How can my daughter protect herself against her drug addicted husband?

  • Posted on August 2, 2010 at 10:19 am

My daughter is caught up in a situation with her husband that is a really bad one. She works an excellent job and has a good position in her own office. She married a man that was a good guy but has turned to crack cocaine. They have two precious little baby girls in the house. One is six months old and one is four years old. There are two other children from her former marriage.
Her husband disappears for three or four days to do his crack and calls her when he runs out of money and comes home and says she cannot throw him out because it is his house too. She says when he comes in he is coming down from the drug. She has called the police and they say they can’t make him leave because it indeed his home too.
Does anyone know what her rights are on this issue. She is ready to file papers, but in the mean time, she wants him out.
Has anyone experienced such a thing and what can she do? Thanks

Sins Against God

  • Posted on January 20, 2010 at 4:06 pm

Jesus and his apostles explicitly warn us about the sins of blasphemy, disloyalty, disobedience, idolatry, materialism, oaths, swearing, sorcery, and witchcraft. Should we ignore their advice? or listen to what they have to say?

Aren’t all sins against God? Yes, but some are more direct than others. Here’s one way of looking at it: Imagine a sailor at sea. He could destroy himself by debauchery, drunkenness, idleness, or sexual immorality. These are sins of the flesh.

Likewise, he could destroy himself with anger, bitterness, arrogance, cowardice, envy, folly, hatred, hypocrisy, jealousy, lust, pride, selfish ambition, or worry. These are sins of the mind or spirit.

Then too, he could create havoc among his shipmates. He could physically abuse them by murder, revenge, theft, extortion, or swindling. Or the sailor could stir up trouble for his mates by bragging, lying, gossiping, quarreling, or slandering. Again, the sailor could provoke others into wrongdoing or encourage others to join him in mischief.

What we have said so far is that the sailor is capable of abusing both himself and his shipmates. But another type of wrong is possible. The seaman could offend the captain of the ship. He could be disloyal; he could be disobedient; he could mutiny. By the same token, we can sin directly against God through blasphemy, disloyalty, disobedience, idolatry, materialism, oaths and swearing, and sorcery and witchcraft.

Blasphemy

Blasphemy means impious, untrue, or profane speaking against God. In Mark, Jesus says: “Whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of an eternal sin.” (Mark 3:29) Mark goes on to explain the circumstances: He said this because they were saying, “He has an evil spirit.” (Mark 3:30) Matthew and Luke also carry versions of this statement. (Matthew 12:32) (Luke 12:10)

Apparently, the unpardonable sin is attributing evil to the Holy Spirit.

Peter spoke of those who “blaspheme in matters they do not understand.” (2 Peter 2:12) He compares them to wild beasts who will be destroyed. Paul expressed a desire to teach Hymenaeus and Alexander not to blaspheme. (1 Timothy 1:20)

Disloyalty

Disloyalty is another sin which God will not tolerate.

Jesus: “Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.” (Matthew 10:37)

Jesus: “If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.” (Mark 8:38) (Luke 9:26)

Jesus: “Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.” (John 15:4)

We must remain faithful to Christ. In fact, he must be number one in our lives. He won’t settle for any other spot.

Disobedience

Jesus and Paul both caution us against disobedience.

Jesus: “He who does not love me will not obey my teachings.” (John 14:24)

Paul: Let no one deceive you with shallow arguments. God’s wrath falls on the disobedient. Have nothing to do with them. (Ephesians 5:6-7 REB)

Idolatry

Idolatry has two meanings: one is the worship of idols, the other excessive admiration or blind infatuation with anybody or anything. Personally, I don’t know of anyone who is tempted to worship an idol. On the the other hand, I know plenty of wildly enthusiastic devotees to, well, you name it – music, sports, games, work, exercise, health foods, grandchildren – practically anything you can think of.

These days common sense and moderation seem to be out the window and fanaticism in. But those who want to follow Christ must keep their perspective. Our favorite rock band, basketball team, or committee to save the environment does not hold eternity in their hands. Christ does. Our priorities ought to reflect that fact. Christ first, everything else after.

