Potty Training Toddlers – The Importance of Getting it Right the First Time

  • Posted on July 2, 2009 at 4:51 pm

If you’re like most parents who are still monitoring their two-year-olds’ pee pees and poops, you’re looking forward to potty training your toddler and moving closer and closer to a diaper-free household. And who could blame you? In addition to being expensive and messy, diapers may even serve as daycare roadblocks. So, it’s in everyone’s best interest to get the job done sooner rather than later…

Understandably, however, you may be unclear on best method for potty training toddlers and may even be completely clueless. If so, don’t worry – none of us was born knowing how to potty train children (it’s definitely a learned skill) and you can get reliable help for real-life experts… like me.

I’ve been potty training toddlers for the past thirty years and have witnessed firsthand what approaches and techniques work best. I have also counseled hundreds of parents along the way and conducted extensive research in order to learn what pediatricians, child therapists, and other experts advise.

And although potty training methods vary widely there are four basic approaches. The first is, what I call the “let-children-teach-themselves.” Widely used in the United States, it is based on a belief that potty training is a developmental skill that cannot be “taught” – much like walking, talking and eating solid foods. In other words, children will be potty trained when they are ready. End of story.

To be perfectly blunt, this is hooey, and in my opinion has far more to do with parental preferences than it does with sound scientific theory. Simply put, this “method” requires little or no preparation and easily fits into busy lifestyles. Why? Because parents aren’t doing anything! Yes, they may introduce their children to the potty, but that’s about it.

As a result it usually takes 1-6 months longer to potty train; often interferes with childcare opportunities because these toddlers are that much older when they’re trained; diapers are needed longer, so parents waste money; and it’s more difficult to potty train these toddlers because their behaviors are more entrenched.

The second method for potty training toddlers is one that is not commonly used in the United States and practiced mostly in developing nations. I call it the “potty-train-babies” approach.

Parents using this process, hold their infants over the potty to catch their eliminations. It’s based on the theory that babies will gradually learn to signal before they urinate or have bowel movements. And while there is scientific evidence that supports this theory and it certainly puts an early end to diapers, it is extremely impractical for most families. Why? Because it requires an extreme level of attention and commitment from parents, grandparents, babysitters, and anyone else who comes in contact with the babies. Also, as you might expect accidents are commonplace so time and energy spent cleaning up can be onerous. In other words, this is definitely not potty training made easy!

The third basic approach is the “practice-makes-perfect” method; over time parents introduce their children to the potty and conduct regular teaching sessions with them. The system is based on the belief is that toddlers will eventually “get it” and transition from diapers to pull-ups to underwear.

Again, in my opinion, this method sets parents – and children – up for failure for three major reasons:

1. The vast majority of parents cannot remain consistent over the extended period of time this requires (i.e. practice sessions must be frequent and regular in order for this to work). Also, you should be aware that this is a slow and circuitous road to a diaper-free world, so be prepared to hunker down for the long haul if go this route.

2. Using pull-ups and/or diapers during the training process sends complicated mixed messages to toddlers and severely hampers the potty training process

3. Children are learning to use the potty at their parents’ initiation, not their own! That’s not the objective here… the goal is to potty train toddlers, not parents!

The fourth basic method for potty training toddlers is the accelerated approach. Although there are many different techniques used within this fundamental mode – some good, others not – I of course, advocate, my own version. I call it the BRIEFS” potty training system.

Although it is similar to the approach recommended by Dr. Phil and other experts and is based on the same core philosophies, I have added my own “arms and legs,” which are based on my years and years of personal experience. But it’s vitally important that you also know that before I publicly offered potty training advice, I made sure that my system was supported in theory and practice by pediatricians, child therapists, and other experts. My goal is to share my knowledge and expertise so parents can truly potty train their children in 48 hours or less – and do so joyfully, safely, completely, and successfully.

Following is a quick 30,000-ft. overview of my method, which combines time-tested, wholesome behavioral modification techniques within a positive, nurturing and emotionally supportive environment.

- Before potty training toddlers parents assess their developmental and chronological readiness

- One parent (or teacher) commits to potty training process for 24-48 hours and sets up a one-on-one teaching environment and prepares carefully in advance.

- The potty training teacher follows specific step-by-step instructions, which are designed to accelerate the potty-training process

- Potty training is accomplished in much less time than traditional methods and provides a wonderful bonding experience for parents and their children.

In the end, however, how you potty train your child will be a personal decision based on your lifestyle and preferences, and regardless of which method you choose, it’s important to keep the following in mind…

1. Toddlers have a profound and earnest wish to grow and master new skills, even though they may act as stubborn as mules! Children want to be potty trained, even if they don’t show it!

