I think my milk is drying up, help!!!?

  • Posted on February 25, 2011 at 1:24 am

My daughter just turned 9 weeks today and I am in fear that my milk is drying up!! I am so upset! I want to breastfeed her till she is at least 12 months!! Before this happened I would nurse her about every 2 hours and for at least 20 minutes on my right breast and I would pump the left one. I would normally get about 2 to 3 bottles a day. Well, now I am lucky if I get one whole bottle in a day and my breasts are always soft!!! I was using a nipple shield, and a few days ago I decided to try to go without it and now my daughter prefers not to use it as well. And now today when I was nursing it almost seemed like she got frustrated while nursing so I tried to hand express and not much is coming out!! Since I have had the trouble the last few days I have also been nursing her on both breasts. One of the weirdest things is right when she latches on, I feel a let down and she begins to gulp, sometimes so fast she will detach herself to catch her breath!! I drink a ton of water everyday, however, I job 1.5 miles a day with her in the baby jogger. I also did have a hot chai tea the other day to soothe a sore throat! I have been taking fenugreek also. The reason I pump is so I have bottles for when I am out and about because my husband doesn’t want me to nurse in public. And of course I am one big ball of stress from all of this which I know doesn’t help the situation, but I can’t help it. I am trying to relax in my room and read while I nurse her. Could it be that she is going through a growth spurt and is trying to regulate my supply and my breasts just need time to catch up? Any help or suggestions would be great!! I also think I am going to get up in the night to nurse her more frequently. She will sleep 6 hours straight, but not the last few nights, so I really dont know why this is happening…..please help!!

Help drying up my milk…baby is 3 months old?

  • Posted on October 17, 2010 at 9:23 pm

Please do not tell me I shouldn’t do this, because it is hard enough for me to HAVE to stop breastfeeding. I don’t need a lecture! I have struggled with my supply ever since my daughter was born. I have taken all of the herbs and drank extra water and I finally had enough to satisfy her. Well then I went back to work, and it dropped so I had to give one formula bottle while she was away from me. Now my thyroid levels have gone crazy and we can not get them settled, so my milk has dropped to nothing. When she nurses on both sides I still have to give her a 2 ounce bottle of formula. I have spoken to her pedi and he says to just stop and not beat myself up about it. But its hard, I feel like a failure. Anyways, I need suggestions on how to dry it up. It has been a little over 24 hours since I have nursed her and I am starting to feel full and hurt. What can I do, and is what is the fastest way to dry it up? Thanks in advance!

Is my breast milk drying up?

  • Posted on October 8, 2010 at 5:23 pm

I am nursing my 16lb 6-month old. This is my 3rd child and my 3rd nursing experience, but I got pregnant at 3 months while nursing my other two (hence, my children are 13 months and 12 months apart). My milk always started drying up, I assume as a result of pregnancy.

Well, I’m not pregnant now, but it seems like my milk is once again drying up. My daughter will latch on then pull away vigorously again and again, until she arches her back and starts crying. I don’t supplement but I did start her on solids because she doesn’t seem to get full just nursing. And because we keep trying, my nipples are getting so sore.

Important info: I am going through an extremely stressful time at the moment, and am losing weight and not eating as much as I know I should. I know this may have something to do with it. is most likely influencing it. I am drinking tons of fluids as that seems to be easier than trying to swallow food.

Help!!! Breast Milk is drying up! ?

  • Posted on October 6, 2010 at 9:24 pm

I recently had a horrible stomach virus. I still breastfed my 4 month old daughter even though I was sick. However, I eventually became dehydrated and my milk production has gone down considerably. I want to continue breast feeding her, but I am afraid that I will dry up soon. It has now been 2 weeks since the nasty virus. I have been drinking tons of water and eating good and I am still barely producing about 3 ounces at each feeding if that and I am having to supplement. Any advice on how to increase my milk production would be greatly appreciated. Happy Holidays!! :)
