Much like a story I just read on Yahoo, My daughter brought in a baby cotton tail day before yesterday,?

noticed a gash in its side (just the skin/fur, no bleeding) and decided to try and nurse it with some neosporin and gauze…but when we did, the bunny got excited and struggled and litterally we skinned half the bunnies hide off. it was a horrifc experience for my 10 year old and her frined…not to mention mom here. Much to our disbelief, 34 hours later, the bunny is doing great. I have kept in on a heating pad at medium heat and periodically put a heat lamp on it difused by a diaper cloth for 30-69 minute intervals… 4-5 times daily. since there is no bleeding, I haven’t sorried about cleaning any wounds with peroxide, but have kept it hydrated with water, and grass form outside (that hasn’t been treated with any pesticide) , rabbit food, and shredded carrots. the bunny is eating good, drinking water and today the wrckage of the old fur came off, or the buuny itself knawed it off. Litterally the bunny has fur of the head and some ofthe neck and the hind quarters. the abdomen and back area is totally exposed. TMy vet today said he was clueless as what to do for it but admitted he was amazed it had lived and was doing so well. he sugested a vet that deals with cosmetic surgery, but I’ am sure we can not afford this. He suggested vaseline to keep the “body” from drying out and beyond that he did not know what to say.(not his specailty, but a very great vet!)
I came home and mixed some neosporin and some vaseline and got it very ‘spreadable” and then with a paint brush. dabbed and painted the ointment all over his skin. I tired to lay the wrckage of the fur back over the body thinking it would help keep him warm,. but went back thirty minutes later and it was gone!!!! Tonight I reapplied the same mixture and now I’m writing as I don’t know what else I can do. I have it on regular beddign and am also feeding it timothy hay. Does any one else know if this poor littel bunny stands a chance… and if so , is there anything else I can do to hlep it. We have countless pets and laready ahve a bunny (cottontail that we rescued from our cat, but not nearly this dramatic) chinchilla, rat, hamster ( attacked by its mother and survived), 3 dogs, a cat , red eye tree frog, anole lizard (with one leg missing, another survivor) ..so we are no strangers to animals. Please if anyone has any ideas or advice, I would appreicate it.
Many thanks, and God bless!
Marcy
thank you “Animal” for your reply. I will most defintely seek out a rabbit Savvy vet for antibiotics and possibly pain med… though I am not sure how to pick up the bunny to administer any meds…
betadine….I didn’t think of that. thanks great idea and advice.
