What is Breast Cancer and Causes of Breast Cancer

Definition of breast cancer: Cancer that forms in tissues of the breast, usually the ducts (tubes that carry milk to the nipple) and lobules (glands that make milk). It occurs in both men and women, although male breast cancer is rare.


Symptoms of Breast Cancer


Knowing the signs and symptoms of breast cancer may help save your life. When the disease is discovered early, you have more treatment options and a better chance for a cure.


A lump or thickening in the breast or armpit


A change in the size or shape of the breast


Discharge from the nipple


A change in the color or texture of the skin of the breast or areola (such as dimpling, puckering, or scaliness).


Breast discharge is a common problem and is rarely a symptom of cancer. Discharge is most concerning if it is from only one breast or if it is bloody. In any case, all breast discharge should be evaluated.


A change in the shape of your nipple, particularly if it turns in, sinks into the breast or becomes irregular in shape


A blood-stained discharge from the nipple


A rash on a nipple or surrounding area


A swelling or lump in your armpit


Causes of Breast Cancer


Age: The chance of getting breast cancer goes up as a woman gets older. Most cases of breast cancer occur in women over 60.


Personal history of breast cancer: A woman who had breast cancer in one breast has an increased risk of getting cancer in her other breast.


Your risk of developing breast cancer increases as you get older. About 1 out of 8 invasive breast cancer diagnoses are among women younger than 45, while about 2 out of 3 women with invasive breast cancer are age 55 or older when they are diagnosed.


Recently published research shows that a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer is also affected by breast density and whether she has used hormone therapy; including these additional risk factors in a breast cancer risk assessment tool might increase its accuracy, but researchers still need to validate these additional factors with data from independent studies


Family history: If a woman’s blood-related relatives on either her mother or father’s side of the family have had breast cancer, then she is at increased risk for the disease. Having a first-degree relative (mother, sister, daughter) with breast cancer can double a woman’s risk.


Breast Cancer Treatments


Surgery


The goals of breast cancer surgery are to remove the cancerous tissue, and to analyze it for type, grade, size, hormonal status, and possible metastasis.


Frozen sections. Mayo Clinic has the benefit of its unique frozen section pathology lab, which allows for rapid and accurate microscopic analysis of tissue while a patient is still in the operating room. This capability allows doctors to know whether they have removed all of the cancer (achieved negative margins) within minutes of removing the tissue. Without frozen section analysis, determining whether all of the cancer has been removed may take days, causing a patient to undergo multiple surgeries.


Breast Reconstruction


Many women choose to have a plastic surgeon reconstruct their breast, either at the time of mastectomy or afterward. The surgeon may use saline-filled implants and/or tissue from other parts of the body to rebuild a natural looking breast and nipple. Reconstruction should be discussed with a plastic surgeon before you have your mastectomy. California law requires that insurers cover the costs of breast reconstruction.

A Review of a Room at the Top by John Braine

It’s fifty years since A Room At The Top first appeared. Against a backdrop of post-war Britain, a period when people really did believe that a new future, a different kind of society was just around the corner, Joe Lampton, born January 1921, aspired to social and economic elevation. Though competent and already promoted, as a local government officer in a grubby northern English town, with spare time interests in amateur dramatics, cigarettes and beer, even he himself rated his prospects of success as very poor.

But Joe’s other passion was the ladies. Two in particular caught his eye. Alice Aisgarth was married, older than him, and had a local reputation for being a bit “forward”. Basically she wanted love and passion to light up her dull, unhappy life with excitement. Susan Brown was a different prospect entirely, being nineteen, virginal and daughter of a rich businessman. If Joe Lampton could never work his way to wealth, he might just be able to marry it. His problems arose out of Susan’s desire to remain pure during their courtship, a position that meant Joe had to continue seeing Alice to satisfy his needs. Further complications arose when Susan relented and fell immediately pregnant.