Here are our warnings against idolatry:

Paul: “Idolaters will not inherit the kingdom of God.” (Ephesians 5:5)

Paul: “Do not be idolaters, as some of [our forefathers] were; as it is written: ‘The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in pagan revelry.’” (1 Corinthians 10:7)

Paul: “Flee from idolatry.” (1 Corinthians 10:14)

Paul: Put to death idolatry. That belongs to your earthly nature. Because of sins such as this, God’s wrath is coming. (Colossians 3:5-6)

Jesus: But the idolaters – their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death. (Revelation 21:8)

Materialism

This is another area where our society is at odds with a fundamental precept of Christianity. The advantages of having money are so obvious. Let’s be candid, if we were given a choice between living as a millionaire or as a pauper, which would we choose?

In this highly materialistic environment we run headlong into Jesus’ explicit warning: “No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.” (Matthew 6:24)

He couldn’t put it any plainer than that. We have a choice to make.

Paul adds his own commentary on materialism: “Many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is on earthly things.” (Philippians 3:18-19)

Again Paul: “People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.” (1 Timothy 6:9-10)

And Paul offers this advice to the wealthy: The wealthy should not be proud. Their riches are uncertain, they should place their hope in God, be rich in good deeds, ready to give generously and share with others. (1 Timothy 6:17-18)

We brought nothing into this world; we will take nothing out of it. Whatever wealth we have is merely on loan, and that for a short period of time. Materialism, we discover is too simple; it is a philosophy for children.

Oaths

Jesus says don’t make them. A plain “Yes” or “No” is all you need to say. Anything beyond that comes from the evil one. (Matthew 5:36-37)

James repeats Christ’s warning: “Above all, my brothers, do not swear-not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. Let your ‘Yes’ be yes, and your ‘No,’ no, or you will be condemned.” (James 5:12)

Magic Arts

Magic arts include: fortunetellers, mediums, spiritualists, witches, and wizards. Jesus condemned them all. Those who practice magic arts – their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death. (Revelation 21:8)

Today many dismiss fortunetellers, palm readers, witchcraft, and mediums as so much superstitious nonsense. No doubt, fraud and superstition are part of what we call “magic arts.” But Paul believed there is more to it than that. In his words: “Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” (Ephesians 6:12)

He also predicts: “In later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons.” (1 Timothy 4:1)

Jesus, Paul, and the book of Leviticus (See: Leviticus 19:31, Leviticus 20:6, and Leviticus 20:27) all tell us that supernatural powers other than God do indeed exist. All three warn us to stay away from those powers. Don’t practice them. Don’t consult them. Don’t follow them.

Conclusion

Say you were in court on a civil suit. Do you think it might be a good idea to do something to intentionally antagonize the judge? No? Then why do anything to annoy the Eternal Judge? Don’t blaspheme him; don’t disobey him, don’t put anybody or anything before him; don’t swear oaths; and don’t practice or consult with any type of magic arts.

God demands our obedience. We should give it. Considering our position, it’s the only reasonable thing to do.

At a dinner party, I overheard a young lady say: “Well, I for one, don’t want to be perfect. I think everyone needs a flaw or two of some sort.”

It sounded very chic, and a couple of people were quick to agree, adding their own favorite “flaws” to the conversation. Jesus, of course, did not agree. He told us to be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect. (Matthew 5:48)

But Paul tells us: “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23)

James echoes the same thought: “We all stumble in many ways.” (James 3:2)

John goes so far as to say, “If we claim we have not sinned, we make [Jesus] out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.” (1 John 1:10)

So what is Jesus talking about when he says: “Be perfect”? Surely he means we should aim at perfection. We know we will never achieve it on our own, but that should be our goal.

That is how Paul interprets it. He tells us perfection is his own goal, and we are to follow his example. Paul says he has not yet reached perfection, but he is pressing on toward that goal to win the prize for which God has called him. The prize he speaks of is heaven and that through Jesus Christ. Follow my example; he says, our citizenship is in heaven. (Philippians 3:12-17)

And Paul advises the Corinthians: “Aim for perfection, listen to my appeal, be of one mind, live in peace.” (2 Corinthians 13:11)

Some claim “perfection” is an unrealistic goal. It can only lead to frustration and failure; therefore, we should lower our expectations and be satisfied with “pretty good.” The problem with that is: We never do better than our mark. Those who aim at “pretty good” usually don’t even achieve that much.

