I’m sure his conscience has suffered enough. [sarcasm]

Daniel Edwin Jones served four years in prison for having sex with a 16-year-old Coon Rapids girl 10 years ago as she lay dying from a methamphetamine overdose.

In 2008, he settled a wrongful death lawsuit with Brittany Powell’s mother for $2 million.

His debt to society has officially been paid. His financial debt to Brittany’s family remains outstanding.

“He did not abide by the agreement he signed,” said Brittany’s mother, Victoria Powell. “He’s shown up at certain legal events in his limousine, with his driver, and then in deposition pleads poverty.”

The settlement calls for Jones, 28, a member of the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux tribe, which owns Mystic Lake Casino in Prior Lake, to pay the family $500,000 upfront, followed by monthly payments of $10,000 until the debt is paid.

“His income per year is over $900,000,” said Fred Soucie, an attorney for Victoria Powell.

Jones, who has never held a job but receives hefty checks twice monthly from his tribe, has made little progress toward paying the $2 million, Soucie said. Instead, he has claimed in court he is swimming in debt and unable to come up with more than $10,000 per month.

The unpaid legal judgment underscores any number of discussions about victims’ rights and a convicted felon’s obligations to the family of those he has harmed: How much is a human life worth, and when is it paid for in full?

The legal battle has also brought unwelcome attention

to the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux, a small but prosperous tribe whose members have made millions from casino revenues. For the Powell family, it’s drawn salt into a gruesome wound they are still struggling to come to terms with.

Jones did not return phone calls seeking comment, but his attorney, Sam McCloud, said his client hopes to negotiate a new payment plan in light of his debts.

“The bottom line is he has very little spendable money,” McCloud said. “… He’s got problems like anyone else. He’s got a house in foreclosure.”

CONSERVATOR HANDLING CASE

In November 2000, as Brittany overdosed on more than twice a lethal dose of meth, Jones took sexual advantage of her at a Burnsville trailer home. At trial, prosecutors alleged that when his cousin and a friend stopped by and found her in obvious distress, Jones prevented them from calling 911.

Brittany, who had told her mother she planned to shake drugs by moving in with her older sister in Kentucky, was dead by the time the group arrived at Fairview Ridges Hospital in Burnsville. Jones, who was 18 at the time of the assault, was acquitted of her murder but convicted of two counts of criminal sexual assault and one count each of child neglect and child endangerment.

To date, Jones has paid the family roughly $150,000, McCloud said, and his complicated finances are now being handled by a conservator, a third party designated by the tribal council.

“I am very interested in what the tribal conservatorship does with this man’s debt to the family of his victim, and whether or not his debt is going to be honored,” said Soucie, Victoria Powell’s attorney. “It’s hard for me to envision a more heinous act than what this man did to this child.”

In a brief written statement, however, the tribal council denied any involvement in the civil case.

“The issue is a personal one to Mr. Jones. The tribal government is not a party in this matter,” they wrote. “The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community firmly believes that individual tribal members must be accountable for their personal acts; in this matter, Mr. Jones must satisfy his personal obligations to the plaintiffs as adjudicated by the courts.”

In August 2008, Dakota County District Judge Kathryn Messerich found that Jones had breached the settlement agreement reached in May that year by failing to give Powell’s family the $500,000 lump sum upfront. Messerich ordered him to pay by September 2008, which he did not do.

Soucie maintains that Jones has the resources to pay. In fact, he believes Jones has been flashing his deep pockets and disrespect for Brittany’s family by showing up to court in a black limousine and making snide remarks as he leaves the courtroom.

“Jones conveyed and continues to flaunt a ‘you can never touch me’ attitude with broken promises and ostentatious behavior,” Soucie wrote in a November 2009 court filing.

TWO DIFFERENT STORIES

Separate depositions of Jones and his wife, Fabiola Martinez, reveal the Mdewakanton tribe pays Jones roughly $38,000 every two weeks.

In addition to Mystic Lake, the tribe owns the smaller Little Six Casino, the Dakotah Meadows RV Park, several smaller business ventures and 2,800 acres of land in the Shakopee and Prior Lake area.

News for Native Americans, Police Brutality, Government Conspiracies, Corruption, Cover-ups

Soucie said $2 million isn’t such a large sum relative to the $50 million Jones can expect to collect over the course of his lifetime. And he’s flouted legal rulings before.

Jones’ rap sheet includes convictions for fleeing police in a motor vehicle in 2004 and 2001, meth possession in 2003, drunken driving in 2004 and 2002 and underage alcohol consumption in 2004 and 2001.

In depositions, however, Jones has painted an entirely different picture of himself. He said he’s cash-strapped, overwhelmed by debt and demands from creditors and dependent on his wife’s family for basic necessities.

McCloud maintains the tribe plans to reduce his client’s income because the economic slowdown has taken a bite from its casino revenue.