Well Joe achieved his goal. He and Susan married and he attained what he had sought all along, a meal ticket for life. He was not entirely without conscience, however. So when the rejected Alice, who deeply loved him, is killed in a car crash after a drunken night trying to drown her sorrows, Joe Lampton does suffer some remorse. But eventually, like many social climbers, he achieves his heights by trampling on others.

What remains enduringly intriguing about Room At The Top is its portrayal of British society’s obsession with social class. Joe perceives his best chance of social elevation is to marry money. And, in 2007, I re-read this novel in a week when a United Kingdom report declared that current day social class differences were widening, whilst opportunities for social mobility are actually decreasing. So John Braine’s novel is also a social document. The book is very much of its own time. It reminds us, for instance, that in the 1950s everyone smoked – and smoked a lot. Men drank pints in the pub – some of which did not even admit women. Homosexuality was not only not tolerated, it was illegal, though remained visible. Some of the recorded individual aspiration now seems nothing less than quaint. Alice Aisgarth, for instance, declares that she would like to sleep with Joe. “Truly sleep,” she qualifies, “in a big bed with a feather mattress and brass rails and a porcelain chamber pot underneath it.” In the 1950s, most north of England houses did not have bathrooms and the potties were usually enamel.

But it is in the area of social class that A Room At The Top is bitingly and enduringly apt. Joe Lampton believes he lacks the capacity to succeed, lacks the necessary background, the poise, the breeding. He sees himself as essentially vulgar and possesses no talents which might compensate for this drawback. His rival for Susan Brown’s affections, however, is one John Wales. He is studying for a science degree at Cambridge, and thus acquiring not only the knowledge which will ensure that he will become the managing director of the family firm, but will also endow the polish of manner, the habit of command, the calm superiority of bearing, the attributes of a gentleman.

Fifty years on, we might change an odd word, and the family firm might now be multi-national, but the spirit of contemporary Britain’s class system is arguably the same. And so despite the aspiration for and perceived attainment of social change in post-war Britain, Room At The Top, juxtaposed with recent evidence, reminds us that very little, if anything, has changed – except for the cigarettes and the chamber pots, of course. Oh, and we might now also prefer lager.

Swing Vote Movie Review: Are Americans That Dumb?

In “Swing Vote,” Kevin Costner plays Bud Johnson, a newly unemployed factory worker whose well intentioned young daughter, Molly (Madeline Carroll), insists that he vote in the presidential election. The movie starts out with Bud going out on election nite, getting drunk and passing out. Not being able to get to the polling station, Molly decides to illegally cast a vote in Bud’s name, at which point the voting machine malfunctions. Bud’s cast vote is thus not counted and becomes the deciding vote in the nations most hotly contested election.


The thing is, Costner, is not too good at playing dumb. An underrated actor whose all-American good looks always seem to be hiding the talents of intelligence and reserve. Costner comes across as much too self-aware to be playing this ballcap-wearing, belly-scratching nimrod. Think back to the movies, “The Upside of Anger” and “Mr. Brooks.” In all actuality, Costner appears to be about 10 years too old for this role, and you left asking if they just couldn’t find someone younger.


Other problems have to do with the movies character who supposedly doesn’t know the difference between pro choice, and pro life. He doesn’t even know who’s running. But when NASCAR legend Richard Petty shows up outside his door to campain for the Republican candidate, Bud looks like a little kid who just got a pony at Christmas. What does this say about the stero type of middle America? Americans aren’t that dumb.


Once the two candidates learn that Bud will be able to cast his vote again in 10 days, the two candidates, played by Kelsy Grammer and Dennis Hopper quickly come to the town of Texico, where Bud lives in a trailer. Wasted talents also include Stanley Tucci and Nahtan Lane who play the candidates slimey campaign managers.


Basically, textbook Hollywood fodder, “Swing Vote” does not take any sides, and pulls all the regular punches…That the candidates are hollow and will flip flop on a position at the drop of a dime in order to appeal to Bud.