Picture in your mind two Olympic runners. The first runner dedicates himself to setting a new speed record for the five hundred meter dash. The second runner’s goal is not to embarrass himself by coming in dead last. Which do you think is likely to do better?

Christ told us to: “Be perfect.” Some aim for perfection; others try to behave decently so long as they are in a good mood. Which do you think is more likely to please Christ?

Returning to the young lady at the dinner party, I happen to know she owns a car. Can you imagine her saying: “I for one, don’t want a perfect automobile. I think every car needs a flaw or two of some sort.”

Oh, what type of flaw would she like to see in her own car? Faulty brakes? Faulty clutch? Faulty steering? Flat tires? Broken headlights? The young lady would be quick to tell you that is an entirely different matter. She would like for her car to function properly.

God made us. He wants us to function properly too. For that reason Jesus and his apostles gave us certain principles to live by: charity, courage, faith, humility, justice, knowledge and wisdom, obedience, perseverance and faithfulness, prudence, and temperance. Notice Christ did not tell us to pick and choose which one we want. He tells us to practice all these virtues. They are to become the backbone of our character. That is what it takes for a human to function properly.

What of faults? What of sins and vices? Can you name one which would improve your own character? How about anger? lust? theft? gossiping? lying? No? Certainly not! None of them would help a human to function anymore than a flat tire would help an automobile to function. Isn’t it clear? God knows what makes us tick. He issued those commands for our own good.

Question to Consider:

Christ told us to aim for perfection. Can you think of a better goal?

“Aim at heaven and you will get earth thrown in. Aim at earth and you get neither.” C. S. [Clive Staples] Lewis (1898-1963)

U.s. is not Dealing With Mexican Violence Against Americans

  • Posted on January 4, 2010 at 8:28 pm

BY MICHAEL WEBSTER: Syndicated Investigative Reporter: Mon Jan 12, 2009 at 12:01 AM PST

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said this week if Mexico’s vicious drug war ever spills into the United States they have several response plans, one of which calls for a military surge along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Secretary Chertoff there have already been many so called “spill over’s” into the U.S. with little or no response from the Bush administration. Many believe it is do to the cozy relationship between the two governments.

From Brownsville Texas to San Diego California Mexican cities bordering American cities are where most Americans are being killed by assassinations and executions. But other Americans are being killed by the long arm of the Mexican drug cartels which reach deep into America. There are accounts of Mexican drug cartel surrogate terrorist’s invading the U.S. by crossing the porous international border and killing Americans in Dallas Texas, Atlanta Geo, New York City, Phoenix Ariz, Las Vegas Nevada, and is believed to have reached Shelby County Alabama where five people were found murdered gangland style by Mexican nationals.

Many Americans were kidnapped in the U.S. and taken to Mexico where they were murdered. Still other Americans were abducted and slain in Mexico while visiting, others where shot gangland style in country. Dozens of U.S. citizens have been kidnapped, or held hostage, or killed by their captors in Mexico and many cases remain unsolved. Moreover, new cases of disappearances and kidnap-for-ransom and Americans being killed continue to be reported. On top of that there have been dozens of incursions by the Mexican military into the states. Also all along our borders with Mexico American authorities have been attacked by the Mexican military and by those believed to be well trained Mexican drug cartel surrogate terrorist using military style Humvee’s, rocket lounges, assault rifles, grenades, 50 cal mounted weapons and other hard core military weaponry. To date there is no evidence that the U.S. Government has done anything to curtail these attacks.

Carey Marcella McClintock was threatening to testify against a prominent and well known El Paso criminal defense lawyer who has represented Mexican and American drug traffickers and that he himself was beholding to the drug cartels and their gang members.

Carey’s father has been independently investigating his daughter’s killing and now believes that Carey was taken from a Texas town near Dallas to Juarez Mexico across the border from El Paso Texas on a ruse, and was brutally murdered on August 31, 2008 in Juarez so she could not testify.  She was found in an abandoned house in the desert minutes outside of the city.  She had been beaten and stabbed multiple times. Carey’s father believes that his daughter was about to testify against the attorney and others in a federal and on going investigation involving the Mexican drug cartel and there hired assailants the El Paso’s Barrio Azteca Gang  One Of The Most Dangerous In Nation. “I believe she was coerced into going to El Paso by the attorney and the attorney’s girl friend where she was provided transportation and was put up in a hotel in Juarez and all paid for by the same attorney. Her family fears that what really happened to Carey has happened to others and that her murder and others like hers will never see the light of day and will never be solved by the corrupt Mexican authorities. He also says the American authorities refuse to investigate because they claim the crime was in Mexico. The El Paso Police Dept has been informed as to the details surrounding the case where the local attorney illegally transported and harbored a known fugitive, yet no investigation is underway. The father also thinks the same attorney had something to do with his daughter’s murder.

