t have died…)”

VCT (Overhearing chairman’s voice): “The great poet era has begun again sir and you are interviewing the harbinger.”

Chairman: “Well Mr.VCT, we had a nice time interviewing you. We all wish you best of luck for your future endeavours. “

VCT: “Should I consider it as the end of my present endeavour?”

Chairman and all the members : “Ya, that’s it.”

(VCT turns a full circle and slowly departs. He pushes the door outwards and looks back a final time to bid good bye and  bows for courtesy sake. Just then his pen drops from his pocket and as he bends down to pick it , the automatic door bounces back and hits VCT hard on his head. He falls flat with a bang on the ground. Chairman and members rush to give a helping hand.)

Should I allow my 12 daughter to see alcoholic dad?

  • Posted on January 18, 2010 at 6:07 pm

Been divorced since she was two. He’s always been inconsistant, neglectful and drunk. When she was 11, and visiting dad, he allows her to wear inappropriate clothes, hang on drunk men, no supervision and no boundries. Most recently her dad and 9 others tricked me into driving to his house to pick up our daughter. They all pulled me from my car brutally assaulted me (so badly, I had to be hospitalized). Daughter is angry because I got a restraining order and still wants to see her dad (who is telling her hateful lies about me). I’ve just had to put my daughter into a mental hospital for severe depression and self mutalation (cutting). She wishes she could see him. Am I doing the right thing protecting her from the unacceptable lifestyle he chooses or is it personal and my PTSD just can’t face any of those people & my ex?

Dating After Divorce…two Words for Ya

  • Posted on January 18, 2010 at 4:07 pm

What’s worse than being a 30 something year old woman out in the dating world trying to find her perfect soul mate?  Being a 30 something year old woman out in the dating world trying to find her second perfect soul mate who doesn’t mind that she’s divorced, unemployed, and has two young kids that he’ll have to pretend to find charming and delightful. What could be worse than that?  Oh, I’ve got something worse than that…

Let’s start with the dating scene.  I’ve been out of it for a good twelve years, so when my single friends complained about the state of dating and relationships I just thought they needed to quit whining and make some more effort.  And maybe lose 5 lbs. And do something with that God-awful haircut they’ve had for the last 15 years. But I digress.  Smug in my perfect marriage, with my perfect husband and my perfect children, I was conceited enough to look down upon the lonely masses and breathe a sigh of relief that I was not one of them.  And then it happened.

The D word.  Divorce. My perfect husband came crashing down, ripping my perfect marriage down with him like some bad soap opera actor tearing down the lush silk dining room curtains in a drunken rage.  But this was no soap opera (I wish it was because then I could have shot him, suffered from amnesia, ran off to a deserted island, been pronounced dead in a shipwreck, and miraculously come back with a nice tight face lift and perky boobs…but I digress again!)

So what’s a girl to do?  More importantly what’s a divorced girl with two kids under ten to do?  Two words for ya…ONLINE DATING.

Now, I know, I know, you’ve all heard the horror stories about online dating:  the men have combovers, are ugly, and sex freaks, the women are desperate, fifty pounds overweight with names like Shirley Ann who post pictures from ten years ago (in case there are any Shirley Ann’s in the audience, I think that is a perfectly classy and beautiful name).  Well I am here to tell you these horror stories are wrong, WRONG I tell you!  I met a wonderful, sexy, man from France who took me to expensive restaurants, appreciated fine wine, and could speak articulately about literature, world events, and global warming and the affect it’s having on innocent bunny rabbits.  Then he dumped me and I quickly found out that those horror stories are all TRUE, every last one of them!

So as not to send you screaming into the night, I’ll give a brief synopsis of what I’ve encountered in one (yes, just ONE) month of online dating.  The first date after my heart was smashed by Frenchie was a tall cute Indian guy who is an engineer.  So far so good.  We got drinks, talked about business, and world events, nice guy.  He could be the one.  Second date:  Walk along the beach and more great conversation.  About him.  And his job.  And how much money he made. And how he had enough money in his portfolio to retire today at 36.  Yeah, I thought all this was great and wonderful, but why didn’t he take me to lunch.  Nothing fancy, just a burger, a nice salad.  Know what I got?  A cup of coffee.  A freakin’ six hour date and all I got was a cup of coffee!  Oh, we did stop at McDonalds, but that was to get another cup of coffee…for him.  6 sugars, 6 creams.  No lie.  Now I love lots of sugar and cream but c’mon be a man!

