Is the Wii Fit dangerous?

  • Posted on November 13, 2010 at 11:21 am

Being a lung transplant recipient, it is important that I get exercise to keep as fit as possible. My daughter and I ordered the Wii Fit and received it about 3 weeks ago. Last week, I was doing torso twists and the game asked me if I wanted to up the reps. I said yes and did 6 more reps for a total of 9. The next morning I woke up in excruciating pain. I know it’s my fault for continuing with the extra 6 reps, but I didn’t feel any strain while doing them. After 5 days of pain (taking Extra Strength Tylenol and a generic prescription pain reliever), I went to my doctor, who took x-rays and put me on Oxycontin w/Acetominaphen. He is concerned that I either pulled some muscles or have a fracture. Hopefully I will know more later today. Has anyone had any bad experiences with the Wii Fit?

JERUSALEM—As an uneasy truce between Israel and Hezbollah continues, millions of average men and women in the Holy Land are turning to the one simple comfort that has always seen them through the darkest days of their troubled history: the steadfast guidance of their religious faith.

“I take solace in knowing that my faith is a sanctuary, an escape from the bloodshed and turmoil,” said Haifa resident Yigal Taheri, who last week lost his wife and newborn daughter

True Stories of Dangerous Food Allergies

  • Posted on January 19, 2010 at 4:07 am

Food allergies are quite common. In fact, a good percentage of the population suffers from food allergies. But the surprising thing is that most people just do not realize that they are living with food allergies. This is because in most cases, food allergies lead to symptoms that are ongoing and slightly troubling. Also, allergies may surface many hours after the food is taken in. So, victims do not make the connection. But, food allergies can interfere with your life because it can bring on unexplained problems, forcing you to lead a restricted and sometimes, pain-filled life.

However, in some people, food allergies can trigger an overwhelming, instantaneous reaction. Here are some real life examples of how food allergy can affect the life of people you love.

A 15 year old girl in Quebec, Canada died after she kissed her boyfriend. Examinations revealed that the girl had developed a severe allergic reaction to the peanut butter that the boy had eaten hours ago! The medical team that arrived to help the girl could do nothing to save her life.

Joanna was a healthy woman of 28 when she gave birth to her little daughter Kylie. Up until then, Joanna knew nothing about food allergies. But, 8 months after little Kylie was born, Joanna knew everything about nasty little food allergies. During a weekend vacation, Joanna happened to feed her daughter a formula that contained cow’s milk. Within hours of taking in the formula, Kylie developed angry red rashes all over her face, head and torso. Medical tests showed that Kylie was allergic to oranges and eggs besides cow’s milk.

For 15 years, Susan baffled doctors with her mild but persistent symptoms. She developed mild ear aches, felt listless and would throw up for no reason. Then, one day a chance conversation at a restaurant about food allergies made Susan carry out a food elimination test at home. She eliminated milk, then pepper, then fish, and finally eggs. A week into her egg free diet and Susan was a new woman.

On a night out with friends, Nathan was a little drunk when they decided to order a midnight breakfast. As it turned out, Nathan who knew he was allergic to Tobasco, ordered a pizza and spread tobasco sauce on it. Minutes after biting into the pizza, he developed breathing problems. His friends took him to the pharmacy but the pharmacist refused to give him a medication without a prescription. Nathan called his doctor on the cell phone, but the doctor did not answer. In desperation, Nathan called his mother who directed him and his friends to the doctor’s house, where the doctor gave him a prescription and accompanied him to the pharmacy.

As you can see, food allergies can hamper your lifestyle, whether they trigger immediate or slow, insidious reactions. In any case, it is important to know about your allergies and to carry medications or instructions regarding medications with you so people around you can help in case of a sudden allergic reaction.

Is Mexico really dangerous?

  • Posted on January 5, 2010 at 8:28 am

Drug wars?   Insecurity issues?  As I sit on the patio of our ranch in the mountains of Jalisco, Mexico, waving to one of the villagers as he rides slowly by on his donkey, enjoying the view of our sheep grazing peacefully on our pastures,  I ponder what I have just read on internet.  I certainly couldn’t deny that these things exist in Mexico, but what surprises me is that it has suddenly become such big news.

I have lived and worked at Moonbeam Rancho, 2 hours from one of the major drug capitals of the world, Guadalajara for almost 20 years now,. I have also lived in the city of Guadalajara for 3 years and the two locations are worlds apart.  Nonetheless, they are both places I chose to raise my children and where I felt secure living.  I didn’t have keys to the house at the ranch since I never locked my doors,  until I began renting it as a rural tourism adventure stay.  The house was robbed about 10 years ago, but it was  an inside job by a disgruntled worker, done while I was away and only the obvious was taken, the TV, etc. while leaving my mysterious computer and FM radio alone.  I called the local police, they hauled him in for an overnight stay at the jail, he paid to get out and thus learned his lesson.  No one has ever harmed me or my two daughters; quite the opposite, the sense of community is very strong around us, and I feel I can rely on people to help me the many times I have needed it and I have gladly reciprocated.  Running a 300 acre livestock ranch on a shoestring often left me running out of gas or my nearly bald tires having repeated flats.  I have never waited long for someone to stop and help me out and to my shame, have never changed my own tire!

