Homeopathy, Plant Spirit Shamanism, and Folk Medicine

Listening to the Plants – Nature is Talking to us.

The shamans say that plants connect us with nature because they take their nourishment directly from the earth, as well as the sun’s rays, the air, and water. They allow us to know and recognize ourselves. A shaman must know this and must love his people to heal them. Here are just a few of the plant healers.

Jergon Sacha (Dracontium peruviuanum)

My first exposure to this plant came about quite accidentally, when one day walking through the rainforest studying the properties of the plants, the maestro Javier queried why I always walked around with a machete. I jokingly replied “it’s against anacondas!”. He paused in thought for a moment and beckoned for me to follow him, a few minutes later we came across this tall stemmed plant. He proceeded to cut it down and then whip me around the body paying attention to my legs and the soles of my feet.. He then said “no more problems, you are protected against snakes”. I asked him why this plant was used in this way, and he indicated the pattern on the stem which looks identical to the snakes in the forest. Later as I started to investigate this plant even more, I discovered some interesting correspondences; this is a plant which is widely used as an antidote against snake bite venom in the Amazon.

This is accordance with the ‘doctrine of signatures’ concept. This doctrine is at the heart of homeopathy, folk medicine, and plant shamanism. The doctrine was revealed by the great alchemist and physician Paracelus who lived in the 16th Century. The underlying principle was that the healing properties of the plant are not only in the outer ‘physical’ form, but also in their inner or spiritual nature. The Doctrine of Signatures holds that this inner nature can be revealed by it’s outer physical form or signatures. This plant is a clear demonstration of the outer form indicating the inner qualities. It’s use is directly related to it’s physical appearance, the patterns on the tall stem closely resembles the skin patterns of the highly venomous pit viper known as ‘Bushmaster’ or Jararaca which is indigenous to the Amazon.

The large tuber of the plant is an well known and highly effective antidote for the bite of venomous snakes. The tuber is chopped up, and immersed in cold water and then drunk. Also the chopped tuber is placed in a banana leaf and used as a poultice which is wrapped around the bite area. These procedures are repeated every few hours. Of course the deal here is that it works, and as it not possible to store anti-venom vaccines in the rainforest without refrigeration, this plant has exceptional life-saving importance.

Mocura / Mucura Petivera Alliacea. This plant can be taken orally or used in floral baths to raise energy, or take you out of a saladera (a run of bad luck, inertia, sense of not living to the full). Gives mental strength and you can feel its effects as also with Ajo Sacha, both are varieties of ‘false’ garlic and have a penetrating aroma.

One of it’s qualities is that on a personal psychological level it can boost one’s strength. For example it is considered good in countering shyness, and can strengthen one’s own sense of personal value and authority. One of it’s properties is to help people overcome ‘irrational’ fears & fearful memories

Medicinal properties include asthma, bronchitis, reduction of fat and cholesterol. This plant grows widely in the lower Amazon, and it is used widely in purification (floral baths) .

Piñon Colorado Jatropha gossypifoilio

Has short lived effect after drinking but helps lucid dreaming later on when you go to bed. Can be used as a planta maestra and it is a plant that maestros can take when being during their initiation. Can also take with tobacco.

The plant’s properties on the physical level relate to problems such as, burns, swellings, intestinal parasites , Insect bites and stings, vaginal infections, and bronchitis. It is possible to take the resin which is much stronger but toxic if too much ingested. The resin can be applied directly to the skin.

Piri-piri, (Cyperaceae). Native people throughout the Amazon cultivate numerous varieties of medicinal sedges to treat a wide range of health problems, the native peoples for example, use sedge roots to treat headaches, fevers, cramps, dysentery and wounds as well as to ease childbirth. Special sedge varieties are cultivated by Shipiba women to improve their skill weaving and to protect their babies from illness.

Teresa a Shipiba craftswoman who joins us on our Amazon Retreats, told me that it is customary when the girls are very young for their mothers to squeeze a few drops of the ‘piri piri’ seed sap into their eyes in order to give their daughters the ability to have visions of the designs that she will make throughout her life.

The men cultivate special sedges to improve their hunting. Since the plant is used for such a wide range of conditions, it was once dismissed as being mere superstition. Pharmacological research has revealed the presence of ergot alkaloids, which are known to have diverse effects on the body from stimulation of the nervous system to constriction of blood vessels. These alkaloids are responsible for the wide range of medicinal uses. Apparently the ergot alkaloids come not from the plant itself but from a fungus that infects the plant.