Second date:  Neurotic 51 year old Jewish ex-stockbroker.  Great body, but kept talking about his ex wife’s shoe collection.  Third date:  Divorced, 38 year old lawyer.  He kept talking about his ex-wife’s new boyfriend and how he wasn’t jealous.  Fourth date:  married swinger, another lawyer.  No comment necessary.  Fifth date: 48 (defiantly lying about his age) entrepreneur who couldn’t keep his hands off of me 30 minutes into our date and kept telling me how black chicks were hot.  (He was a white South Afrikan, must have been some residual apartheid guilt).  The dating blitz continues… (my heart was broken, cut me some slack)! Sixth date: a hot, hot, hot 24 year old.  Unfortunately he was also dumb, dumb, dumb, wanted me to meet his mom, plan our wedding and adopt my kids all by next week.  What kind of 24 year old is this?  Rounding out my dating rodeo was a bi-sexual artist, a beefed up real estate broker who kept bragging about some land he bought behind Paris Hilton’s house, and a city commissioner who had his  six year old daughter call me the day after our first date to ask if I could be her new mommy.  Needless to say, she didn’t get a call back!

So, what is a divorced girl with two kids under the age of ten to do?  Two words for ya…STAY HOME!

But seriously, fellow divorcees, I know it’s tough advice but please don’t go through what I went through.  Stay home, work on you, love you, treat you right, and that special someone will come along to sweep you off your feet.  Sweep yourself off your own feet first by realizing how awesome you are…and don’t date married swingers!

visit www.kimhess.com to get more tips on gaining your sanity  back (if you ever had any!) in this crazy, crazy world.

Improving Your Heart Health, One Step at a Time

  • Posted on January 18, 2010 at 2:20 pm

Without a healthy heart, every day is nerve racking. You worry each time you feel the slightest discomfort that today is the day your heart will give out. Instead of worrying your days away, take positive steps to improve your odds.

The first thing you can do to improve your heart health is to stop smoking. Any treatment for heart disease will be undone by the damage to your health caused by cigarettes. Smoking increases the risk of coronary heart disease by increasing your blood pressure and your blood’s ability to clot.

Smoking also prevents you from participating in physical activity, further adding to your chances for heart disease. In America, smoking accounts for nearly 444,000 of the country’s annual 2.4 million deaths, according to the American Heart Association.

Other risk factors for heart disease include diabetes, high blood cholesterol, obesity and genetic predisposition. You can’t control your genetic makeup, but you most certainly can have a positive effect on your weight. A reduction in your overall weight will significantly improve your heart health and potentially keep you from having to suffer through surgery, hospitalization and treatment for heart disease.

Instead of being dependent on blood pressure pills and cholesterol medication for the rest of your life, try to use foresight in your daily routine. If you don’t want to die of a heart attack before your daughter gets married or your grandchild is born, you’re going to have to drastically change your lifestyle.

This may sound overwhelming at first. After years of eating cheeseburgers, you can’t imagine being the guy that orders a salad at lunch. Well, every great accomplishment starts with a first step. Try simple steps to improve your heart health. Replace one bad habit a week with one good habit.

Instead of having potato chips for a snack while you’re watching television at night, cut up two small bananas and a cup of strawberries into slices. Enjoy the flavor of these fruits and their heart health benefits. Potassium has been proven to lower your risk of heart disease, and these foods are cholesterol free.

The following week, step out and replace another bad habit with a healthy one. Instead of watching a little bit of television after dinner, get out and walk around the block. Start off simple. The fresh air and the sunshine will lift your spirits, and the simple act of walking improves your heart health.

Then, step up your routine a single notch. If on Monday you walked around the block once, aim to go for an extra block on Wednesday. Before you know it, you’ll be looking forward to your walks and going a distance you never imagined possible. Exercise doesn’t have to mean killing yourself on a treadmill or lifting heavy weights at the gym. It simply means you need to increase your activity level a little bit at a time to improve your overall heart health.

