Depression In Pregnancy

When preparing for a baby it involves a lot of hard work. Your health should come first. You should try to resist the urge that a lot of women get and avoid trying to get everything done. It is essential for one to cut down on their chores and only do those things that will help them to relax. Mothers need to learn that taking care of themselves is an important part of taking care of their unborn baby.


It has been found very helpful for expecting mothers to talk about the things that may concern them. Talk to your friends ; family; or your partner. If it is support that you need , you don’t have to look very far.


If you find that everything has failed you , seek therapy. Antidepressants have been known to help. New evidence has shown that it is safe to treat depression while one is pregnant, for a short term. The stresses of one being pregnant can cause depression or a recurrence of depression symptoms. If you suffer from depression during your pregnancy, you are at a greater risk of having another episode after delivery known as postpartum depression.


Depression has been known to effect the ability for a woman to care for herself during pregnancy. It has also often put many mothers at the risk of using substances that could possibly harm both the mother and developing baby. The use of alcohol; tobacco; and illegal drugs can truly harm the mother and unborn child. Mother’s that suffer from depression often find it hard to bond with their baby.

This should be a bonding time for the expecting mother and partner. After all, once the baby arrives it is no longer just the two of you, now it is time for family bonding. Baby makes three. Remember that pregnancy is lonely short term, so relax. Nine months will pass in no time. You should always be thinking of what a joyous occasion that will bring you and your life.

Quitting smoking has always carried the burden of dealing with nicotine withdrawal, one of the scariest and most difficult parts of quitting. Luckily, it can be easier in a few easy ways.

First, you should know exactly what’s going to happen. The symptoms of nicotine withdrawal will tend to pull you back towards smoking.

You will be irritable. Things will wear your patience thin very, very quickly. People will probably remark that you’re being short tempered.

It won’t make you want to smoke, but you’ll likely feel cold-like symptoms as well. Coughing, sniffling, and the like are all the body’s response to the poisonous chemicals you’ve been putting in it by smoking.

You’re also going to feel a sense of depression or regret. I went through three days of feeling like I was going nowhere as I was quitting. Annoyingly, the conditioned response to being depressed is to smoke a cigarette, which would undermine the entire thing.

The good news? The symptoms go away. It takes a couple of days, but after the first three days are over you’ll notice that they’ll drop to a fraction of their intensity, and they should be gone after a full week.

If you know what you’re getting into, it becomes more manageable to deal with the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal. The first time I tried quitting (cold turkey, I might add) I became extremely depressed and confused on the second day, because I had no idea why I was experiencing those symptoms. I tried several times to quit cold turkey, but never lasted more than two or three days.

Incidentally, the way that I finally quit was with something called the EasyQuit System which is a behavioral therapy book on curing your mind’s need to smoke. After reading through it, I found quitting to be exceptionally easy and quit without looking back at all!

Alcoholics are sensitive part of our societies, especially if they are one of our close relatives. It becomes more painful if someone’s spouse happens to be an alcoholic. Knowing that your spouse is an alcoholic puts a lot of pressure and depression on a person. He/she becomes depressed on the first instance, and feels it hard to digest the reality.

Can Self-Destruction Be A Reason Of Falling Victim To Alcoholism?

Man is progressing by leaps and bounds, but he cannot overcome the depression and different psychological problems that are increasing with the passage of time. Peace of mind is obsolete among many of us. Reasons are many but the problem is one. This problem often leads people to self-destruction that is most common in youth.

Students often want to get rid of their studies and other college and university related stress. They sometimes dodge their parents and tell lies in order to get some space from their daily boring routine life. This off and on dodging turns into a permanent habit that leads them to various socially unacceptable activities, which ultimately cause self-destruction.

What are those socially unacceptable activities that a student or any depressed person adopts? The most common habit is taking drugs. Cuts and burns are also a type of self-destruction. People who turn to alcohol do so in order to release themselves from emotional stress and pain. However, many people around us choose alcoholism for the sake of fun. These fun lovers ultimately mess everything up and destroy themselves completely sooner or a bit later. This is absurd and totally unjustified.

The Best Ways To Reduce Stress And Anxiety

Dad, is it OK if we have a quick chat? I always have time for you son, you know that. Thanks Dad, well as you know and can no doubt hear I have this stuttering problem and it is causing me all kinds of problems. I am often stressed out and anxious as I constantly fear the fact that I am going to stutter when speaking to people. I just want to be able to relax, smile and be happy – in the same way that other people do. Son, I realise it is tough for you and I will do everything that I can to help. Thanks Dad, it is much appreciated.

The above is a conversation that I had with my father when I was aged fifteen. My whole family had been a massive support for me since the age of four which is the age when I developed the stutter.

My dad did manage to help me to reduce the amount that I stressed. He did this by taking me to specialists and by bringing home books about the subjects of stress, anxiety, depression, confidence and self-esteem from the library.

This helped to understand that I should appreciate the things that I have in life rather than always focusing on the things that I haven’t.

I should approach life with a positive, I can do, attitude and that the words “I can’t” do not exist.

Where I am not happy with a particular aspect of my life I need to work hard to try to improve the situation.

I should not accept second best in life as to do so would be to accept failure.

I have been doing these things for a long time now and I have to say that the difference it has made to my life has been incredible. It also helped me to overcome the stutter when I was aged twenty-two.

Grief- What Can Be Done About It?

Grief can be overwhelming. A death, separation of loved one, etc. can cause tremendous grief. This kind of grief refuses to get treated for a long period. People say that time is a great healer, but it is also true that the more time passes, the more time you have to grieve. Some time back I used to visit web pages set up by cancer patients. Most of them were young children who were suffering from leukemia. The parents used to write in the pages and share their agony. I recollect a father whose son died when he was very young. This man had uncontrollable grief and no amount of talk could help him. Simply believing that his child has now become a star in the sky did not help him.

Many deaths took place when I was active with those web pages. I learnt a lot during that period. The main lesson was that grief is not logical. To die is certain and we all know that but when somebody very dear to us dies, no amount of logic helps. One must shed tears to heal.

I have interacted with many persons with broken relationships on message boards. I observed that most of these people were ok for some days but went back to depression and pain soon. You could not believe that a person, who was advising others a few days back, has himself or herself broken down again. This was cyclic in many people. Again I learnt a lesson that grief and bitterness of having been left by a loved one do not go away soon. The inner mind carries all emotions that defy any logic that the outer mind proposes.

What is the remedy? I have found that another who is also grieving best understands a person who is grieving. If a grieving person talks to a healthy individual, no amount of interaction helps. But if he/she talks to someone who is also facing grief, understanding is very fast.