Chanca piedra “Stone Breaker” (Phyllanthus Niruri)

This is a hybrid name “chanca” meaning “to break” in Quechua and “piedra” meaning “stone” in Spanish. This herb from the Amazon has been used by the indigenous peoples of the Rainforest for generations as an effective remedy to eliminate gall, and kidney stones. The plant has demonstrated its effectiveness against many illnesses including, kidney problems , urinary problems, colic, dysentery, jaundice and numerous other conditions. This herb has become widely used in South America as the herbal remedy for gall and kidney stones, and can typically be bought in capsule or leaf form from many stores. This plant is used only for its pharmaceutical properties, and is not a planta maestra. As a note, this plant is also starting to become known in Western Medical circles, as when I brought some back for my mother to help her with her kidney stones, her doctor was apparently familiar with this herb, but he still didn’t want her to use it due to possible contra-indications with the prescribed pharmaceutical medicine.

Reflections.

On reflection plant medicine is totally different than pharmaceutical medication which only affects one whilst it is being taken; these kinds of plant medicines seem to have a permanent effect in some way metaphorical or otherwise altering one’s consciousness or “DNA”. Paracelus, is still a source of inspiration to all those who work with the healing properties of herbs, and the plants.

One of the great revelations that we can experience in working with the plant spirit or consciousness is that we are not separate from the natural world. In our culture we perceive ourselves to be separate beings with our minds firmly embedded within our physical being (typically our head). The plants can show you that this way of being is an illusion and that we are all connected, all of us and everything else is a discrete element in the great universal field of consciousness or spirit.

My Dream Home May be in Another City

  • Posted on January 23, 2010 at 8:20 pm

I am sure you are all aware of the drop in home prices that has come with all the sub-prime mortgage mess and economic recession.  In San Diego, where I have lived most of my life, homes prices have fallen approximately 25%.  In my opinion they are simply coming in line with what they are actually worth.  I live in an area called Bay Park, near the coast.  Most of the homes are very modest and unremarkable but because of their proximity to the ocean they are very, very expensive.  At the height of the market, the home that I am currently renting, which is only about 1,200 square feet was worth about $800,000.  Give me a break.  Another example of this insanity is a custom home that was recently completed down the street from me and now it is for sale.  The asking price is $1.25 million.  Yikes!  It’s nice and all but in no way is it worth that much money.

But, now many of the homes that are on the market in my neighborhood have come down to under $600k (still a lot).  There was even a home that went for under $400k just two doors down from me, it was a bank repossession.  It went so fast that they never even put a sign on the lawn.

Anyways, the bottom line is that the time is upon right to start getting serious about home buying. Or, at least that is the pressure I feel I am under.  I guess I have never considered myself ready to buy.  This may be more of a mental barrier than an economic one.  I have done some inquiring.  I have a friend who is a mortgage broker and he has given me some good information about loans and the market in general.  It’s pretty daunting.

Prices aside, I do know basically what I want, a 2000 square foot 4 bedroom, 3 bathroom house with a master suite.  My wife and I have three kids and in our relatively small home, space and privacy are a problem.  I would like a separate dining room with a large table that can seat 10-12 people.  I like entertaining. I would love custom blinds and wood floors throughout and some nice area rugs for warmth and color.  I would also love a view of the ocean, which is something I have now, albeit from afar.  I would like a decent sized lot so that my kids have a backyard to play in.  Last but not least, I want a two car garage.

Sounds pretty much like the typical American family home.  Here in San Diego – no scratch that – here in Southern California – no scratch that too; anywhere near the coast in California, the price for that home is in the $3/4 million range and up, probably way up.  So, maybe the reality is that my dream home exists in another state.  The barriers to home buying have become so high over the last two decades, it is no wonder so many people got into so much trouble.  Desperation (buyers) coupled with greed (mortgage brokers and banks) is a dangerous mix.  I can also understand why people are leaving California, so they can find an affordable piece of the American dream of home ownership.  My Father lives in Tennessee and he owns a home that is bigger than my dream home on a full acre of land in a nice community.  He bought it for around $130k 10 or 12 years ago and it’s now worth approximately $200k.  His mortgage is less than one thousand dollars.

To leave California, or even San Diego for that matter means that I would be leaving most of my extended family.  This too is a high price to pay.  The irony is that we all seem to stay put for each other even though we would all rather live somewhere else.  San Diego just doesn’t fulfill our needs for community, access to nature and affordability.

I know what I want but I don’t know that I can afford it, maybe ever.  And, I am not willing to leave San Diego for family reasons and because my oldest daughter starts High School in the Fall.  So for now, I guess I need to make the most of my affordable rental house even though I hate the thought of investing money in a home I don’t own.