He said the legal settlement has become a Catch-22 for Jones. The settlement, which was negotiated by a previous attorney, called for $500,000 upfront, which Jones had planned to borrow but said he was ultimately unable to do. When that money fell through, the Powell family began charging interest.

“He was making the monthly payments, but it turned out the monthly payments were doing him no good, because they were charging him interest,” McCloud said. “Every $10,000 payment that he made … wasn’t reducing the principal. That essentially means you pay $10,000 for the rest of your life.”

The conservator who now handles his money wants to renegotiate the terms of the settlement, McCloud said.

“(Daniel’s) not trying to run from it. He got bad legal advice that got him sucked into this. He’s not trying to avoid anything. He wants to pay them $2 million,” McCloud said. “If they would accept $10,000 a month until the $2 million is paid, we’d be done with it. The only reason we’re not in the position right now is because his prior lawyer made a deal to pay money upfront without having the money in place.”

TIME OFF FOR GOOD BEHAVIOR

Questioned before a Scott County District Court judge in Shakopee in March 2009, Jones said he was falling behind on mortgage and utility payments. His 20-year-old brother had died two months earlier, and he was paying for the funeral and shopping for a gravestone.

Among his creditors were the Internal Revenue Service, Dakota County, his mortgage lender, the tribe itself and Brittany Powell’s family. He was also paying child support and attorney’s fees related to a custody dispute.

“Lately, (I’m) borrowing money from family members and stuff, friends, when I can’t cover (my mortgage),” said Jones, who said he was having little success urging friends to buy one of his homes from him. “Right now, I’m just in a big slump.”

Jones, who said he had never held a job other than a brief stint with a youth-enrichment program as a kid, said he owned two homes, a Mercedes-Benz, a second car and a fishing boat, though one of the homes was in foreclosure. He planned to enroll in a chef’s school.

Jones has disputed aspects of the civil and criminal cases related to Brittany’s death.

In 2004, he maintained throughout his criminal trial in 2004 that he did, in fact, have sex with Brittany, but it was in the early afternoon, hours before she fell comatose from abusing meth. His attorney at the time said the reason he discouraged his cousin and another acquaintance from calling 911 after they noticed her in distress was because he felt it would be quicker to get her to a hospital by car.

A jury concluded he’d had sex with Powell when she was physically helpless but stopped short of agreeing he supplied the drugs that killed her.

Jones twice appealed his 8 1/2-year prison sentence, arguing it was two years longer than the term mandated by state guidelines. In February 2009, his term was reduced to six years and 10 months. He had already been released from prison in April 2008 after time off for good behavior.

Soucie hopes to convince Jones to pay Powell’s family at least $38,000 every two weeks. He said that if Jones does not increase his monthly payments, he could be held in contempt of court and jailed.

“At this point we have not had that order issued by the judge,” Soucie said.

Keep track of this scourge of society by visiting his personal page at the Minnesota Department Of Corrections HERE

Interesting to note that he was admitted to jail 2/24/2009 and was released 3/5/2009

Must be nice to have so much money. He’s been buying himself out of trouble his whole life, when will it stop, when he finally kills someone? oh wait…. too late.

DANIEL EDWIN JONES: A Career Criminal With No Conscience
Daniel Jones clearly has no intention of honoring the wrongful death civil lawsuit settlement he signed with advice of legal counsel, agreeing to pay Brittany Powell’s mother Victoria $2 million via a mutually agreed upon payment schedule.
Jones’ caustic, sneering, sarcastic comments deliberately uttered within earshot of Victoria during court appearances are designed to demean and hurt her; a snide and outrageous attempt to increase the pain and sorrow that Victoria endures as she grieves the tragic loss of her daughter.
Jones’ enthusiastic ally is criminal defense lawyer Sam McCloud, famous for admiring and defending drunk drivers but always willing to make excuses for any criminal who tries to avoid the consequences of his criminal conduct.
Jones should be found in contempt of court and sent to prison, and the court should order his conservator to immediately pay Victoria the $500,000 lump sum required by the settlement plus a minimum of $35,000 per month until the entire $2 million financial obligation is paid in full.
Career criminals like David Edwin Jones have no credibility and don’t deserve any favors from the criminal justice system. Jones’ excuses for failing to pay his debt to Brittany’s family are transparently false and ludicrous. Cry me a river, Mr. Jones.

While there is some legal evidence that those who claim to be the rightful tribal owners of that land are frauds (their surname of Crooks is a delicious irony), it’s also true that the tribes in the dakotas are insanely jealous of the Shakopee Sioux who lucked into their obscene wealth while the Indians in the Dakotas still don’t have a pot to piss in.

