You might become a cult hero

  • Posted on January 25, 2010 at 10:11 am

You’ve written a few good songs, made a dollar or two jamming with a few bands or busking on the corner. Now, you’re no longer satisfied: dreaming of stardom, you’re hungry for the big time.

The worst thing to do is to hold out for the big break that never happens: Better to play for the love of music. With no false hopes and no illusions, start from zero. Somewhere, there’s an audience for you. Let someone hear you – mother, daughter, friend, lover – and listen to what they have to say. Drink in the encouragement and consider their criticism. It’s all good. Just get someone, anyone, anywhere, anytime to listen to you. Sing in the dark, sing in the park. Play for friends, for strangers, for young and for old.

All you need is a song and a crowd; the rest comes easy, one step at a time. The day will come when you’ll earn a place of respect. People will notice when you walk into a room. You won’t hear a pin drop when you begin to play at a local coffee house. The whole room will “rock” when you plug in and play at your neighborhood blues cafe.

But, if that’s not enough and you still want to get signed to a major record. Pet your dog. Kiss your wife or girlfriend goodbye. You’ll be away for a long, long time playing for people you don’t know in places you’ve never been before. Your chances of becoming a rock star are about as good as winning a lottery. Call it a glass ceiling. Call it a brick wall, mainstream success is rare.

They say the Beatles started their career playing in strip joints in Hamburg, Germany. Forty years ago, Hamburg’s infamous red-light district was where some of the world’s most popular rock musicians paid their dues. One day Brian Epstein discovered the Beatles when they packed the Star Club with whores, pimps, transvestites, sailors and fans of “beat music” swilling alcohol and dancing until dawn. Epstein saw something in them that no one else could see. Somehow he knew one day their raw sound would thrill audiences with a magic that will never return again.

Maybe someone will notice you one day. All you’ve got to is get the right people interested in what you’re doing and hold that interest long enough for them to “buy” what you’re doing. The more interested they are, the longer they stick around, the more ideas they’ll get for selling what you have to offer.

‘The cream always rises to the top’ doesn’t mean the best rise to the top. Without at least some marketing savvy, the average musician won’t make it very far alone no matter how good he is. Which brings me to my next thought. A performing career isn’t for most people. Most so-called pro musicians live below the poverty line spending their daylight hours watching TV in a dingey downtown apartment waiting for the phone to ring with a booking for your next paying gig. When you’re a seventeen year-old drop out, playing bar songs for a crowd of rowdy drunks might be someone’s idea of a good time but there are better ways to make a living.

If you want a life, think again. With a strong regional presence, it’s possible to make a name for yourself as an artist. If you travel a circuit, and stay around long enough your audience will grow and your CD sales will climb. If you’re good, you might become a cult hero or even a regional icon

Persuasion Techniques: 3 Methods Of Persuasion To Attain Your Desires

  • Posted on July 1, 2009 at 10:12 pm

Persuasion techniques are effective weapons of communication. They allow you to get what you want whenever you want without having to use force. A lot of successful people have gotten to where they are because they knew how to use persuasion techniques to their advantage.

I’m sure you wouldn’t want to miss out on similar opportunities. Below are some persuasion tactics that will suit almost any situation.

1) Be their hero.

The very foundation of persuasion techniques lies in the person doing the talking. If you don’t have any self-confidence, you’re not going to get very far. You might garner a pity vote or two, but that’s not what you want to happen.

To be persuasive, you have to be their hero, their knight in shining armor. You must not falter in your quest because one wrong move can send you spiraling back to zero. So trust in yourself and your skills. Hone them with every opportunity and take the time to actually practice them.

2) Level with them.

If you want to persuade somebody, you have to understand where they’re coming from. You also have to possess an intuition of how to approach certain kinds of people. This sort of intuition only gets stronger with every use of your persuasion techniques.

Along the way, you’ll learn that you can’t use facts and numbers to persuade an emotional person, because that person can’t “connect” with what you’re talking about.

Likewise, you can’t expect to persuade an “analytical” type to donate money to your cause with tears and heart-warming stories of the endangered Pandas in China. This leads me to one of the most important persuasion techniques you have to master.

3) What’s in it for them.

Whether the person you’re trying to persuade asks this out loud or not, they are most likely thinking about it. To get someone to support you, you have to tell them how your proposal will benefit them.

Not everyone will agree immediately to your request, unless you clearly indicate what’s in it for them. As the persuader, you have to be two steps ahead of the others.

You have to know what they might want to have in return. Do they want the satisfaction of a job well done or do they want clearer compensation? Be ready to offer what they really want; because unless you hold what they desire on your plate, the chances of persuasion are slim.

Using persuasion techniques varies from person to person. Others are naturally gifted with a golden tongue and can persuade anybody of anything. However, practice, perseverance and the right knowledge combined can lead to your success.

Fire Emergency Preparation For School

  • Posted on July 1, 2009 at 9:05 pm

A fire can occur at any place even if there are systems in place such as smoke alarms and water sprinklers. Should this happen in the school where the person is working in, it will be a good idea to review the emergency preparation plans.

The fire emergency preparation plan involves two things. These are namely information and delegation. The first thing the individual should do is read the manual and note where are the nearest exits. This is usually posted in each classroom with lighted signage’s showing the way.

This matter should also be discussed with fellow faculty and staff if certain improvements can be suggested. It is only after a well thought of plan is made that this should be explained to the students.

The sad part is there will be some people who will not take the matter seriously. This should be firmly stressed because this could mean a matter of life or death to everyone when this happens. .

There may be fire drills conducted once a year but these are not done on a regular basis. This means that many will panic when the real thing happens so preparedness is something that should not be taken lightly.

Delegation depends on who first noticed the fire until the evacuation has been done. If there is smoke coming out of one room, the individual should not open the door because oxygen will just make the fire stronger causing a back draft and a possible explosion.

The individual should immediately call 911 and pull the fire switch so that the teachers and the students are alerted of the danger. Some classes may order everyone to form a line in the back then proceed out slowly to safety by moving to the nearest fire exit.

There are fire extinguishers usually situated along the hallways or in the classrooms. These can be used to handle small fires but should not be used to handle bigger ones because there is not enough to kill the blaze. The person should not try to be a hero but rather help get other people out.

There will usually be a lot of smoke making it difficult to see what is in front. To avoid suffocating, it will be a good idea to put something to cover the face and then use the sense of touch to get the feel of what is in front.

Elevators should never been used in the event of a fire. The power could short out keeping the person trapped inside and even cause death due to smoke inhalation. All personnel should use the stairs since this is the fastest way to get out.

Should someone be caught on fire, the individual should help by putting a heavy blanket to put out the flames. If this should happen to the person, the right thing to do would be to stop, drop and roll.

The last part of any fire preparation plan is the assembly point where everyone in the class should meet so everyone can be accounted for. Everyone should stay put until someone with higher authority issues the order that it is safe to go back inside.

Everyone should be well aware of the fire emergency preparation plan since this is the only way to get out of a dangerous situation.
