What are the risks of high dosage prescription medications?

  • Posted on August 25, 2010 at 5:21 pm

A woman I know has “complex regional pain syndrome” and I really don’t know much about this, I just know it’s a supposed pain in your arm or neck that the doctors can’t figure out. Kind of like fibro mialgia. Well, the doctors have her on hydrocodone, oxycdone, oxycontin, zanex, and countless other medications for vomiting, depression, insomnia, & other things. I know this for a fact. She also is a heavy alcohol drinker, mainly wine & beer, and she also smokes. I’m not sure of the dosage of anything except the oxycontin, which I know is 20 mg. She takes a large amount of pills 5 times a day. I know this can’t be good. She still drives. She also has a daughter and I don’t understand how she can take care of her. Also: She only weighs about 135 lbs. What are the risks of all of these things?

Headaches: The Great Productivity Killer

  • Posted on July 1, 2009 at 10:12 pm

Headaches are one of the greatest productivity killers. When you’re trying to get something done and a headache comes on, it’s game over. Even if you try to make it through, you’re not going to be nearly as productive and you’re likely going to be more miserable than ever. While it’s no fun, there are some natural and simple methods to cure your headache!

The Quick and Natural Way to Cure Headaches

The idea behind relieving a headache is to do it naturally and quickly. There are plenty of over-the-counter medications, but they have their own side effects that just create a new problem. If taken too frequently, headache medicines may even lose their effectiveness.

Here are some natural headache remedies that you can use to quickly eliminate that headache:

• If you’re at home, take a warm bath. Many headaches are caused by contracted muscles and a hot bath will relax those muscles. This is especially great for tension headaches.

• If it is a stress headache, exercising can relieve it. Taking a walk to increase blood circulation can help dramatically.

• If the headache is caused by dehydration, drinking water can help, but it may take several glasses until the problem is solved.

• Massaging the shoulders and neck can relieve a tension headache. This is because the tightened muscles causing the headache are loosened.

• For a caffeine, sinus, or allergy headache, a cold or hot compress can make the headache go away.

• Try to sleep the same hours every night. Too little or too much sleep can cause headaches. You also want to try to keep a consistent bedtime.

• Try not to sit, stand, or work in the same position for long periods of time. This can put strain on your back, shoulders, and neck. This strain can lead to a tension headache, so change position frequently to keep this from occurring.

• If bright lights make your head hurt, avoid them. If you already have a headache, try to sit in a room with minimal light. People with migraines tend to benefit from this technique.

• Reduce your intake of caffeine in order to avoid caffeine headaches. This can be one of the worst types of headaches. Unfortunately, there are many people who attempt to solve this headache by taking in more caffeine. The problem is that this type of headache tends to be caused by caffeine withdrawal, so it’s a catch 22.

• Avoid foods that trigger headaches. If you notice a pattern that your head hurts after eating a certain food, that is your sign to avoid it. Try eating organic fruits and vegetables because of their nutritional value and health benefits.

Since everyone is different, different remedies will work for different people. You may need to experiment to find out which one is going to work best for you. Once you find your remedy, stick to it.

How to Prevent Headaches

You can prevent headaches by controlling your stress levels, exercising, and eating balanced meals. All of these go hand-in-hand because stress can be relieved by exercising and eating healthy foods. It may require a lifestyle change, but you’ll not only feel better but you’ll relieve the majority of your headaches!

By implementing these changes and eliminating your headaches, you’ll boost your quality of life and get more done.

What Drugs Are Prescribed For Panic Attacks?

  • Posted on July 1, 2009 at 9:04 pm

If you are a person who has anxiety or panic attacks then you understand that panic attack medication is a way to use drugs to minimize or eliminate your anxiety symptoms. Of course we will assume you have already saw your doctor or have made arrangements to do so. The purpose of this article is to educate you on the available medications before your visit.

Benzodiazepine Medication

These drugs are commonly used for the relief of panic attack symptoms. Of course like any drug out there it does more then just one thing. It’s greatest benefit for relieving panic attacks is it’s ability to calm a person down. This in turn leads to minimizing or eliminating anxiety, agitation and ultimately anxiety attacks. Because they work fast they can be utilized to stop a current attack or “wave” of imminent attacks. They are not suited for long term use because they can lead to addiction or physical dependence.

SSRIs

Probably the second most prescribed drug for people suffering from anxiety and depression. Keep in mind that an above normal level of anxiety is what leads to panic attacks. These drugs help lessen anxiety and therefore panic attacks. Most doctors will use citalopram and paroxetine.