Prison should be hard labor no TVs and murder inside should be punishable by mandatory hanging. MN should have non-Indian casinos as competition, also why aren’t they giving a good majority of their earnings to South and North Dakota tribes, ones that actually resisted the US Army for them?
Your casino dollars hard at work. Anyone gambling there is supporting people like this.

seriously? this just goes to show that if you are handed everything on a silver platter and never made to work for anything in your life you just aren’t functional. One more reason why the state of MN should get their hands in on the abundant revenues apparently being paid out to the Indians. See no reason why they should have the monopoly on something just because of what was done to their great ancestors who most of them probably can’t even trace back. If that is the case, why aren’t the ancestors of slaves being given $900,000 a year too. Jeesh- He makes more in one month than I do in a year and he can’t pay his bills? maybe they should garnish it from the tribe. Oh wait – they have their own tribal laws and council so they can’t. stupid!

oh you don’t like paying interest? tell that to the millions of Americans crippled by credit card debt… not to mention what you are in debt for!!! what a scumbag! why is this guy not in jail?
i guess i don’t know how Indian tribes work but: a) why do they seem to have this guy’s back, and b) who decides to keep paying a felon $80,000 a month to do nothing simply because he’s a member of the tribe?

$2,000,000 judgment
-$500,000 upfront
-$120,00 (12 payments @$10,000 each)
Balance =$1,380,000
That is 69 payments of $20,000. I’m thinking monthly. He would seem to have the income to support that.

Affula Saint Paul, MN

if the tribe is actually that rich that they can not care about paying its felon tribal members $80,000 a month to blow however they feel, then I got one thing to say: LEGALIZE GAMBLING IN THIS STATE! NOW!

Another reason to vote for racino. If this tribe can give 38,000 every two weeks to noncontributing members then the tribe has made more than enough and the monopoly should end.

Indian Tears Saint Paul, MN

Unfortunately this is one area where stereotypes do fit. The problem of young people with huge incomes from casino profits getting into trouble with drugs, the law, etc. is repeated at every Indian casino. Tribes do nothing to alleviate the problem. The general attitude among tribes and their members seems to be, “Give me the money and f*%$ you! You can’t touch me. The laws of society do no apply to us.”
This behavior is enabled by all tribe members.

The Last Straw Saint Paul, MN

I was aware that tribe members received “a lot” from the casinos, but no idea it was this much. The fact that these casinos contribute next to nothing back to the state is the last piece of info I needed … I’ll never again step foot into a MN casino. Too many restaurants, etc. in the cities that need our support …

Get a Grip Saint Paul, MN

What short sighted moron ever thought up the idea of Indian Gaming. It didn’t empower them, it created garbage like this.
We pay our debt to Indian Tribes by showering them with money and keeping them completely incapable of surviving a modern day existence.
No offense intended, but I’m thinking that in 2010 Indians would not now be following the great herds of buffalo in a peaceful existence the way they had done for centuries whether the white man showed up or not?
Eventually they would have had to modernize like all other native peoples all over earth have done.
You’re better than that folks……

I heard something once about if you are caught swearing, they had a way to cover all the offensive language but the one I remember is FUCK…. What if you accidently blurt out FUCK in a public place?

Lets give the example of church; if you are in church, pta, anywhere that language of that nature should be avoided, and you forget to avoid it for an instance, you can add "eddabout it" to the end.

as an example, the paster tells you that your son just dropped a dog turd in the holy water, and you grab your son and start to yell FUCK… and then swiftly add the following “eddabout it" (fuckeddabout it) You may sound a little like an old style Italian mafioso, but you successfully managed to cover your vulgar Faux Pas

funny stuff! lol

Here is another example of getting yourself out of the trouble your big mouth causes: This one brought to my attention by my good friend Tim the dentist in Des Moines IA.

A man in a Florida supermarket tries to buy half a head of lettuce.

It’s well known that when professionals who work with children build strong relationships with parents, better outcomes are often the result. But how do you go about connecting with parents to forge meaningful, long-lasting partnerships? It’s not always obvious or intuitive, even to the best or most experienced professionals.

I’ve been on both sides – both professional and parent. In my days as a high school teacher, invariably my students improved in all kinds of ways when I took the initiative to reach out to their parents. Now, as a mother of a child with special needs, I see the wisdom, and the results, of professionals and practitioners who consider their relationship with parents to be just as important as their relationship with the children who are their patients, students, group members, etc.

Part of what I do is help professionals who work with children to refine and enhance their parent-professional relationship building skills. Here are some tips and strategies you may find helpful:

1. Great communication is key.
How and when can parents reach you if they have questions? Interestingly, the more available you make yourself for questions and discussion, the more comfortable and confident parents will feel about you and your services.

2. Offer ways for parents to help out.
Parents are often very grateful to you for the work you’re doing with their sons and daughters. If there are some simple ways they can be of help in your organization, practice, or agency, invite them to become involved.

3. Invite parents into the classroom.
If you work in a classroom setting, make parents feel welcome to visit. This may be an open invitation, or a list of dates and times parents can choose from. Parents love to visit and see their children in action!