2. Normal, healthy toddlers between the ages of 18 and 27 months should be physically and developmentally ready for potty training. If you have any concerns regarding your child’s readiness, check with his/her pediatrician.

3. Parents who have a well-thought-out and workable plan – and execute it properly (this is a big one) – are far more successful (i.e. their children are potty trained faster, less stressfully, and more completely) than those who do not. Period.

I hope this information has been helpful and that your potty training experience will be joyful and successful.

Mary E. Eule, BA, MS is a professional writer and researcher who has spent the last three decades helping parents potty train their children in 48 hours or less. She is the developer of the BRIEFS potty training system and author of the e-book, “The Official BRIEFS Potty Training Guide.” Visit her website: http://www.AskThePottyTrainer.com to download her free potty e-course or to get more free information about potty training toddlers.

Panic Attacks – What Do I Do To Stop Them?

  • Posted on July 2, 2009 at 2:20 pm

Some people go years upon years of experiencing Panic Attacks in their every day life including when they are sleeping.

From the research I’ve done on the subject, because of my own panic attacks, I’ve found that when you are put in a situation where you are not comfortable and your “fight or flight” hormones kick in, your mind remembers. Your memories are stored in your brain like a huge file cabinet. Every time something happens to you that seems remotely like a past situation, your body responds the same way.

After three long years of having what would seem to other people a string of bad experiences, I finally had to figure out what was happening and why up until 2003, I had what I thought was a great life…
Marriage was wonderful.
Job was great (started my own business in 2002).
My children were thriving and excelling at everything they tried (I worked at home and was able to be with them when they weren’t at school).
My bills were paid and my credit was wonderful.

Then things changed…2003 started a three year streak of bad luck. One day my husband told me that his ex wife had contacted him (after not hearing from her for over 10 years). He was excited…I was sick. I had had a terrible divorce because of other women being involved. That started my panic attacks. Once the attacks started, every time I heard the ex’s name, I would start sweating and get nauseous. My heart would start beating extremely hard and I would have to lay down to stop the attack. We argued constantly and our married life fell apart.

To shorten up a long story, eventually my husband left me to go back to his ex wife. I continued to have panic attacks every time I was in a situation I thought I couldn’t handle. The next year was a very hard year for me. I got another divorce, I had two family members pass away, I met another man from a new town and moved my family to be with the new beau, and I quit my business that was failing. My children were acting up all the time and I really felt like I had lost all grip on my life and what I was doing with my life. I continued to have panic attacks due to the new relationship. I would do everything I could to sabotage it. I would start fights and threaten to leave. Panic attacks were so bad I felt like committing suicide to end them, all because I was scared to be in another relationship where I felt I had to watch out for past girlfriends and ex wives.

After a lot of soul searching, meditating, and several herbal therapies, I had slowed the frequency of having panic attacks that were stemming from past experiences. It wasn’t until I heard about Joe Barry that I finally cured the panic attacks.

I have started a new life with a new husband and my children are happy and healthy again. My life is back on track for growth and new experiences without the constant worry of the dreaded panic disorder.

If you are experiencing what you think are panic attacks, (I used to call them mental meltdowns), then click here for more information on how to cure yourself but only if you’re ready to start living without so much fear in your life.

Scholarships for Nurses

  • Posted on July 2, 2009 at 2:20 pm

If you’re on your way to college, you might be confused with the many courses being offered. Choosing one can give you a headache, but if you already know what particular career you want to pursue after college, you will not have much difficulty.

Observe the trends in the job market. The medical field hires a lot of competent people every year, and the demand for medical professionals is still increasing at present. Even those who already have a career are looking for ways to join this particular field.

Nurses are badly needed. The demand for nursing graduates is growing. Health agencies and other services are looking for highly trained and qualified nurses. That is probably why many students are attracted to this field.

The primary problem that most students encounter before they go to college, especially with a nursing course, is funding. Though this field is very much in demand, not all aspiring nursing students are able to graduate because of financial problems.

Public colleges which offer nursing courses can cost you around $14,000 a year; and if you want to attend college in a private university, the cost can reach as high as $30,000 a year. And to think that the tuition fees increase every year. You can just imagine how much it’s going to cost you if you want to graduate with a nursing degree.

Nursing is quite an expensive course, and if you don’t have the money, you can’t possibly graduate. What a sad ending for an aspiring student, but don’t lose hope yet. There are still ways to pursue your college studies without anymore worrying for your expenses.