The only person that can improve your current and future health is you. Your heart isn’t invincible. Years of punishing it with cigarettes, high cholesterol foods, a lack of exercise and other risky behaviors will eventually catch up with you. Don’t wait until it’s too late. Get out, get active, change your habits and get a new lease on life with a brand new set of heart healthy habits.

Victorian London – Orphans, Prostitutes and the Poor in Queen Victoria’s London

  • Posted on January 18, 2010 at 8:06 am

The Victorian Pub – The Modern Plague of London

The Victorians drank for many reasons other than just to be sociable. Water was unsafe and  ale was used as a thirst quencher. It was believed intoxicants imparted physical stamina and energy – also, its initial effect was that fatigue was temporarily dulled. Alcohol was used as a pain killer,in treatments by dentists and surgeons and as pain relief during childbirth. Excessive drinking was common and there were pubs to suit every taste: the inns with accommodation for travellers, were the most respectable – at the other end of the scale were the gin shops which served the very poor. Pubs were the only place many people could enjoy comforts not available in their own homes – newspapers, light and warmth and a chance to socialise with company.

Health -  Dirt and Disease

Until the bacteriological causes of disease were understood in the late 19th century the connection between dirt and disease wasn’t understood. Overcrowded conditions, limited access to light and air, streets littered with refuge with cesspools being the normal sanitary arrangements, made sure Typhus and other diseases abounded amongst the poorest of London society. Around 1842, the average age of a man living in Whitechapel, London, was 45 for a professional man, 27 for a tradesmen and 22 for a labourer. Wealthy people were less affected by diseases such as typhus – associated with insanitary  housing – but the waterborne disease of cholera, spared no class. The River Thames was used as a main sewer but only when politicians were driven from the Houses of Parliament by the stench from the river in hot weather, was anything done to improve drainage.

London Markets in Victorian Times

Most of the commodity markets were built or rebuilt during Victorian times. Before the coming of the railways, Covent Garden wholesale market had to have its supplies delivered by barrow and cart through narrow streets and alleys, while, live animals were driven by often-drunken drovers, through respectable London streets on their way to Smithfield meat market. During the Mid-Victorian era, London had numerous daily street markets such as Leather Lane off Holborn and the Cut at Lambeth and areas where large numbers of poor people lived. The retail markets, such as Petticoat Lane and Berwick Market were essential to the working class who could not afford shop prices.

Victorian Children

In well-off families, daughters were taught at home by their mothers, governesses or in small private schools – while orphan and pauper children in 1833 were quite often enduring a working day of 14 hours, even at six years old. A big advance came in 1873 when the employment of children was only allowed if it could be shown the child had a record of school attendance but the abuse of boy chimney sweeps continued in spite of the law. Victorian families were large, with five or more children the norm until the late 1800′s.

The Victorian Woman

Pre- marital chastity was very important in Queen Victoria’s England, even though females from working class families were hardly innocent about sexual matters because of the cramped conditions they lived in. Even among the upper classes an ideal of the perfect lady, was somebody without any sexual desires – just strong feelings for family and a desire for motherhood. Sexuality represented the animal side of human nature and the Victorians believed that family relationships would not last when people put their own pleasures before duty. Prostitutes and adulteresses were disliked and feared because of the passions they aroused. Prostitution may have seemed the only option for many single women faced with a life of poverty.

The End of Victoria’s Reign

In the last part of Victoria’s reign, thousands of row houses were built for artisans- many were plain and cramped but at least they had water, drainage and gas. The working week was cut by a fifth and workers had more time for leisure but for poorest members of society in London, the Victorian era was time of great hardship and misery.

My Child is Autistic—Where Do I go From Here?

By Carmel L. Mooney

Perhaps no day in a parent’s life is more traumatic and chaotic than the day they first realize or are informed that their child has an Autism Spectrum Disorder.

For my daughter, it was evident to me what was wrong, immediately following her profound vaccine injury. I had no time to grieve or process my feelings when I got the confirmation from medical professionals of what I had feared most. For me it was no real shock to see the diagnosis on paper. I had already witnessed my beautiful, happy, intelligent, affectionate, singing and smiling toddler quickly fall into a dark abyss of anger, frustration, and isolation. I knew what was wrong. But still I was faced with the daunting task of navigating a complex system of professionals and procedures to get the diagnosis I knew she needed in order to best facilitate the care she would require.

