So I was given percocet for my sciatic nerve that hurts me really really badly ever since I was pregnant with my daughter, My doctor said that it has minimal effects on a nursing baby and I am only on a 5 mg pill. My doctor said to just watch for her breathing and eating habits changing. I am still worried that it could harm her, because for one I go to Army docs and they don’t always know what they are talking about (they usually look stuff up online when I am in the room asking) I just really want to know if there are any other mothers out there that take percocet while nursing and how it effected the baby, and what the effects were??

Sorry, the comment form is now closed.
It’s in the B class, and it’s not been reviewed by the Hale system on whether or not it can damage an infant if the mother takes it while nursing. It’s not AAP approved, but I know many women who have taken vicodin (which contains much the same as percocet) and that’s fine.

Special information if you are pregnant or breastfeeding

It is not known whether Percocet can injure a developing baby or affect a woman’s reproductive capacity. Using any medication that contains a narcotic during pregnancy may cause physical addiction for your newborn baby. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, inform your doctor immediately. As with other narcotic painkillers, taking Percocet shortly before delivery (especially at higher dosages) may cause some degree of impaired breathing in the mother and newborn. It is not known whether Percocet appears in breast milk, possibly harming a nursing infant. If you are breastfeeding use Percocet only under a doctor’s directions.

Your doctor is okay in giving it to you, and for the warnings about waching the breathing, you should be okay.
I was given percocet for my c section and I was nursing.
No Percocet is not known to directly harm babies HOWEVER if you talk to the leading person in breastfeeding Dr Jack Neuman. He will tell you that percocet will decrease your milk supply. And I have witnessed it first hand. They often give post c-section moms percocet and sure enough there babies screaming because its hungry and mom doesnt have enough milk. My suggestion is that if you really still want to keep breastfeeding dont use the percocets take Naproxen instead. Naproxen is just a stronger version of advil also naproxen does not have any mind altering affects But Percocets do.
Good luck
i am still pregnant (31 weeks) but have been told by my doctor and other mothers that you need to treat your body as you would when you were pregnant while you’re nursing. Even things such as nicotine get into the milk and can have effects on the baby. If you drink alcohol, the baby drinks alcohol, etc…. . Basically, I would avoid the percocet.
Percocet is fine. After delivery I was on it along with Tylenol #3 and Vicodin. They had no effect on my milk supply and no effect on my daughter.