The movies two underlying themes are that a father must learn to appreciate the importance of family, and civic duty. While noteworthy, the film does have a tendency to take itself too seriously, and also takes a wild detour when Bud’s daughter decides to find her mentally unstable mother.

Autism: A Common Diagnosis

When a baby is born, the parents look it over, making sure all ten fingers and toes are in their place. Finding comfort and breathing a sigh of relief, the parents know that their new baby is “healthy”. A few months down the road, when the colic doesn’t subside or when the baby doesn’t look when it’s name is called, a little voice inside the mother’s head might begin to question what is happening. She knows something is not right, but can’t quite put her finger on it.


T H E N U M B E R S


Autism is a disorder that affects nearly 1 in 150 children each year, 75% of which are boys. Classic symptoms of the disorder include lack of eye contact, extreme sensitivity to sound, touch, or light, impaired communication and social skills, and repetitive behaviors such as hand flapping or obsession with spinning objects. Symptoms can be recognized as early as a few months or begin as late as age 3.


D I A G N O S I S


Autism is called a spectrum disorder, meaning there are different levels of severity and different intricacies with regard to symptoms. When the diagnosis is made that a child is autistic, parents are sent off into an unfamiliar world of confusion and heartache. That perfect baby they brought home from the hospital is no longer the child they thought it was. Their dreams of seeing their daughter walk down the aisle or their son play football are shattered by the label that is “special needs”.


What physicians and educators many times fail to express to parents during this sensitive time is that this child is a wonderful human being capable of experiencing love, laughter, pain, confusion and all of the other emotions we all feel. The difference is that people on the autistic spectrum do not communicate the same way others do. But, this does not mean that autistic children cannot grow up to be highly functioning citizens.


There are many schools of thought about why children become autistic and what can be done to help alleviate some of their symptoms. Theories about the causes of autism range from speculation about mercury used in childhood immunizations to genetic predisposition triggered by environmental factors, pesticides, antibiotics, Candida in the mother’s birth canal and the list goes on. Treatments range from behavioral to physiological with the ultimate goal being a higher functioning child.


T R E A T M E N T


The Defeat Autism Now organization believes that autism can be alleviated through chelation techniques used to draw out toxic metals and chemicals from the child’s system. Doctors in the DAN network use supplements, vitamin and mineral creams and other techniques under supervision to help stabilize the child’s toxin and mineral levels and lessen the severity of symptoms.


An example of a behavioral approach to treating autism is the ABA or Applied Behavior Analysis method. In this method, the child goes through intensive individualized behavioral work. Parents of autistic children often feel helpless when trying to navigate the educational system with an autistic child. While they believe one educational method would benefit their child, schools, teachers, administrators and therapists might have differing opinions. Parents can run the gamut of emotions in this situation from being complacent to being enraged and frustrated as school systems tend to focus more on financial constrictions rather than advocating for what is best for the child.


A diagnosis of autism is not a life sentence for parents or children, it is simply a different course in life than one might have expected. It is not an easy course by any means and requires a tremendous amount of time and motivation, but the rewards are worth the fight.


What are the rewards? Knowing that you are being an advocate for someone that cannot advocate for him or herself. Knowing that you will have done everything you could to help give this child the life they deserve to live. Knowing that in their own way, they really appreciate your love and support and need it every day. Knowing that you are doing what is best for you and your family.


If your child is autistic, find a network of friends who have autistic family members, communicate with them about your experiences, treatments, doctors, therapies, books, films and other media that can help you chart your course. You are not alone even though you might feel it sometimes. Don’t be afraid to reach out to others.


There are many people out there just like you who are looking for answers, so be active in the community around you and you will find the strength to cope. Fight for your child to be happy, but don’t forget about your own happiness. Your child may not be the one you once dreamed of, but they have gifts to share with you. It is your job to see them for who they are and not what you wish they had been.