4. Invite parents into therapy sessions whenever possible.
What they learn from observing you will make it easier for them to follow through at home.

5. Be open to parent research and ideas.
Parents of children with special needs and special health care needs often do their own research and talk with other parents. They may bring you a copy of a study they found interesting, or they may ask whether a certain type of therapy, treatment, or classroom intervention might be appropriate for their child.

6. Give parents copies of relevant articles, and recommend books you think they should read.
Even if they don’t read these right away, parents appreciate not only the information you’re giving them, but also the fact that you value their intellectual side.

7. Don’t be afraid to say “I don’t know.”
As a professional, parents often see you as the expert. Constantly trying to live up to that expectation can be stressful and draining! If a parent asks a question and you aren’t sure of the answer, it’s okay to say you’ll look into it or do some research and then get back to them. Parents will appreciate your thoroughness.

8. Acknowledge parents’ fears, worries, and hesitations.
Parents of children with special needs often have been through a lot with their children, and may be reluctant to try things that are new or different. Transitions are often difficult as well. You can help them along their learning curve by validating their feelings.

9. Speak and write about the good stuff, too.
In your conversations with parents, and in your progress notes, always mention the positives. Tell of the child’s strengths, of some nice moments … find SOMETHING positive to say, even if on some days it’s a stretch! Parents of children with special needs are so used to hearing about what’s wrong with their child – they’ll be grateful for your insights into their child’s good points, too!

10. Be a resource.
Especially for parents who have just received their child’s diagnosis, if you can recommend some local resources for them – such as a support group, organization, or agency, you will be doing those parents a HUGE favor. Often, these parents are too overwhelmed to find these resources on their own.

11. Ask parents whether they’ve run into any obstacles to implementing your recommendations at home.
If they have, brainstorm with them some possible solutions. Based on your own past experience, as well as experiences of other families you’ve worked with, you may often know of some simple solutions that might not occur to parents. And any time you can help parents find ways to follow through on your recommendations, the result is more successful outcomes for the children you work with.

As I jetted the streets of Chicago in a perverse attempt to find a liquor store that still carried Mad Dog 20/20, I reflected on how odd timing could be. Not thirty minutes ago I was a doctoral student sitting in lecture at a prestigious, private university and now I was actively seeking a substance whose sole purpose was the destruction of the brain I was just developing. Truthfully, this was the first time I was ever looking to buy some Mad Dog; though I do remember it floating around throughout my college years. So, when I jumped in my car I never thought that this search would be so difficult; I just assumed I could get it anywhere. But, as I continued to swerve my little Saturn from liquor store to liquor store, I kept receiving the same twisted dirty look from the staff when I asked where they kept their Mad Dog.

After about an hour of scouring the city streets I hit pay dirt. The clerk had to go all the way to the back of the store, move some boxes out of the way and dig out my prize. When I went to the register the second clerk asked to see my I.D. As I reached for my wallet the first interjected quickly and said, “Now, we don’t need to see his I.D. I trust him.” With that he shot me a sly wink and bagged up my three bottles. He must have thought he was doing some underage kid a favor. I wanted to scream that I was really over 21 (by quite a many years) and decree the real reason I was purchasing this vile liquor. But I hesitated and thought, maybe it just makes more sense to him that a youngin’ was buying such an inexpensive, atrocious alcohol. After all, what respectable doctoral student would?

At this point you may think this article to be about the trappings of a young alcoholic. Now, while working toward a Ph.D. may drive me into the bottle, I’m not quite there just yet. In all actuality, I was preparing for a party I hosted on November 2, 2004. The invitation read as follows:

All people and political parties are welcome to Election Night 2004!!! But, there is an agenda for the evening. If:
1. John Kerry wins, I will have champagne for all.
2. If Dubya wins, everyone will be required to drink 1 glass of Mad Dog 20/20.
3. If Nader wins, I will personally buy an all-inclusive round-trip package to Hawaii for everyone who comes to the party.
4. If, somehow, the Democrats win the election but the Republicans steal it AGAIN then we all will pile into our cars and make a break for Canada!
Hope you can make it!!!

As I’m sure you can assume, the champagne was decidedly easier and much more expensive to obtain for the festivities. Also, I didn’t exactly have American Airlines on hold with 20 round trip tickets to Hawaii in anticipation of the greatest political upset in the last 100 years.

As a reluctant Democrat, I spent the weeks preceding the election debating with my academic colleagues about who was going to win. With all the higher education Republicans being called into an undisclosed F.B.I. conservative protection program, these discussions were largely one-sided. The tenor is best characterized as having a measured optimism. Kerry was obviously intelligent; the fact that he “flip-flopped” on issues only proved he could in fact change his mind if given new evidence. And, of course, how could the character of a decorated Vietnam veteran ever be tarnished?

