A Couple Of Factors That Can Cause Insomnia

  • Posted on July 2, 2009 at 7:15 am

While there is no one cut and dried reason why some people can’t sleep, most experts agree that insomnia is brought on by stress, anxiety, medications, and/or caffeine – among other things. Transient and short-term insomnia has many causes.
A reaction to change or stress is one of the most common causes of short-term and transient insomnia. This condition is sometimes referred to as adjustment sleep disorder.

The precipitating factor could be a major or traumatic event such as the following:

• An acute illness.

• Injury or surgery.

• The loss of a loved one.

• Job loss.

Temporary insomnia could also develop after a relatively minor event, including the following:

• Extremes in weather.

• An exam at school.

• Traveling.

• Trouble at work.

In such cases, normal sleep almost always returns when the condition resolves, the individual recovers from the event, or the person becomes acclimated to the new situation. Treatment is needed if sleepiness interferes with functioning or if it continues for more than a few weeks.

Fluctuations in female hormones play a major role in insomnia in women over their lifetimes. Such insomnia is most often temporary.

The hormone progesterone promotes sleep. Levels of this hormone plunge during menstruation, causing insomnia. When they rise during ovulation, women may become sleepier than usual.

During Pregnancy, the effects of changes in progesterone levels in the first and last trimester can disrupt normal sleep patterns.

Insomnia can be a major problem in the first phases of menopause, when hormones are fluctuating intensely. Insomnia during this period may be due to different factors that occur.

In some women, hot flashes, sweating, and a sense of anxiety can awaken women suddenly and frequently at night during the first months of menopause. In such women, hormone replacement therapy may be beneficial.

Insomnia may also be perpetuated by psychological distress provoked by this life passage. In most cases, insomnia is temporary. Cases of chronic insomnia in women after 50 are more likely to be due to other causes

In one study, 20% of adults reported that light, noise, and uncomfortable temperatures caused their sleeplessness. Depending on the time of day too much or too little light can disrupt sleep. It is well known that a person’s biologic circadian clock is triggered by sunlight and very bright artificial light to maintain wakefulness. One study indicated that even dim artificial light may disrupt sleep.

Insufficient exposure to light during the day, as occurs in some disabled elderly patients who rarely venture outside, may also be linked with sleep disturbances. One study suggests that when a person is exposed to bright daylight, melatonin levels increases in response to darkness at night, which aids sleep.

3 Secrets To A Stress Free Existence

  • Posted on July 1, 2009 at 9:04 pm

Many of us are stressed beyond belief, but we can’t figure out why. And, looking at the retail sales of anxiety medications and over the counter drugs, we’re living in one of the most stress filled times in human history. It could be the fear that we’re losing our retirement money in the tanking stock market. Or possibly it’s the fact that one fifth of the job force where we work has been let go and we think there’s a good chance that we might be next. Or maybe it’s just wondering how we can possibly ignore the negative influences all around us and raise our children in a moral environment. These things, and more, are slowly starting to wear us down and fray our nerves to the point where we are desperately looking for solutions to take some of the stress out of our lives.

A primary cause for people being so stressed is the feeling that they have somehow lost control over the important things in their lives. To obtain or regain that control, there are three primary things that you have to have in your life – money, health, and security. It’s easy to be relaxed and stress free when you’re in control. When you have these three things – you’re in control, and relaxed.

Money – it’s no secret that money is the grease that makes modern society work. With enough money, you’re able to move your family to a respectable neighborhood, and not have to worry about crime or security. With enough money, you don’t have to worry about health care. You’ll have a nice health insurance policy, go to the best doctors, and generally have access to the best possible health care. And, in this economy, where people are having trouble finding jobs, how can you be certain that you’ll have all the money you need? The answer is, if your livelihood depends on others, then you can’t. If you want to have the money necessary to give you the stress free life that you crave, you have to take control of your financial welfare out of your employer’s hand and put it into your own. To do that, takes planning. With planning, you’ll be able to decide if you need to go to school to get more skills, if you need to network to get more money making opportunities, or if you should start your own business.

Health – without health, life is not much fun. Being sick, is stressful not only on your mind and body, but it can be financially draining as well. There’s no way that any of us can guarantee ourselves an injury and illness free existence. But what we can do is to control the foods we eat and how we take care of ourselves. Researchers estimate that many of the catastrophic diseases that shorten our lifespans – heart disease, cancer, strokes, hypertension, diabetes – are largely triggered by lifestyle and food choices.

Security – everyone, even animals, feel less stressful when they have security. We have policeman to make our cities and towns secure. We have soldiers to make our country secure. And we have building guards to make our homes and offices secure. And as a result, we’re less stressful.

So if you want to live a stress free life, the key is to get these three things – money, health, and security – into your life. If you get them, no matter how, you’re pretty much guaranteed to live a pretty stress free existence.
