can a father ask for partial custody of a breastfed baby?

  • Posted on September 10, 2010 at 7:23 pm

My daughter and I live in 6hrs away from her father. He has never wanted anything to do with his daughter so when I told him I filed for child support, he threatened to take me to court for partial custody. I have never denied him visitation or denied him of being in his daughter’s life… He chose to do so. My child is currently breast feeding & I’m worried that if he is rewarded partial custody my child will no longer be able to nurse which is the best for her. I am also worried about the safety of my child because while I was pregnant his now girlfriend wished death on my then unborn child and I wouldn’t trust her around my child. He also has all male roommates & I am uncomfortable with the idea of her being around men & she’s a girl. He also uses illegal substances I.e marijuana & ecstasy which I believe can lead to him having impaired judgment with her around. Please help!

Has anyone breastfed while on suboxone, with a preemie and had problems with the baby withdrawling?

I was around 20 weeks pregnant when I started suboxone maintenance to help with my addiction to oxycontin. I had no issues during pregnancy, my baby was perfectly healthy.
However, I delivered a preterm baby girl at 35 weeks and 3 days. I’m not sure if the suboxone had anything to do with the preterm labor.
Around 2 days after my 4 lb 12 oz daughter’s birth, she started to have withdrawal symptoms. The physicians caring for her refer to it as NAS, or Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome.
There is a scoring sheet for her symptoms, and depending on her scores, (the lower the better, like golf) they will treat her with methadone.
Because her scores were so high, they began treatment on methadone. Her heart rate dropped severely, so they stopped the methadone, and started her on phenobarbital, which is an anti-seizure medicine, to help with her symptoms.
For around 5-6 days, the phenobarbital was working splendidly, and we were told our daughter would finally be coming home from the NICU in 2 or 3 days.
I wanted to breast feed, so after asking several physicians and pharmacists, I attempted to do so. Around a half an hour after my breast milk was introduced, her NAS scores spiked and they put her back on methadone. In fact, an even higher dose than before.
I was wondering if anyone else has had similar experience? Also, I am open for questions if you may be in this situation, or one like it.
Any information will help. Thank you…

I need help weaning 15 month old breastfed daughter, help!!?

  • Posted on January 4, 2010 at 4:09 am

I have been trying to wean my daughter since she was 4 months old.
She is a stubborn little bugger and won’t quit! It’s to the point now, where I will only breastfeed her at night, because she HAS to have that comfort to fall asleep. It really ties me down and my doctor wont let me take birth control pills to dry up my milk, what the heck can I do? She does drink milk out of a sippy cup throughout the day.