These discussions also provided ample opportunity for Bush-Bashing; I admit that I participated in these sessions with zeal! Now, our President Bush has never been seen as a flip-flopper. You either clearly knew his stance on an issue or you clearly knew he had no intention of taking any stance at all. I think Chris Rock summed it up best:

Reporter: Mr. President, What about the economy? When’s it going to pick up?

Bush: Well, you never know. We’re talking to people. And economic indicators are indicating that indications are coming to the indicators. You know what I’m saying? Alright.

Reporter: Mr. President, what about gay marriage?

Bush: F— them faggots!

November 2, 2004 finally rolled around. I was incredibly thankful that my near round the clock vigil of all the major media outlets would soon end; I hadn’t watched this much news coverage since the days following 9/11. At any rate, I ducked out of work, drove to my polling station and cast my ballot. Even up until the second I punched out my chad I was conflicted, but ultimately chose to follow my mind rather than my heart. I make this distinction because if I had voted for who my heart wanted, Nader would have been a single vote greater in Illinois. But, I bought into the hype that this election was just too important. As I said before, I am a reluctant Democrat.

The party that evening went well on its way and we watched the events unfold. Of course nothing surprising initially happened; states were falling where we all new they would. The northeast lit up blue, the south burned red. Like clockwork, within 5 seconds of the polls closing in Illinois it was awarded to the Democrats. I always take it as a matter of pride that my home state is the first blue beacon out to the west.

My partygoers continued to munch through all the hors d’oeuvres and make small talk since it would be at least a couple hours wait until we started receiving a few of the “toss-up” state election results. And then it came – Kerry was projected to win Pennsylvania. Not wanting to fall prey to another Florida fiasco, we quickly checked out all the news outlets for confirmation. All except Fox News (surprise, surprise) had the same wonderful blue color enveloping Pennsylvania; at that point a Kerry win felt much more tangible. The South cards all fell for Bush, as expected. Our numbers looked horrible, but we knew we could add on California’s 55 electoral votes to put us at ease. Until this point in the evening I was guarded in my optimism, but now I started to allow myself to believe. Maybe we wouldn’t have four more years of Bush.

The night rolled on and Florida fell as I expected but along came Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota in the win column for us. My eyes began to bore holes into Ohio on the TV map. I don’t think I moved from my position for sometime as I sat hoping for an answer.

I have never claimed to be a mathematician at any point in my life. Truth be told, in my first-year of college I was required to take a no-credit, remedial Algebra course. Nonetheless, on election night I found myself doing incredible calculations effortlessly in my head as I watched the returns come in from Ohio. It was still too close to call but Kerry was trailing. None of that mattered, each time I calculated the number of votes we needed I rationalized ways we were going to get them. After all, Democrats are lazy aren’t they? I had bet they were lounging around their houses all day, continually putting off going to the polls. I just knew they were watching T.V. like I was and suddenly realized “Oh damn! Look at those poll numbers. We had better go vote!”

Plus, we were heavily relying on the college vote. Having worked in colleges for many years now I’ve seen first hand just how adept students are at procrastinating. They probably were piling out of their residence halls right now and slowly trampsing over to the polls. Yeah, that must be it. I pinned my hopes of the election on the fact that lazy Democrats and procrastinating college students from Ohio were going to save the day.

With fear starting to creep in, some of my companions began speculating about what four more years of Bush really meant. The realization that we were going to lose continued to seep its way more and more into our psyche. Needless to say, neither the champagne nor Mad Dog was drunk that evening. And, my smart-aleck friend who brought with him a packed bag in hopes of a free Hawaiian vacation somberly went home. The night ended on the familiar note of a build up minus a pay off reminiscent of 2000. I struggled to stay awake into the night, but eventually fell asleep in my living room with the TV on.

Let me pause for one quick side bar. If elections are going to keep ending like a Hollywood cliffhanger, can we all decide to move them to Friday? On the Wednesdays following these sleepless nights I get absolutely nothing done between the frequent dosing off and even more frequent refreshing of every media outlet I have opened up on my desktop. Days like this I am addicted to these websites even though I can get a better idea about what will be on next week’s “24″ than I can about an election that already happened!

The early morning hours came without any news. I turned on the coffee pot, no news. I toasted my bagel, no news. I showered while occasionally craning my neck out of the bathroom to see the TV, no news. I was starting to get irritated.

Then came the Kerry concession speech; I knew it was coming, but just didn’t want to believe it. I wish I could say that he left me with some solace or hope in the future. I wish I felt united behind President Bush as the justified winner. But honestly, I cannot remember one word the man said during this speech. All I remember is thinking that maybe it was a good thing he didn’t get elected. I mean, for God’s sake, no President of the United States should ever be seen wearing a tie resembling something donated by the makers of Pepto-Bismol! Come on, you have to agree with me there!