Education helps people learn about different things, but it doesn’t end there, it is also a business in itself. If you don’t have enough money, you can’t get the best education possible. If you don’t have money, that is not a problem. If you want to finish a course in nursing, you must be aware that it entails a lot of coursework. So if you are a working student, you will surely have difficulty in keeping up with your job and the coursework. What you need is a college scholarship to fully concentrate in your education.

First and foremost, you must contact nursing associations in your locality, your state’s nursing board, and the American Nurses Association (ANA). Check the website of ANA on the net because they can provide you with the necessary information you will need for a nursing scholarship and grants. All it takes is a little research.

Federal government funds certain nursing scholarships, as well as private entities. Schools, agencies, and corporations offer nursing scholarships for individual students.

You will need all indispensable information from certain people like the college of nursing department head. He/she can provide you with scholarship/grant applications. Or you can also contact the person in authority who provides scholarship/grants to nursing students.

You’re quite lucky if you have parents who can fund your way to college, but if you’re one of the less fortunate ones, you definitely need some form of assistance. Stand up and make a move, don’t just sit there and wait for someone to offer you a scholarship of some sort. Chances are it wouldn’t come looking for you.

If you are quite confident that you can maintain a scholarship, apply for one. It never hurts to try.

The Central Principle of the Law of Attraction

  • Posted on July 2, 2009 at 7:15 am

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last 10 years, it is likely that you are familiar with a quirky little television program known as The Oprah Show.

If you watch the program often, you may have seen an episode in which they discussed the Law of Attraction Because the theory is so cutting-edge, the principle of the Law of Attraction can seem somewhat difficult to grasp if you don’t know the whole story.

The concept at the heart of the Law of Attraction is that we can control what life gives us by controlling our thoughts. The ideas cover everything from getting the job you want to getting the mate you want. People in both the scientific and spiritual communities accept the Law of Attraction as fact.

If you talk to a Quantum Mechanics scientist, you can discover the true depth of what the Law of Attraction is getting at. Quantum Physics demonstrates that the whole world is made up of energy, and our minds — which are also energy — can manipulate the energy of objects and thoughts outside ourselves.

But as you know, everything good has a reverse, and this includes the Law of Attraction. If you want something, but think about being afraid of NOT getting it, then there is a good chance that what you want to avoid will actually happen. Experiencing what we want to avoid may not seem like a good thing, and it isn’t, but it does help prove the principle of the Law of Attraction. When the relationship ends, it may seem to that person that the Law of Attraction failed them. Their desire to stop the marriage from ending didn’t come true. But in fact, the Law of Attraction worked perfectly. It doesn’t necessarily bring us what we WANT. It brings us what we CONCENTRATE ON. The married spouse concentrated on not wanting to lose their partner, and thus they attracted losing their partner.

There is no difference between what you concentrate on wanting and what you concentrate on not wanting. Concentration is concentration. So the Law of Attraction brings you the thing you focused your thoughts on.

To create the life you want using the Law of Attraction, you must banish all fear and concentrate only on moving toward exactly what you want. If you do, then what you want will move toward you, as well.

Kirk James is a technical writer, researcher, software developer, and happily married man. Understanding the heart of the law of attraction started him on his road to success, but it wasn’t until he understood the 11 Forgotten Laws of Attraction that the world became his for the taking. Twelve Signs You Are Not Listening

  • Posted on July 1, 2009 at 10:12 pm

It is difficult to listen to the chatter of our self-talk in our head and effectively listen to someone else at the same time. If we are concentrating on other things, re-playing past conversations, rehearsing what we are going to say next, getting defensive, judging what the other person is saying, trying to read their mind or day dreaming, then we are being fully present and listening completely to what the other person is saying. This is when miscommunication can result in conflicts, frustration, hurt feelings, resentment, misinformation, money loss, relationship loss or job loss. Simply said, you can not listen to two people at the same time, yourself and someone else. Do you think you are a good listener? Take a look at the scenariors below and see how you rate.

1. You are rehearsing what you want to say.

2. You are thinking that I don’t have time to listen to her.

3. You are planning what you are going to do this weekend.

4. You are feeling defensive and want to fight back.

5. You are thinking how much your boss sounds like your father.

6. You are anxious to find out how the show you have been watching is going to end.

7. You are worried that you will miss your bus.

8. You are gazing out the window at the beautiful, sunny day and wish you were outside.

9. You remember having this same conversation with your wife many times before.

10. You interrupt him and start telling him what to do.

11. You are thinking, “How can he be saying that, he doesn’t know what he is talking about.”

12. You keep telling yourself that your sister doesn’t really mean what she is saying.

Do you want to improve your communication and listening skills? My newly released book, If I Could Just Get Out of My Own Head: A No-Nonsense Guide to Communicating Effectively, can help. This book offers concrete and practical skills for quieting the chatter in your head so that you can be present and participate fully in all your conversations and also outlines the three building blocks to clear communication. Why Time Management is Required in Owning your Own Home Business

  • Posted on July 1, 2009 at 9:04 pm

When you work your own home-based business, you need to be cognoscente of one thing above all others: controlling your time. This one thing is far more necessary to your home-based business growth than anything else because it measures how much effort and money you’re investing into the growth or development of future plans.