Alchemy, Shamanism, Organic Food, and the Doctrine of Signatures

  • Posted on January 23, 2010 at 4:08 pm

The 16th century alchemist and philosopher, Paracelsus, introduced in his treatise the Doctrine of Signatures , the concept that the Creator has placed his seal on plants to indicate their medicinal uses.

Underlying Paracelsus’ treatise was the premise that nature was itself a living organism which must be considered an expression of “the One Life”, and that man and the universe are the same in their essential nature.

The 16th century alchemist and philosopher, Paracelsus, introduced in his treatise the Doctrine of Signatures , the concept that the Creator has placed his seal on plants to indicate their medicinal uses.

In this book of nature, Paracelsus noticed how the qualities of plants so often reflected their appearance – that the seeds of skullcap, for example, resemble small skulls and, it transpires, are effective at curing headache. Similarly, the hollow stalk of garlic resembles the windpipe and it is used for throat and bronchial problems. By the same token, willow grows in damp places and will heal rheumatic conditions.

Because of this, Paracelsus held that the inner nature of plants may be discovered by their outer forms or ‘signatures’. He applied this principle to food as well as medicine, remarking that “it is not in the quantity of food but in its quality that resides the Spirit of Life” – a belief familiar to those who choose to eat organic food and share the common concern over Genetically Modified substitutes that they lack ‘life force’, or spirit. According to Paracelsus, then, the appearance of a plant is the gateway to its spirit or consciousness

Shamans recognise the spiritual powers and qualities of plants in many ways: the colours of the flowers, their perfumes, the shape and form of their leaves, where they are growing and in what ways, the moods they evoke, and the wider geographical, cultural, or mythological landscapes they occupy

The doctrine of signatures treatise is not something known by indigenous shamans, but they understand the principles behind it well enough, that nature has spirit and communicates with us. These principles are not regarded as fanciful at all, but so important that they can save lives.

I discovered how the doctrine of signatures operates in the Amazon, for example, during my experiences with the Jergon Sacha plant.

Jergon Sacha (Dracontium peruviuanum)

My first exposure to this plant came about quite accidentally, when one day walking through the rainforest studying the properties of the plants, the maestro Javier queried why I always walked around with a machete. Autistic Children – Pride and Prejudice

  • Posted on January 23, 2010 at 1:20 pm

The news that a child in the family is autistic is most often met with a number of reactions. While all family members, even extended, would be supportive in an ideal world, the sad truth is that many are disgusted or disappointed. Does a family member scold the autistic child often? Does he or she look at your autistic child unfairly? Does this family member insist on treating your autistic child the same way he or she treats all the other children in your family, even when it is inappropriate? These are signs that this relative is not receptive to either your autistic child or the situation. This may often be the case when discovering a child is autistic, so as a parent, be aware and prepared for this to happen.

Often, unreceptive relatives simply do not understand what autism is or what it means for your child and your immediate family. Though many see autism as a mental retardation, many autistic children and adults are highly intelligent; they are just unable to communicate this in the same ways that others would. Try explaining what autism means to this family member, and have him or her spend some time with you and your autistic child. Allow them to see the effects of autism and the methods you can use to cope.

If the family member continues to be unsupportive or refuses your explanation, ask why this family member is so unreceptive to the situation. Are they scared of hurting the child? Are they worried about the added responsibility when spending time with the child? Perhaps they feel guilty or are embarrassed. If you can pinpoint why a family member is unreceptive, you can better address the issue and hopefully help him or her overcome their original perceptions.

Perhaps no amount of talking or spending time together will help this family member overcome their prejudice. If this person has stubbornly made up his or her mind, you will never be able to show him or her how beautiful your son or daughter is autism and all. If this is the case, eliminating this person from your life may be difficult, but it will also rid you and your child of this family member’s negative energy and personality. In this developing situation, you need the best positive support available. Remember that other family members have been supportive; that your children are adjusting well and are a source of strength for you. Strengthen your support network by participating in parent support groups for autistic children. And remember that you can surround yourself with those who do accept and love your child’s family or not.

No Tobacco Day

  • Posted on January 23, 2010 at 10:08 am

It was a Sunday morning, I woke up late and turned in my bed in search of a cigarette.

While turning my pillow I felt a peculiar burnt smell which was not a pleasant one.

I tried to find out what was the smell due to?

I rubbed my head with my hand and smelt.

It was the same nasty smell more intense.

It was the smell of cigarette smoke!

