A dysfunctional, Christian fundamentalist family has a daughter?

in her late teens who is a mess, despite the devout mother’s best efforts, and a baby daughter whom they are trying to shield from the big sister’s craziness and raise right. The two girls are close despite a considerable age difference and to the consternation of the mother, who uses the older sister as an object lesson of how not to behave! Despite all the trouble big sister causes, the mother still tries to reach out to her and loves her. The oldest daughter is an alcoholic, a pill head, and a chain smoker who cuts herself. She has also lost complete faith in the God she grew up believing in. The question is why? Her boyfriend whom she met in rehab cannot fathom the unremitting hatred she has for her mother, brother and his wife and the indifference towards her father. The family seems nice enough. They are kind, sunny and devout Christians after all. What’s going on here?