In spite of all that, Chertoff claims he has instructed the 22 federal agencies that fall under his preview to develop border-violence response plans because the drug war in Mexico appears to be escalating, not ending. So far, more than 5,300 people have been killed across Mexico as the result of the on going civil war between the Mexican Government and the powerful Mexican drug cartels.

“We completed a contingency plan for border violence, so if we did get a significant spillover, we have a surge if I may use that word — capability to bring in not only our own assets but even to work with” the Defense Department, Chertoff told the New York Times.
He did not give details on how, when or where the military might be used.

According to the El Paso Times Jason Ciliberti, a spokesman for U.S. Customs and Border Protection, which is one of the federal agencies under the Homeland Security department, confirmed the contingency plans. He said federal agencies have had border-violence response plans for several months now.
“We need them so customs and Border Patrol can continue daily operations,” Ciliberti said from his Washington, D.C., office. “The other reason the plans exist is because these agencies, which are all a part of Homeland Security, must provide U.S. citizens with a safe place to live. If the violence threatens the daily safety and daily routine of U.S. citizens, Homeland Security must be ready.”

Many Americans believe that the crimes against Americans such as kidnappings and murders by invading forces like the cartels are being ignored by the American government and many local law enforcement officials are turning a blind eye on the violence accruing on American soil or just are not properly informed.

An example of this attitude or lack of knowledge is found in a recent statement by the acting El Paso Police Chief Greg Allen where he said that he did not think a military buildup would ever be needed. He went on to say “It would have to be an end-of-the-world type situation before the military is brought in. “We all pretty much feel like the violence is going to be contained in Mexico. Our concern is minimal.”

These statements are coming from our so called first line defense law enforcement officials along our border with Mexico. Luna County (N.M.) Sheriff Raymond Cobos, whose territory encompasses Deming and the Columbus port of entry a section known for drug and human smuggling, said the drug cartels are very much aware of the firepower U.S. law enforcement agencies and the military have.

“I think they look across the border and see a lot of U.S. law enforcement ready to respond,” Cobos said. “Since the violence started, we have treated every incident as a potential border violence incident. But so far, nothing has spilled over.”Cobos told the media recently.

Ciliberti said the contingency plans vary, but for the most part, if the violence in Mexico spills into the U.S., the first Homeland Security plan calls for increasing the number of Border Patrol agents in the region. Chertoff said that nationally, an additional 19,000 agents will be deployed this year.

The Homeland Security plan also calls for the partnering of federal agents with local and state police officers to help patrol any areas where border violence is occurring.

“As a last resort, it would include the military,” Ciliberti said.

The EL Paso Times reports that Paul Boyce, a spokesman with U.S. Army public affairs office in the Pentagon, said all of the U.S. armed forces, including the Army are a part of U.S. emergency contingency plans. He said the military is ready to help any city, state or region in any type of emergency.

“For security reasons, we do not get into the details or say what our role would be,” Boyce said.

Cobos said that if the violence did reach across the border, local law enforcement agencies up and down the border would be able to respond appropriately.

“But if for some reason that didn’t work,” he said, “then we would call on Chertoff’s contingency plans.”

In a recent article the times reported that U.S. Rep. Silvestre Reyes, D-Texas, said the fact that the federal government has a contingency plan for border violence should be put in perspective. The federal government historically has had plans for any type of national emergency.

“As the violence in Mexico escalated last year, the Department of Homeland Security updated these plans to ensure that our federal law enforcement agencies are adequately prepared to meet any type of emergency that could arise should the violence in Mexico threaten the security of the United States,” Reyes said.

“The use of military forces would be a last resort because our federal law enforcement agencies are fully prepared to respond to most emergency scenarios, that is the whole purpose behind these contingency plans.”