On Saturday night I was with two of my friends in a small stuffy French pub where men and women smoked, drunk and danced all night.

We also participated in those activities and enjoyed the night.

It was at 3 am, my friends dropped me at my apartment.

Somehow I could open the door and entered the room.

After smoking a cigarette, I slept.

The puffing in the pub by so many people stuffed the smoke into every ones dress, body including the exposed hair of the head.

I never realized the harmful nature of the tobacco smoke, but I thought it was fun and enjoyment.

It was when I left for France 40 years ago, I started smoking the foreign cigarettes to start with.

Later when I came back to India, the habit continued till 1996.

When I used to travel in train, I used to smoke without any respect for the co-passengers – men, women or children.

I was deriving a kind of pleasure in taking out a cigarette from the pack and light it either with a lighter which I brought from France or later with match stick made in Sivakasi.

I left smoking three times on the eves of New Year.

It hardly lasted for a month or two.

During this period I used to have good apatite and put on weight.

I read some where one of the consequences of quitting smoking is increase in body weight.

In spite of my wife, son and daughter’s advice, I could not leave smoking.

In 1996, one fine morning, I decided myself with a great determination and will power ‘not to smoke’ from that day.

Fortunately it continues to date.

When I travel, I could smell the cigarette or beedi smoke coming from long distance.

When I used to smoke in those days, I never could smell the smoke coming out of my cigarette.

Now I have become so sensitive to the bad smell of cigarette smoke.

I realized how harmful I was for those who traveled with me in those days.

Also I felt sorry that how much displeasure I would have caused to those men, women and children who never asked me to stop smoking.

What a shameful life I lived making others uncomfortable.

They would have cursed me in their mind.

Two years ago when I was traveling in the train, a middle aged man was smoking in the compartment as I used to do earlier.

I saw an young lady, came to him and requested him to stop smoking.

The man who was smoking felt very bad and extinguished the bit of burning cigarette and threw it out.

I was happy that such an incident did not happen to me in those days!

Every one has a freedom to express to safeguard public health.

That was what that young lady did boldly.

Tobacco consumption in whatever form is harmful for health.

It appears that China is the largest producer and consumer of tobacco.

There are 350 million smokers in China according to an article published in a news paper.

It is a common ritual in Chinese wedding it adds.

Banning tobacco cultivation itself is one way of putting off puffing.

Increasing the cost of cigarette and its associates by imposing taxes is another measure many Governments took.

The Finance Minister in every year budget speech made it a point to add tax for cigarettes and tobacco products.

The Governments gave statutory warning in cigarette packets itself saying cigarette smoking is injurious to health to create awareness.

Recently one of the health ministers of Government of India brought a rule that smoking scenes should not be shown in cinema.

These are measures to create awareness among the public not to smoke.

Tobacco business is a biggest money earner in many countries.

Millions of people are employed in both production and processing of tobacco.

Considering the economic importance of income and creation of employment for country men and women, it becomes a sensitive issue for governments to bring strict rules to abolish the use of tobacco.

However, health consciousness among the public has brought down the smoking to a considerable extent.

It is a good sign; even without imposing hard rules, people themselves change for the best.

We hope the World No Tobacco Day on 31 May every year will remind people to wind up the bad habit of smoking and other ways of consuming tobacco.

In Bible versus Quran: the Nephilim were on the Earth in those Days

The Sons of the Lord God in Bible versus Quran (2)

This is the second article of the series:” The Sons of the Lord God in Bible versus Quran”.

The Bible says that the Lord God, the Almighty Creator, has SONS who were married the daughters of men.  When the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

The Quran says that Allah, the Almighty Creator, has neither a son nor a partner.  Allah is the Self-Sufficient, the eternally Besought of all; the One Who is always sought at times of need.

The Sons of the Lord God in the Bible (2)

The Bible says that the Sons of the Lord God, the Almighty Creator, were married the daughters of men.  When the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

But the Bible does not tell the names of the sons of the Lord God,

The Bible also does not give the physical attributes of the sons of the Lord God. In addition, the Bible does not tell what the number of the sons of the Lord God was and how many they were?

In short, the Bible does not let us know who, how, when, where, how many etc. in respect to the sons of the Lord God.

On the other hand, the Bible gives some informative details about the sons of the kings of Israel, for example, but does not give any details about the Sons of the Lord God, the Almighty Creator, who are of course very much more important than the sons of the kings of Judah .

On the other hand, the Quran makes it very clear and says that Allah, the Almighty Creator, has neither a son nor a partner.