Of course, this was just my humor consoling the incredible loss I felt in this moment. How could my calculations have been so off? Did the unreliable college students of Ohio sell our collective souls down the river because of a good drink special on campus? The parade of Bush parties all over the nation began to spring up and glow on my television screen. Bush was then able to give the triumphant reelection speech his father never could. As Bush supporters throughout the country were chanting enthusiastically “Four More Years” I sat down, put my head in my hands and muttered in a barely recognizable, guttural, pained effort of speech, “four…more…years.”

This article is not about what happened to the Democrats in losing this election. I merely tell my story of the election to one, set the stage for what we see in liberal America today and two, as a method of cathartic release for the emotions I still have bottled up. Looking back a year later, I can’t bring myself to hold Kerry solely responsible for this loss even though it seemed like a proverbial slam-dunk. What concerns me more is the attitude and rhetoric my fellow liberals have employed in the months since November. A year later I stand aghast at the senseless ramblings of individuals I thought to be patriots of this country. I believe in many of their virtues and ideals and thought I was standing shoulder to shoulder with them in a fight for what we believed in.

Unfortunately, many of my liberal co-patriots have gone off the bitter deep end. It is sad to witness the disgust, bordering on hate, many have expressed for those who dared cast their ballots for Bush. I even heard remarks after the Hurricane Katrina catastrophe that “those people down South” should blame themselves for President Bush’s slow response in their time of need. After all, they are the ones who voted for him. I find such a sentiment revolting. These are the people we hope to serve and yet we have shown so little respect for them in the wake of this election. If they do not “get” that we can serve them better than the Republican right, who’s fault is that?

In my junior year in high school, my entire class was unexpectedly called down to our large auditorium. Not knowing why we were being beckoned, we hastened downstairs knowing the reason could not be good news. A month or so prior we had all taken the Pre-ACT and evidentially our results had just been received.

My high school was supposed to be a rigorous college prep program and our combined Math scores were far below the national average. This is of course a foreshadowing to the future problems I would have in college requiring remedial coursework. In any case, the school administration had called us down to one, inform us of this fact and two, berate us for so horribly embarrassing the school by our poor performance. The principal spoke at us. The dean of students spoke at us. After about 10-15 more minutes of our own teachers criticizing our work ethic and performance to date I shot my hand into the air. I just couldn’t take it anymore.

When I was finally called on I could actually hear the hundreds of heads sweep back in my direction to see what I dared to say. While what I said next was most definitely rooted in a rebellious, adolescent, smart-aleck rebuke to the administration, it was nonetheless a moment of truth and relatable to our current political situation. I said, “Now, if I do poorly on a test, then that is my fault. But, if ALL 400 of us do poorly on a nationally administered test, isn’t that YOUR fault?” as I pointed my finger in the direction of the faculty.

As I am sure you can imagine, I got into an incredible amount of trouble for my outburst; but that does not mean that I was wrong! If Red-Staters who have lost their jobs, are having their daughters and sons die in the Middle East and are suffering through a horrendous federal response to a natural disaster are still voting for the man and political party responsible for their plight, how can we place blame for the election at their doorstep? We evidentially did an outright horrible job at teaching and explaining how we want to work on behalf of these honest, hard-working people occupying the land between Los Angeles and New York City. We did not show them how we have their true interest at heart and not just interests of the richest 1%. It isn’t their fault and there is nothing fundamentally wrong with them. The problem lies within our nation of real-life, working liberals.

I absolutely refuse to align myself with rhetoric of dejection, mistrust, and constant bemoaning of how we have been cheated. I have some news for all my fellow liberals out there…WE WEREN’T CHEATED! But, even if we were cheated, we cheated ourselves. I can’t believe that some of the most highly educated and respectable people in our nation are such incredibly sore losers. We aren’t on the playground anymore folks and there will be another day for another election. I have no confidence in President Bush either, but I do have confidence in us as a people. Besides, if Kerry was elected, we have to be honest, we were only hoping for a slightly less screwed up world than we already have. A messiah sent to heal the wounds in our country he was not.

We liberals here on the ground floor, living real lives, will not have success just happen to us. We have to create our own fortune. The Democrats may be the best we have and, unfortunately for us, the only thing they have successfully created is an ocean of failure. Just take a quick look at the results for the past 10 elections:

                        1968 – Richard M. Nixon (R)

                        1972 – Richard M. Nixon/Gerald R. Ford (R)

                        1976 – James E. Carter (D)

                        1980 – Ronald W. Reagan (R)

                        1984 – Ronald W. Reagan (R)

                        1988 – George H. W. Bush (R)

                        1992 – William J. Clinton (D)

                        1996 – William J. Clinton (D)

                        2000 – George W. Bush (R)

                        2004 – George W. Bush (R)

Are you able to see the problem? We have elected 2 Democrats to our nations highest office in the past 36 years and one of those was JIMMY CARTER! There are problems that pre-date the “Dubya” era of our history. We have to take a critical look into how this history and the Democratic Party has affected the nation of liberals of which I am proud to be a part. Proud yes, but not satisfied. We can be better than we have shown ourselves to be this past year.