What followed were months of sleepless nights of research, phone calls to the best doctors the country had to offer, and long stressful airplane flights around the nation on a quest for solutions. For most parents this period of overwhelming information and searching for answers comes during severe emotional stress, exhaustion, and sleep deprivation. Often well-meaning family, friends and even health professionals are at a loss as to how to support or educate the family in crisis as they wade through reams of information and misinformation trying to find viable options, resources and hope.

Here are some starting points to consider as you will likely be juggling several balls at once as you explore services and therapies for your child, which may include Speech therapy, Occupational therapy, auditory processing therapies, ABA therapy, and more.

Statistically the children with the best outcomes have been treated with the DAN! protocol and DAN! physicians. You will find a list of practicing DAN! physicians and stories of hundreds of children no longer on the spectrum because of successful bio-medical interventions and treatment at www.generationrescue.org.

DAN! (Defeat Autism Now!) is an organization founded by the Autism Research Institute. It is of critical importance to note that DAN! physicians are classically trained medical doctors who apply their training to treat autism spectrum disorders bio-medically using the latest DAN! protocol. Keep in mind that while the number of these doctors is rapidly growing each year it may take three to six months or more to obtain an appointment with some DAN! physicians.

Here is an affordable and do-able action plan to implement while waiting to see a DAN! doctor and for therapies to start:

Reduce the toxic load from your home environment. Most autistic children are wrestling with various toxicity issues and are predisposed to magnified ill-effects from environmental toxins, so lower your load at home first. Opt for organic and chemical-free cleansers, fibers, bedding, clothing, and products whenever possible throughout your home.

Invest in a balanced multivitamin and mineral supplement. Several companies manufacture specific supplements for children with ASD. Some of the better-known supplements used by DAN! doctors are from Kirkman Labs. They are available without prescriptions.

Consider adding cod liver oil to your child’s food or juice. Cod Liver Oil is an excellent source of Vitamin A. Often parents of autistic children find immediate improvements in eye contact and calmness from simply implementing Cod Liver Oil to their child’s diet. Nordic Naturals Orange Flavored Cod Liver Oil is a brand often recommended by doctors for its purity standards.

Begin using probiotics. Probiotics provide the stomach with “good” gut flora. One well-know probiotic is Acidophilus, another yet is Bifidum. Most ASD children benefit from daily supplementation with probiotics, particularly the ones with leaky gut or yeast issues.

Lipoceutical Glutathione. Glutathione is one of the body’s most potent and vital anti-oxidants. The majority of children with ASD are critically low in Glutathione. Most DAN! Doctors use this as one component of the DAN! Protocol. It is often dispensed in a transdermal cream or as a liquid in a bottle that is well absorbed by the body. You can purchase Lipoceutical Glutathione over-the-counter from Wellness Pharmacy: 1-800-227-2627. A large percentage of parents report immediate improvement after introducing Lipoceutical Glutathione.

Find a local physician who is familiar with the Defeat Autism Now! Protocol, and plan out a series of medical tests and treatments.  Some physicians will be open to medical testing and biomedical treatments, but others will not. Search until you find one who is willing to help your child, as opposed to one who wishes only to monitor the severity of your child’s problems. Take your child to a physician who supports you and respects your viewpoint, goals, and objectives.

Attend one or more parent support groups.  Parents and caregivers can be a valuable source of support and information.  There are over 200 chapters of the Autism Society of America, over 70 chapters of FEAT, and other informal parent support groups. Consider joining or visiting at least one.

It is important to note that every child is treated differently by a DAN! physician based on that child’s individual medical needs. As Dr. Raj Patel, MD, a DAN! doctor from California states, “Each DAN! practitioner has a slightly different approach. We are working with a syndrome, not a single disease. Five different kids with one label may have different problems underneath.”

The key is to get plugged into a DAN! doctor as quickly as possible so that they can guide you though the treatment plan your individual child requires.

There is something you can do as a newly diagnosed parent of a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Research, arm your self with the latest knowledge, and take action.