Drug Free Alternative

A relatively new therapy coined “Cognitive Behavioral Therapy” (cbt) is commonly referred to as the leading non drug treatment for panic attack sufferers. The idea behind this therapy is that panic attacks are caused by a fear of panic attacks occurring. If you remove the irrational fear then there is nothing left to cause the panic attack.

Cognitive behavioral therapy recognizes this medical concept which is also called a “positive forward feedback loop”. With CBT, you learn how to recognize the very early stages of your anxiety spiraling out of control.

With CBT you can modify your thinking at these early stages and apply rationality and eliminate exaggeration. Over time, your way of thinking is modified to that or a healthy person without panic.

How To Treat Panic Attacks – Take Back Control Of Your Life.

  • Posted on July 1, 2009 at 7:57 pm

In my job as a Paramedic I am often asked how to treat panic attacks. Panic attacks are extremely frightening. They seem to come out of the blue, completely at random, make people feel powerless, out of control, and as if they are about to die or go mad. Many people experience this problem, but many also learn to cope and, eventually, to overcome it successfully.

A panic attack is an exaggeration of the body’s normal response to fear, stress or excitement. When faced with a situation seen as potentially threatening, the body automatically gears itself up for danger, by producing quantities of adrenalin for ‘fight or flight’. This would have prepared our cave man ancestors to fight or run away from danger, but it’s much less appropriate to the stresses we come across today. Symptoms of panic attacks include difficulty in breathing, chest pain, feeling faint or dizzy, nausea and tingling in the hands, feet and lips. All of these symptoms are extremely frightening but can be overcome.

But how to treat panic attacks? Traditionally, repeated panic attacks have been treated with medications but increasingly, Doctors are realising that this is not the most effective option. Increasingly, they are turning to more natural methods using psychotherapy and cognitive behaviour therapy. These methods are not nearly as scary as they sound! They simply look at issues you may have had in the past that may be triggering the attacks and teach you methods to control these emotions.

One of the most successful methods in recent years teaches you to recognise the beginning of an episode and how to treat panic attacks yourself. With over 34,000 people having tried the system and with exceptional results this is a system which can help you overcome panic attacks for good.

James Thompson is a Paramedic in the UK and has treated thousands of panic attack victims. He has personally tested this highly effective method for treating panic attacks. Try it now and get your life back.

Depression Alternatives – We Are On High Alert For Depression

  • Posted on July 1, 2009 at 7:36 pm

I bet you didn’t know that of all the Americans suffering from some kind of depressive disorder, only about 33% seek or receive treatment! That leaves a big black hole in every sense of the word as the ravages caused by depression are an enormous cost to the economy, society and individuals like you and me. Depression, if left untreated can lead to violence, shoplifting and of course suicide. Yet depression alternatives have received little attention in the medical press simply because there are too many vested interests in maintaining the grip that big pharma has on our society and they have brainwashed us into accepting medications which are questionable in many ways.

Depression is one of the main causes of suicides in this country. Army suicides are increasing and recently the spotlight has been turned on military personnel to find out the possible reasons for this. One of the main reasons cited for the cause of depression is problems in relationships. But this does not just affect the Army, it goes right across society as the difficulties in finding a loving caring partner and maintaining that relationship in the long term can present enormous problems to individuals. This is another reason why looking at depression alternatives such as finding a depression help group, can be a great help.

Diet and its role in our moods and its effects on our brains has largely been ignored or simply relegated to the weight loss industry, rather than seeing it as one of the alternative treatments for depression. What a mistake! There is a mountain of research which has been done by scientists and nutritionists which shows that a simple Vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to depression and other mental disorders. Dementia is another one in that category which is at the top of the list. They have shown that the B group of vitamins are vital in producing of SAM-e which is a natural anti-depressant element which is present in every cell in our bodies. Other depression alternatives include EFT (Emotional Freedom Therapy) which concentrates on our feelings which in turn affect our thoughts. Most therapy starts with the thoughts rather than our feelings. This form of therapy has not received enough attention as one of the alternative treatments for depression.

Herbal remedies have been shown to be just as effective as one of the best depression alternatives in various studies, and in Germany, St John’s Wort was shown to be also effective in treating MDD (major depressive disorder). The NIMH is now preparing trials to see if this herb can indeed be effective and safe in mild to moderate depression. Discover more in the link below.