Genesis 6:4

New International Version

4 The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of God went to the daughters of men and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown.

New American Standard Bible

4The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.

English Standard Version

4The Nephilim (Or giants) were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown.

King James Version

4There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

Young’s Literal Translation

4The fallen ones were in the earth in those days, and even afterwards when sons of God come in unto daughters of men, and they have borne to them — they [are] the heroes, who, from of old, [are] the men of name.

The Sons of the Lord God in the Quran (2)

The Quran firmly forbids saying that Allah has a son.

It is not befitting for the Majesty of Allah to take to Himself a son.

In Islam, this point is very important faith wise.

In a very simple word, Allah, the Almighty Creator, has neither a son nor a partner.

Again, it is unforgivable sin to say or to believe that The One Almighty Creator who is Allah or God or the Lord or Jehovah or whatever you name Him has a son or sons.

A group of the disbelievers and the idolaters’ people of Mecca went to the Prophet Muhammad, and said to him:

Describe to us your Lord,

What is the lineage of your Lord?

what is He made of?

And to which species does He belong?

Is He made of gold, copper or silver?

Does He eat and drink?

Who did He inherit this world from?

And to whom will He bequeath it?’

and so Allah, exalted is He, revealed this Surah (Chapter 112) to describe His attributes and traits, saying:

Say (O Muhammad): He is Allah, the One!

He has no son or partner.

Allah is the Self-Sufficient, the eternally Besought of all; the One Who is always sought at times of need,

He begets not, nor is he begotten, for anyone who is begotten will certainly die and whoever dies will be inherited. Allah does not die nor is He inherited.

And there is none comparable unto Him.

He does not have anyone who resembles Him or is like Him

Naught is as His likeness

From the Islamic point of view, the conclusion of this essential topic that may establish or destroy the faith is that:

Any one who believe that the Almighty Creator has a son or sons; he messes his faith up and is considered as a disbeliever and in the afterlife he will end up as an eternal inhabitant of the hell.

Any one who believe that the Creator has neither a son nor a partner; he has a good faith and is considered as a believer and in the afterlife he will end up as an eternal inhabitant of the paradise.

The meanings of Surah (Chapter) 112 of the Noble Quran:

Say: He is Allah, the one; He is the Master whose glory is at its peak and for Whom all created beings are in need;

It is also said that means: He Who does not eat or drink;

It is also said that this means: He Who does not have an interior;

It is also said that this means: He is the Everlasting; He is the Sufficient;

It is also said that this means: He who does not have an entrance or exit.

He begets not, nor is he begotten

He neither begot, for no likeness of Him can exist, nor was begotten, since createdness is precluded in His case.

He did not inherit and will not be inherited;

And it is also said this means: He does not have a son who will inherit His dominion and He was not begotten, which means that He did not inherit His dominion.

Nor is there anyone equal to Him’, neither match nor comparison

there is none comparable unto Him

He does not have an opposite, peer, or equal nor anyone who may resemble or begin to resemble Him;

and it is also said this means: He does not have any co-equal who would compete with Him about dominion and sovereignty’.

Verse 112:2

My daughter’s fiance’s alcoholic brother is once again living with them?

  • Posted on January 23, 2010 at 8:08 am

In the few short years that they have been together, my daughter’s fiance’s brother has lived with them everywhere they have lived. The first place, he moved in with them after just a month…then got busted for dealing and went to jail. The second place they lived he moved back in with them after he got out of jail…then got rearrested for violating parole. The third place they lived, he moved right in with them like a piece of furniture right out of his second jail term. He was asked to leave there and go to rehab because he got in my daughters face claiming she stole his money…she didnt, he spent his money on drugs and admitted to such later. He went to rehab and then stayed at his mom and dad for a few months afterwards until they got tired of him mouthing off and just basically being a lazy good for nothing. When my daughter and her fiance moved this last time I asked them if his brother was going to be allowed to live with them again which my daughter said that her fiance promised to never let his brother live with them again. less than a month later, he had moved in with them again! Her fiance is leaving for Afghanistan in Jan 2010…is it wrong of me to confront the brother and demand he be out well before then because my daughter will not speak up for herself? Her fiance will not be there to keep his brother in line and I think he could very well harm her…in which case, jail couldn’t save him from what Id do to him.
my daughter and her fiance do not do drugs as he is in the national guard and would be kicked out for testing positive. Also, my daughter does not drink.
she is only 20 and is very timid and shy
she cannot leave since the apartment is in her name only because her fiance has bad credit…red flag #50
I guess my only hope is that the brother goes back to jail