Think about this: if you started your home-based business because you weren’t earning enough money working for the man, then you need to be certain that you’re earning that money that you wanted to get before you left your job. If you’re not, then you should go straight back to your job and get it back.

The only way to ensure that you’re earning more money is to look at the ratio between dollars earned, and time spentmanaging. After all, if it takes you 80 hours of work to make only a few bucks more than it took you to earn working nine-to-five, then you’re still in a pretty bad situation. Improving your personal controlling your time strategies is one thing you can do to ensure that you’re getting more work done in your time on the job, and therefore, earn more money when working the same number of hours.

After all, if you could do the same amount of work in 30 hours than you could normally do in 40, then you could earn back 10 more hours during your week to increase the number of business ventures you pursue, or to dedicate more time to your family|home|family or home|home or family}}} life.

Many people find the challenges of controlling your time to be very great, especially when you have no bosses or customers breathing down your neck, but if you have already developed a strong work ethic on your own (which you must have, or else you wouldn’t be very successful in your own home-based business at all), then you have all the tools you need in order to do really well with controlling your time.

There are two different types of time management skills. The first is saving time by removing repetiitive and unnecessary tasks, and the second is developing your skills at the essentials.

The first kind of time management is necessary because by getting rid of repetiitive and unnecessary tasks you will naturally have more time to do other things. Remove from your day any tasks which are not time-sensitive or essential to the everyday operation of your business. If you do these things every week instead of once a day, then you will reclaim many hours of time during the week. Also, if you find that you do these tasks more than once per day, then you’re still probably not working at peak efficiency.

The 2nd type of time management deals with getting tasks done faster}. In this case, you must choose what types of things take up a lot of your time, and if they could be formulated in some way. Perhaps hiring someone to do some of these tasks is an option. If not, is there some software program which could make this task easy?

If you can’t use software, then you might try developing your own skills more. For example, have you ever learned how to speed read? You can try this online speed reading test to see if you can read more than 800 WPM. If you cannot, there is definitely room for development. Imagine how much time you could save if you read 2-3x faster!

Some Strategies to Define Motivation

  • Posted on July 1, 2009 at 9:04 pm

We’ve all heard a lot of discussion about the importance of motivation both in ourselves and in our employees. While the topic comes up a great deal, it’s difficult to define motivation because, like leadership, it’s a bit of an abstract term. You can find a great deal of information available on motivation, and this can help you create a definition to work from as you are working on increasing this important trait in yourself and in others.

The Broad Definition

If you’re looking for the most common way to define the term, the most common definition is that motivation is whatever causes people to act the way they do. For example, if a person robs a convenience store, he or she probably had some reason for acting that way – some motivation that prompted the action. Everything we do, including the choices we make, is going to be affected by our motivation.

Intrinsic Versus Extrinsic

These are two of the basic aspects of motivation. You need to understand these concepts in order to better learn how to motivate yourself and others to take desired actions. Intrinsic motivation refers to reasons that originate inside the person. For example, if you have a deadline, you might be motivated to meet that deadline because doing so gives you a sense of accomplishment. Extrinsic motivation, on the other hand, involves motivation that originates outside of the individual. With this type of motivation, you would want to meet that deadline out of need to keep your job or to be rewarded for meeting the goal.

When you define motivation in these ways, you can see how complex the idea is and why it’s so important to start thinking about what is going to work with different people.

The Goal Setting Theory

Different research methods have been studying human motivation for decades, one of the more popular approaches that have been discovered is known as the goal setting theory. Basically, the idea here is that people are going to be motivated more frequently if they have some type of goal to reach. The beauty of this theory, besides the fact that it seems to be true, is that it can work on both intrinsic and extrinsic methods of motivation.

For example, you may have your own goal to reach so achieving that goal would be intrinsic motivation. On the other hand, if the company offers some type of reward as a goal that would be a good example of extrinsic motivation.