One, we are not going to win allies by calling people stupid. It is just that simple. Liberals are quick to chastise President Bush for pushing around the world like he is Clint Eastwood in some Western. He is not well liked around the world because he is a bully and thinks he knows what is right; let’s not make the same mistake. Let’s not assume we naturally know what a family living in Stillwater, Oklahoma wants or needs. We may share in a collective American culture, but our individual experiences are far removed from one another.

Two, we are not going to win allies by looking down our noses at people. Do you remember the stuck up professors you had in college who thought they were God’s gift to the world? Did you like them? Of course not! Pretentious academics end their life in the solitude believing that they were always better than everyone else. Notice closely that I said their story ends in solitude. An important point here is that solitude doesn’t carry much voting power.

Three, we are not going to win allies by telling people how easy it would be to improve their situation. First off, I have rarely met a person whose situation was easy to begin with. Everyone has a story about the hardest thing they have ever had to deal with in their lives. To them it was difficult and, even if another’s experience was different, no one has the right to pass a value judgment. Everyone’s story deserves respect.

Many Red-Staters like their “situation” and don’t need people filling their head with the idea that there is something wrong with them. We have fought and are still fighting hard battles for equal opportunity. This means all people have the equal opportunity to lead any kind of life they want. I too get annoyed when NASCAR clogs up my nightly ESPN time, but being a fan of NASCAR does not infer that you also possess a lower I.Q. Again, I say we have constantly fought for the choice. Why would we begrudge anyone that?

We should learn from and show respect to the Republican Party and Red-Staters. They are ardent Americans and a large section of the population we hope to serve. Furthermore, when the Republicans took a presidential back seat in the 1990s, never once did I hear that they wanted to flee to Canada as I heard loudly exclaimed from many liberals this past year. I point the finger right back myself in this instance in reference to my Election Night invitation. How more un-American and juvenile can a person sound by saying that since I didn’t get my way I’m taking my ball and going home. If the Left is going to flee the country because the current King of the Right is still in office, I have to respect Republicans even more for deciding to continue the fight and not just BLOW town when Clinton held the same JOB. Remember, the Right was exactly too ecstatic when we had our president in the 90s.

Special Note: For those of you who want to move to Canada over election results my first instinctual response is to help you pack. We don’t need you here; you’re nothing but a pessimistic weight holding us down. But, if you really are willing to move over this, then could you at least take one for the team and move to Ohio? We need some more blue voters there.

The point is that I have not seen my peers leading with respect this past year and I call upon them to do so. I don’t care about the politicians; they are going to do what they are going to do. I say again that I am talking to the real world, working liberals where the true charge for change falls. We are better than this and only by being better are we going to reclaim positions of power in politics. It is 3 more years until the next election and I am guessing it is at least 8-12 more years before Barrack Obama can run. We need answers and leaders today. Get your game face on liberals!

Postpartum depression, or peripartum depresion occurs after a woman gives birth. Within a few hours of giving birth the amount of the two female hormones, estrogen and progesterone, return to their pre pregnancy levels. Many researchers feel that this drop in hormone levels, much like the smaller changes in hormone levels can affect a womans mood just before her menstrual cycle, is one of the causes of postpartum depression.

In some women the levels of thyroid hormones decrease as well. This decrease in these hormones can lead to symptoms of depression too. Some of these symptoms include a depressed mood, a loss of interest in daily things, problems sleeping and fatigue, irritability and weight gain.

Another factor that can lead to postpartum depression is genetics. This type of depression can be passed down from mother to daughter. There is also a correlation between postpartum depression and women who suffer from severe premenstrual syndrome.

Postpartum depsression is also known as the baby blues and one in ten new mothers suffer from this to one degree or another. In addition to the drastic changes in hormone levels, the presence of a new baby in the house is also a major factor in postpartum depression. A new baby can be a major stress on a new mom and this can factor into becoming depressed. Some of these factors include:

Having less free time then before the baby was born and an inability to control the time needed to get things done. The baby demands all the mothers attention, leaving little time for herself.

Going through labor is extremely stressful and tiring for a new mom. A new mom does not have time to regain her strength post delivery because of the demands and needs of the new baby. Just getting a good nights sleep is nearly impossible with late night feedings and diaper changes.

Many new mothers question their own ability to be a good mom. They become overwhelmed with the care the new baby needs and start to worry that they aren’t providing the care their baby needs.

For new moms, postpartum depression can occur with a feeling that they are no longer who they used to be. Their old schedule and ways of doing things have been replaced by the needs of their new baby. They can also feel like they have to do it all and try to take care of the new baby while doing all the things they used to do. This can be very overwhelming because chances are the care of the new baby will not allow them to accomplish all that they think they should.

New moms can also become disconnected from their partner and family. They find that their time is limited and they just don’t have time to spend with the rest of their family.

