Every parent who has a troubled teen is in real pain. They watch their son or daughter suffering from drug addiction or depression or rebellion or some other destructive teen problem. Parents want to help their teen and they can as fortunately help is available. In many cases that help is provided by sending the child away to a residential facility.
This in itself can be stressing for all concerned. The troubled teen may not believe they are in trouble and refuse or be reluctant to go. The parent may be alarmed at losing their ‘baby’ even if he or she is a teenager. But the fact is that hundreds of thousands of troubled teens have gone to a residential treatment center and returned fitter, healthier and, in short, cured.
So if you are considering sending your teen to such a residential facility, what should you be looking for? Well the answer is in three parts – academic success, sporting prowess and mental good health. Each of these facts is important in itself but all three are relevant in helping any troubled teen overcome their problems and make a good clean start.
Life goes on and your troubled teen of today is going to enter the workforce in the near future and you want them to have as many opportunities as possible. So look for a school which continues to provide strong academic tuition with the goal of college entrance and specific job skills.
In many places, because your child is in residence, there will be structured homework or extra study sessions which are supervised. Chances are your teen will lift their game academically and make strong gains in this field.
Then there are sports. Even those teens that are not sports-minded can benefit from such things as outdoor education in the form of hiking, climbing and water sports. It doesn’t have to be football or tennis. By getting lost of healthy exercise, the teen will need a proper and balanced diet to supply the energy for their physical activities. This is doubly good for those teens that may have an eating disorder or lack a proper diet.
Finally there is the fact of a healthy mind. Some young people suffer from depression and low self-esteem. This is where the trained therapists on staff work with the troubled teens and help them make better choices. Their self-confidence gets a boost and they are equipped to tackle problems. They do not fall back into self-pity even self-loathing. Rather they form a strong and healthy opinion of their body and who they are.
Of course being in trouble is a worry and things can get worse. But the other side of the coin tells us there is help available and it is a total package. Not only is your troubled teen brought out of their problem but there are given skills and strategies to ensure they avoid trouble in the future. They can turn around their life and these gains can continue through life.