Importance of Motivation

Research has discovered that employees who are motivated do provide a wide range of benefits. You don’t have to define motivation to see it work effectively. For example, well-motivated workers strive for higher quality, increased productivity, and improved methods of doing the job. Clearly, these features have far reaching benefits for your business. They can also have far-reaching benefits for you. Whether intrinsic or extrinsic motivation is what works in your workplace, you can be sure that it will be beneficial.

Ways You Can Increase Workplace Motivation

  • Posted on July 1, 2009 at 9:04 pm

When it comes to the office, most people have the attitude: I just have to be here; I don’t want to be here. That negative attitude is clearly going to impact the quality of work that comes out of the office. You can’t make people who feel that way perform to their highest levels. The good news is there are ways to improve workplace motivation and to prevent this type of problem. Here are a few strategies:

Give Sincere Feedback

Too often, workplaces are sources of useless or nonexistent feedback. At one extreme, you may have a boss who demands a lot but offers no praise or commentary for a job well done. At the other end, you may have a boss who always says everything is wonderful and makes no distinction between quality work and drivel. Neither extreme is going to be effective workplace motivation.

Good feedback is sincere. When you see someone go above and beyond your expectations, you let them know. When someone provides excellent work, you tell them out. On the other hand, you also have to give constructive criticism from time to time. No one is going to be perfect and ignoring errors doesn’t make them work better it just makes them work oblivious to their errors.

Appreciate the Effort

No one wants to push themselves for a boss who doesn’t care. If you demand that your employees stay late to meet a deadline or come in on the weekends, let them know you appreciate their commitment to the company and to you. You might even want to order out for pizza or bring in doughnuts as a token of your gratitude. And don’t forget to show appreciation for things individual employees do as well. Knowing you care about what the staff is doing will improve workplace motivation enormously.

Model Behavior

Have you ever worked in an office that supposedly valued punctuality but the boss or the higher level managers always came into work whenever the mood struck? If so, you know the horrendous effect this behavior has on workplace motivation. Double standards in the office are rarely going to be praised by the rest of the staff. If you want your staff to act a certain way or live up to specific expectations, you need to model what you want. That’s the only way you’re going to get it.

Care about Others

The easiest way to improve workplace motivation is to legitimately care about your employees. If you just think of them as nameless faces slaving away under your command, chances are they’ve already picked up on your attitude and don’t care much for doing what you want. But when you do know their names, remember their birthdays, ask about specific projects they’re working on, and even say cheesy lines like “Say hi to Bob and the kids for me” at the end of the day, you will be improving their motivation.

The Goal of Team Motivation

  • Posted on July 1, 2009 at 9:04 pm

Your workforce is like a sports team. The success of everyone can be brought down by one bad performance. Like a team of professional athletes, your staff must be prepared to give 110% each day. Otherwise, the weakest link will ruin everything for the entire team. But how do you convince each worker to do their best when most employees dislike their jobs and are worried about getting a pink slip any day. The answer is effective team motivation.

What Doesn’t Work

First, we have to discuss some things that are simply not going to be effective in terms of team motivation. Don’t ask your employees to play silly trust-building activities or to sit around in a circle sharing their innermost feelings. These methods do not work. Instead, you have to dig deeper and truly learn about human motivation. After all, what works for one of your “players” is going to have a positive impact on them all.

One Negative Hurts the Positives

Maybe you’ve had this experience yourself. You’ve been at a job, a school, or maybe even at a store when someone starts up a conversation with you. They are very negative about everything they see. How do you start to feel? Whether you had a good impression or not, chances are you’re going to start feeling more negative about your environment. That’s the power of negative thought.

To combat this, you can’t afford not to be working on motivating your entire staff. If only a few people jump on the bandwagon, you’re still not going to see positive results.

Egoism Rules the Workplace

The biggest mistake most employers make when it comes to motivating employers is forgetting that workers – like the managers above them – are egoists. That means they are primarily motivated by what benefits them. If you give a worker an assignment, he or she doesn’t complete the assignment because you’re their friend or because they want you to look good to your supervisors. Instead, they are acting out of their own selfish desire to keep their job and get paid, as well as their desire not to be yelled at, reprimanded, or fired for not doing the work.

Once you recognize that everyone’s biggest motivation involves the idea of what’s in it for them you’ll have a much easier time getting everyone on board and of making a difference in how your office operates.

The Rules of the Team

Because you are a team and because team motivation is so important, you must take this approach seriously if you want it to work. Don’t be surprised if the rest of the team laughs or jokes about the idea behind your back. They are going to be resistant, but if you are persistent you will soon see a change in their attitudes. As they come to adopt the new approach to the team, more of the office workers will also begin to change their attitudes and soon you’ll be running a well-motivated operation.