For most women the “baby blues” will usually go away as their hormone levels get back to normal. But for some women the depression associated with a new baby does not go away and can steadily get worse. It is very important that women who experince any kind of depression after child birth talk to their doctor right away. Most cases of postpartum depression can be dealt with with medication and some counseling.

The worst thing to do is to hold out for the big break that never happens: Better to play for the love of music. With no false hopes and no illusions, start from zero. Somewhere, there’s an audience for you. Let someone hear you – mother, daughter, friend, lover – and listen to what they have to say. Drink in the encouragement and consider their criticism. It’s all good. Just get someone, anyone, anywhere, anytime to listen to you. Sing in the dark, sing in the park. Play for friends, for strangers, for young and for old.

All you need is a song and a crowd; the rest comes easy, one step at a time. The day will come when you’ll earn a place of respect. People will notice when you walk into a room. You won’t hear a pin drop when you begin to play at a local coffee house. The whole room will “rock” when you plug in and play at your neighborhood blues cafe.

But, if that’s not enough and you still want to get signed to a major record. Pet your dog. Kiss your wife or girlfriend goodbye. You’ll be away for a long, long time playing for people you don’t know in places you’ve never been before. Your chances of becoming a rock star are about as good as winning a lottery. Call it a glass ceiling. Call it a brick wall, mainstream success is rare.

They say the Beatles started their career playing in strip joints in Hamburg, Germany. Forty years ago, Hamburg’s infamous red-light district was where some of the world’s most popular rock musicians paid their dues. One day Brian Epstein discovered the Beatles when they packed the Star Club with whores, pimps, transvestites, sailors and fans of “beat music” swilling alcohol and dancing until dawn. Epstein saw something in them that no one else could see. Somehow he knew one day their raw sound would thrill audiences with a magic that will never return again.

Maybe someone will notice you one day. All you’ve got to is get the right people interested in what you’re doing and hold that interest long enough for them to “buy” what you’re doing. The more interested they are, the longer they stick around, the more ideas they’ll get for selling what you have to offer.

‘The cream always rises to the top’ doesn’t mean the best rise to the top. Without at least some marketing savvy, the average musician won’t make it very far alone no matter how good he is. Which brings me to my next thought. A performing career isn’t for most people. Most so-called pro musicians live below the poverty line spending their daylight hours watching TV in a dingey downtown apartment waiting for the phone to ring with a booking for your next paying gig. When you’re a seventeen year-old drop out, playing bar songs for a crowd of rowdy drunks might be someone’s idea of a good time but there are better ways to make a living.

If you want a life, think again. With a strong regional presence, it’s possible to make a name for yourself as an artist. If you travel a circuit, and stay around long enough your audience will grow and your CD sales will climb. If you’re good, you might become a cult hero or even a regional icon

This article emphasizes the preventative steps that you can take to avoid the onset of high blood pressure.

A high blood pressure remedy is something that is used to help prevent high blood pressure from occurring in the first place or else to help control blood pressure levels.

The high blood pressure remedy most doctors recommend is one that anyone can put into play so long as they have patience, perseverance and a healthy dose of self-control. This means making lifestyle changes that can improve the functioning of your circulatory system and get you into better shape physically

Often lifestyle changes also have a positive impact on psychological health as well because healthy people feel better and are more able to deal with the ups and downs of life.

The first high blood pressure remedy is the foods you eat. Always try to follow as closely as possible a heart healthy diet that can greatly lower your potential for developing any kind of circulatory problem

Some suggestions for this high blood pressure remedy include limiting the amount of trans fat and hydrogenated oils you consume daily in items such as fried foods, margarines and foods purchased from fast food restaurants as well as limiting the amount of refined sugar you eat in foods such as cookies, cakes, doughnuts, candy, et cetera

Other suggestions include using both garlic as well as olive oil (extra virgin is the best) when you cook to lower your cholesterol levels and adding omega-3 fatty acids to your daily diet as much as possible. The very best sources of omega-3 are fish oil or cold water fish such as salmon, tuna and mackerel.

Another high blood pressure remedy is exercise. Make it a goal of yours to get exercise on a regular basis. Get off the couch, put your sneakers on and get out there and get as much physical activity as possible. It is recommended that you at least three to four times during the week (and more if you can) for an average of 30 minutes at a time. Try to do stretching exercises before and cool down exercises after your run or work out.

If you are new to exercise, please do not overdo it. Start off slowly and work up to more as time goes by. Keep in mind that you do not have to go to the gym all of the time to get the required exercise your body needs to keep blood pressure at a normal level. Go for walks around your neighborhood, walk the dog in the park, go for a run around the block, play a game of tennis, throw a ball around the yard with your son or daughter once a week, and so one. Try to vary the activities you do as much as possible so you do not get bored and abandon them. Also remember that drinking plenty of water when you are exercising and stopping for breaks is imperative.