Still, El Paso County Commissioner Dan Haggerty said the news that the U.S. has various levels of contingency plans to deal with the violence should be comforting to most El Pasoans.

“I think it is going to get worse in Mexico, and we as U.S. citizens need to be assured that Homeland Security or someone is going to protect us,” he said. “We must accept that we live in a city that has been labeled as a major drug-smuggling corridor and a place for illegal immigration.

“With that type of illegal activity comes the possibility that our safety is at risk.”

Estimates indicated in Iraq during the height of that bloody war there were never more than 10,000 hard core Al-Qaeda fighters in country. It is estimated that in the Americas there are already thousands of Al-Qaeda, and other Muslim extremist groups operating. In Mexico it is estimated that there could be tens of thousands of Mexican drug cartel members, enforcement gangs and other sympathizers. Iraq is a country of only 25 million people, Mexico is a country of well over 100 million people and it is in our back yard. It has taken over 350,000 American troops and thousands of troops of our allies and well over a trillion American dollars to combat and contain Iraq’s civil war. More people were killed violently in Mexico last year than in Iraq and Afghanistan combined. It is time that America wakes up and faces the fact that a major civil war is taking place in Mexico and it is spilling over into the streets of America and will likely get much worse long before it gets better and is likely to kill even more Americans.

Does M.A.D.D. (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) protest at funerals?

  • Posted on January 2, 2010 at 10:06 am

My friend’s mother insisted they were going to protest at her daughter’s funeral. The daughter drove drunk and now the cousins want to take action to make sure people do not make the choice to drive drunk. However, they’re not sure if they should get involved with M.A.D.D. activities because of the “rumor.” Help?

Mother Against Drunk Driving(madd): is it Neo-prohibitionist?

  • Posted on January 1, 2010 at 7:06 pm

“Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) was founded in 1980 by Candy Lightner, whose daughter was tragically killed by a drunk driver who was a repeat offender. The goal of MADD was to reduce drunk driving traffic fatalities and the organization has been highly effective in raising public disapproval of drunk driving. The proportion of traffic fatalities that are alcohol-related has dropped dramatically, in part because of MADD’s good efforts. MADD is a single-issue non-profit anti-drunk driving organization in the United States and with a branch in Canada (see MADD Canada). MADD is based in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex suburb of Irving, Texas.

MADD’s Goal: Is it Neo-Prohibitionist?

Mothers Against Drunk Driving stigmatizes light or moderate alcohol consumption, even when it isn’t associated with either being underage or driving. For example:

1. MADD sells a graphic showing two empty glasses of alcohol surrounded by the words assault, drowning, burns, rape and suicide.

2. MADD sells a graphic that equates beer with heroin by depicting a beer bottle as a drug syringe.

3. MADD sells a television ad insisting that “”if you think there’s a difference”" between heroin and alcohol, “”you’re dead wrong.”"

Mothers Against Drunk Driving has clearly become not simply anti-drunk driving or even anti-impaired driving, but anti-alcohol. MADD’s temperance orientation expresses itself in many ways, as seen in Is MADD Neo-Prohibitionist?

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) began with the admirable goal of reducing drunk driving traffic fatalities by educating the nation about the devastation caused by drunk drivers. For the first 15 years, this strategy paid off: MADD’s public relations campaigns played a key role in changing the nation’s attitude about drunk driving, resulting in a huge drop-off in drunk driving deaths. MADD was so successful that it reached its goal for 2000 (to reduce alcohol-related deaths by 20%) in 1997.

MADD’s campaign to make adult beverages more expensive through drastically increased taxes is another major tactic in their war on responsible drinking. MADD says these tax hikes are a way to reduce underage drinking — but lacks real evidence that taxes are more likely to reduce underage drinking than moderate consumption by responsible adults.

MADD founder Candy Lightner has broken ties with the group. In 2002, she told the Washington Times, “[MADD] has become far more neo-prohibitionist than I had ever wanted or envisioned … I didn’t start MADD to deal with alcohol. I started MADD to deal with the issue of drunk driving.”

In the 1980s, MADD had success in helping change public attitudes and laws regarding driving under the influence (DUI). Since 1980 (the year Mothers Against Drunk Driving was founded), alcohol-related traffic fatalities have decreased by about 44 percent, from over 30,000 to under 17,000 and MADD has helped save over 300,000 lives.
