One study showed that regular exercise about three times a week was just as effective as being on antidepressants. Almost everyone can do exercise. The benefits are enormous for general health but for depression, experts note that after exercise, patients feel and look happier because of the release of endorphins which have a positive impact on our mood. Then there are all the other benefits as well such as looking better so that your self confidence receives a boost. Stress, anxiety and sleep problems improve as well. There is the social element too which should not be underestimated as we know that socialising on any level can be a help to a depressed patient. Those people lucky enough to have close affectionate relationships with partner, family and or friends have a much lower possibility of getting depressed. Fish oil might sound smelly but it can do wonders for the depressed state of mind. We are talking here about diet because let’s face it the food we eat has an immediate and lasting effect on our state of mind and our general mental well being. Look at the results of a study done where depressed patients were given 1 gram of fish oil a day and the symptoms of sadness, suicidal thoughts, anxiety, insomnia and loss of libido all dropped by 50%. If you are suffering from depression, get some fish oil into your diet. That can be in the form of pharmaceutical grade capsules or by eating salmon, tuna, flaxseed oil and olive oil and nuts. Add complex carbohydrates, protein such as lean meat and a supply of Vitamin B and D foods and you will be well on the way to recovery. Diet, like exercise has been overshadowed in looking at the alternative treatments for depression.

The big pharm have been keeping very quiet about the poor results that antidepressants actually have in curing depression and obviously will not be rushing to put up websites on depression alternatives. The scandalous statistic is that anti depressant medications will actually only cure about one third of all cases! In about 5% of cases, depression symptoms will actually get worse. Can You Recognize Signs Of Depression ?

We do not realise just how important our brain is in controlling every single thing we do, feel or experience. That is especially true for feelings of hunger, sadness or euphoria. So, what is going on? Well, we have billions of brain cells which are all communicating with each other and they live in what we could call a server. If the server crashes for whatever reason then this could be one of the depression signs. Brain cells or neurons will use neurotransmitters which are basically chemicals such as serotonin, endorphins and dopamine to send out the signals to other cells in our bodies. We get the message and we react. That could be a call to action, a feeling, an emotion, hunger, fatigue or sexual stimulation. It is when these brain chemicals get upset for whatever reason that signs of depression begin to show.

Dopamine is very important for communicating feelings of pleasure which we get when we satisfy our hunger, thirst, sexual needs, or experience pleasure through music or movement. If there is any imbalance in these neurotransmitters then this causes the brain to malfunction and our moods and feelings will be compromised. That is what happens with depression as the main neurotransmitter (serotonin) which governs our moods is depleted and feelings of sadness and hopelessness become pervasive. It is this feeling down which is one of the first signs of depression. But this sadness is not just a temporary phase of the blues but persists to such an extent that we cannot function normally at all in our daily lives.

Have you ever wondered why when we are feeling down we start to seek comfort from carbohydrates which we call comfort foods with good reason. Snacking, binging could be an indication that depression signs are starting to show. Serotonin controls our appetite so when our serotonin levels are low we decide to self medicate in a certain sense and we start eating these cakes and sweets to console ourselves and our serotonin levels may start to come up again but the effects on our waistline later on may cause us to become even more depressed. It seems to be a vicious circle. Eating disorders are another one of the signs of depression.

Other signs of depression may be a lack of interest in once pleasurable activities, indecision, lethargy, low energy and reduced sex drive. Insomnia, feelings of guilt, headaches and indigestion all add to the mix and are indications that signs of depression are evident. Meds for Treating Depression – What The Pharmaceutical Companies Forgot To Tell Us

Our brain is like an enormous telephone exchange where thousands of messages are sent to make us act think, feel and move. The neurotransmitters in the brain are chemical messengers and there are several which have been identified such as serotonin, endorphins and norepinephrine. Apparently ,depressed patients’ chemical messengers just do not function normally and there seems to be much less serotonin around which is so important in governing how we feel and our feeling of happiness and contentment with our lot. These are essential in helping us get through the day. Now the pharmaceutical companies have developed lots of meds for treating depression which act on the chemical messengers in the brain but the sad fact is that they have omitted to tell us a few home truths about these meds.

One concerns women who are taking Tamoxefin for cancer. If they take that medicine with the classic SSRIs , then there is more than twice the risk that their tumours will return over a two year period. These findings were presented by the American Society of Clinical Oncology. The FDA is now about to issue another warning about this. Alternative meds for treating depression in these women will have to be found.

Another thing big pharma has forgotten to tell us is that serotonin which controls to a certain extent our mood , also controls our appetite, sleep patterns and mental alertness. So we are using SSRIS to correct serotonin but that will inevitably have repercussions for the other bodily functions I have mentioned above. Now we see why SSRIs can play havoc with our bodies. Meds for treating depression are certainly not to be taken lightly. Talk about taking a sledgehammer to crack a nut !

They have also forgotten to tell us that the success rates of these meds for treating depression is so modest that some people doubt whether it is worth their while even taking them. Figures now show that only about a third of the patients who take these depression meds will be completely cured. Compare that with a placebo which relieved depression symptoms in about 15% to 20% of patients !

More and more patients are turning to alternative treatments and trying to change their lifestyle as that invariably has a very important impact on depression. Looking after exercise, diet, sleep, getting enough sunshine which is so important for SAD (seasonal affective disorder) and choosing a herbal remedy which will probably be more effective and certainly safer than many of the depression meds now on the market.
