Feeding question regarding my 6 week old?

  • Posted on December 21, 2010 at 1:24 am

My daughter is breast fed, but as of the last three days come the night time she has been extremely hungry, her last feeding before she sleeps through out the night. She usually starts feeding around 10:30 her final meal of the day. Normally she would feed on and off for an hour until she fell asleep for the night. As of recent she has been eating me dry. For instance last night she ate both boobs, and was still hungry and trying to find the boob but I had nothing. Thankfully I bought formula just in case, I have the expensive crap in a can that is liquid, it is the only one she will drink (long story I got sick and couldn’t breast feed while puking in a toilet). So of course I whip up a bottle real quick. She devours that, and is still hungry. This went on for about 3.5 hours. She would fall asleep and wake up trying to find the boob. I was talking to my mum about this and she says its normal for a baby to sometimes go through growth spurts she said I did it along with my brother and sister as well. My mum told me to buy pablum and put a teaspoon in her formula after she is done with the breast. Has anyone done this? My mum said she did it to us and it won’t hurt my daughter, and I trust my mum but I just want to make sure. She is only 6 weeks old. But she is large for her age I’m told. People think she is three months old. My daughter weighs 12lbs 4 oz now, and is 59 cm long. She has gained almost 1/3 a pound a week since she has been born and she has grown a cm a week since being born because she has grown 6 cm in 6 weeks. She is very attentive and already basically holding her own head up. I’m told she is advanced for her age but I’m a first time mom, I think everything she does is amazing and normal for her age, but regardless I’m told differently. My doctor was impressed with her size and told me she will be tall, well anyways, a side from this is it OK to do this? What is the earliest anyone has given there child pablum? I asked my doctor this while pregnant and he gave me a sketchy answer of when you can’t satisfy their hunger anymore with just breast milk. Well that time is arriving, is it still to early? Will a teaspoon in infant formula hurt her?

Is it time to give up breast feeding?

  • Posted on November 6, 2010 at 3:24 am

My daughter is 7 weeks old. About 3 weeks ago my milk supply started to dry up. Im not sure why, I was exclusively nursing her. At that time I had to start giving her bottles of breast milk I already stored and I started to drink tea to increase milk supply. Whenever I give my daughter a bottle I pump right after because I know its a supply and demand thing. When I do nurse I have to give a bottle after because she isnt full. When I pump I only get 1/2 oz to 1 1/2 oz per breast. I dont know what to do. Im drinking 1 1/2 liters of water per day, 2-3 cups of the tea and juices. I eat healthy and pump whenever she eats. I love the bond we have when I nurse and I dont want stop but what other choice do I have. I have done everything my midwife has suggested.
I do nurse and let her empty both breasts before giving her a bottle. She is satisfied with that for about 20 minutes before she is hungry again, thats when i give the bottle.

My aunt is a LC in Vegas so I have talked to her about what to do. I know there is a pill to increase milk supply. BUT I live in Germany and when I asked my midwife and my doc neither one have heard of it.

When I give a bottle, she will take 4-6 oz at a time. The 1 oz Im getting from pumping doesnt compare to that. It literally takes me all day to pump that much.

Feeding Newborn Babies?

  • Posted on October 16, 2010 at 1:26 am

I live in a very dry climate, in the summer the highest temperature gets up to 115 degrees. I just became a first time grandmother two weeks ago. My daughter and I went to his first checkup and she asked the nurse when she should start giving him water, the nurse told her not until 6 months which I thought was odd especially where we live and it is so easy to become dehydrated especially children. My grandson is 2 weeks old, when should my daughter give him water? I say he should be drinking it now since the weather is starting to get warmer.