The city of Guadalajara has over 6 million people, yet taxis are plentiful (the taxi drivers to watch out for are in Mexico City NOT Guadalajara) and the worst they might do is try to double your fare if you are a “gringo”, but the abundance of this cheap transportation makes travelling around the city easy and economical.  It is a place fueled by drug money, but “don’t hang out your dirty laundry” is the modus operandi here and here is where the rich send their kids to the best schools, have their golf courses and every other convenience easily and safely available, including world class restaurants. Mind your own business, as I did while my daughter was attending private school, shoulder to shoulder with kids of these “drug lords’ and take everyone’s story at face value.  After all, when I first came to Moonbeam Rancho and began investing our once ample, and later meager, savings, local people certainly speculated on where my money was coming from…as it turns out it came from  my husband’s salary as a public defender in Wisconsin and my own inheritance.

I was quite integrated into our  local community about ten years ago which meant gossiping on a street corner with everyone else, when I heard in passing about the 3 “muertos”, dead persons.  I said, “what!”  how could someone have died and I didn’t know before this?!” Usually a death in our community involves holding all night vigil for the dead, a lengthy funeral and burial service which all attend.  It turned out that it was people from “outside” , not part of the community that had been quietly executed in the house in which they were hiding out.  Enough said, no more comments.  Did I feel threatened or endangered by this?  Not being in the habit of hiding out these types of people in my home, or not having the bad luck to be in that home at the wrong time, I have to say it passed me by.  These incidents have been happening in Mexico for years, as I imagine they do in many places in the world.

Drug wars?  Maybe at the border, but not where these people have their families.  13,000 dead in three years in a country of 110 million people and 1,972,550 square kilometers, what are your chances of being in the wrong place at the wrong time: more than I can calculate, but you get my drift.  Corrupt cops?  For sure, and in what country are there not, especially in undeveloped countries where wages are too low to compete with bribes.  These economic facts often translate to low cost, great value vacations where the tourist dollar is far too important to have the police hassle the tourists.

Kidnappings?  Don’t be too shocked, but I know a number of people who have been kidnapped.  They have always been either people involved in some way with drugs (in one case, just being the fiance of a drug lord’s daughter who inadvertently heard too much)  or surprisingly not such rich folks, but the small town moneychangers (changing dollars is a big business in Mexico with all the US money orders and Social Security checks that are sent down) or gas station owners that have a lot of cash on hand for quick transactions.  No foreigners are  involved, we use our ATM cards too much and that’s just too much work to plan out when you have your local factory owner easily available and know his habits and when he makes payroll.  I don’t mean to make light of a disturbing and serious crime, but the idea that it would be danger to travel in Mexico because of the possibility of being kidnapped is quite remote.

Our ranch is the most peaceful and wonderful place I have ever been in my travels of over 55 countries of the world.  Think about Mexico, the wonderful climate, amazing food, warm and friendly people, rich culture, and weigh this against some remote threat fueled by the latest press reports.  Mi casa es tu casa (my home is yours) as we say here,  I can’t guarantee your security, but I can guarantee a wonderful vacation.

Moonbeam Rancho offers a unique ranch house rental with horseback riding and lots of peaceful cultural interaction with the local villages.  More information can be seen at http://moonbeamrancho.com

DUI From Prescription Drugs In Los Angeles & San Diego Are Dangerous

  • Posted on January 1, 2010 at 7:18 pm

She was standing outside of a market with her daughter and a number of other young women selling Girl Scout cookies. The unsuspecting women did not realize the tragedy that was about to befall them as the driver of the vehicle pulled into a parking spot near the place where they stood. The driver opened his door to leave the vehicle, but changed his mind when he realized his car was still moving. He slammed his door shut and instead of tapping the brakes in order to stop the moving car, he instead slammed down on his gas pedal. The car sped forward, hitting the woman, her daughter, and the rest of the Girl Scouts head on.

Although many of the children received serious injuries, the worst of the accident was sustained by the woman. Shortly after the accident occurred, one of her legs had to be unavoidably amputated because of the extent of the damage done. Now, as the woman, her daughter, and many of the other Girl Scouts have had to undergo minor to extensive medical treatment for their injuries, charges are being filed against the driver for his reckless endangerment and the injuries that came as a direct result of his behavior. The woman, who is acting as plaintiff in the case, has filed charges against the man for driving while under the influence of a prescription painkiller.

The prescription painkiller the man was allegedly taking has been highly scrutinized as of late for its morally questionable results, function impairing side effects, and highly addictive qualities. The drug, which is too often prescribed to patients for extensive periods of time, has pain relieving results similar to that of morphine and other powerful painkillers. It has not been made clear for what condition the man was taking this prescription drug, but it is known that he took the medication shortly before getting in his car, driving to the market, and hitting and injuring the group of Girl Scouts.

As for the side effects, this painkiller has been cited as having a history of causing confusion and anxiety in those who take it on a regular basis. The drug can also cause nausea, dizziness, ad depression, all of which can lead to impaired and slow response time while driving a vehicle. In addition, studies have shown that this particular prescription painkiller can create dependency in those taking it in as little as five to seven days.

Prescription drugs, when prescribed negligently by doctors or indigested improperly by patients, can have the same effects as excessive amounts of alcohol when one is driving. If you or someone you know has been injured in a car accident that involved the ingestion of prescription drugs, you should speak with a personal injury attorney to determine how to receive compensation for your injuries.
