Achieving goals we set for ourselves is not always an easy task. Some people set goals that are not easily attainable by any standards and this is admirable. What we’re focusing on here are people that don’t reach goals they set due to a flaw in their action plans. A person’s mindset also plays a big role in pursuing goals and objectives. Generally there are already enough obstacles between you and your goals so make it more difficult by improper planning? By identifying those areas we unknowingly overlook we should be better prepared to successfully achieve our goals.

Here are 5 common mistakes we can make that can sabotage our efforts to achieve goals we’ve set for ourselves.

Defined Plan of Action – Roadmap

Goal setting is great but it is not something that you can expect positive results from without establishing a plan. For every objective you pursue you must know how it is you are going to achieve it. Without a plan your goals are really nothing more than dreams.

Precise and Focused Actions

Approaching your goals in a ‘scattershot’ fashion is both a sloppy and ineffective way to successfully complete or pursue anything.

The plan you established to meet your goals should be a well thought out step by step process that will help you meet every objective to attain your goals. Every action you take should be a deliberate action as already pre-established in your plan. These actions will also be arranged in such an order so that each one will bring you that much closer to the end results you seek.

It is important that you maintain the order of your planned actions for you to gain the quickest results in the most efficient manner.

Identify Your Motivation

For everything you may ‘want’ there is always a reason for this want. The stronger it is you may want or desire something the more probable it is you’ll get it. Goals are no different insofar as the stronger your desire to reach your goals the likelier it will happen.

When you establish goals be clear as to why you’ve set them in the first place. By identifying your reasons they will serve as the motivation to keep your drive alive until your objectives have been met. If your want is not strong enough it’s likely the goals won’t be attained.

Lack of Positive Attitude

Why would anyone set a goal they didn’t think they could reach? Believe it or not it happens all the time. If you doubt yourself in your pursuit you are actually working AGAINST your own efforts to realize these objectives. If you believe or know you can be successful this alone will give you the resolve needed to make it happen.

Self doubt will only lead to the need for more effort and likely frustration and failure!

When I speak of experience here I’m not necessarily referring to the kind that yields successful results. Trial and error is one of the most effective ways to learn ANYTHING! It is not at all uncommon for many to try and fail a number of times before being successful at something. Do you remember learning to ride a bike?

Sometimes lacking this type of ‘learning’ experience makes it a little more difficult to reach our desired results. Often times knowing ‘what not to do’ is just as valuable as knowing how to do it!

Achieving goals is something to be admired and a rewarding accomplishment for anyone. Just as admirable is setting the goals and objectives in the first place. Careful attention however needs to be given to your own mindset and the necessary action plans you’ll need to reach goals that you set. If this important stage of your goal setting is overlooked you’re dooming yourself to failure before you even start.

Momentum And Goals – How To Build On An Inspired Start And Keep It Going

When you’re inspired you get a tremendous boost to your energy and motivation. This is a great way to get started towards your goal, yet you also need momentum to keep going to reach it.

You can find momentum literally in DETAIL – one factor for each letter of the word. You can use this as a checklist anytime to build and maintain momentum. Score each factor out of 10 (where 10 is perfect):

* Direction

Is your goal still appealing and relevant? Does it have the magnetic attraction to pull you towards it?

If your score is less than 8, you need to clarify your goal. Maybe the size is wrong – if it is too overwhelming, break it into smaller chunks. If it is too small to attract you, make it bigger and bolder.

Remember Michelangelo: “The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark”

* Energy

Check your energy levels. If your score 7 or under, where else is your energy going? Beware the energy vampires.

Low energy can be a sign of working outside of your strengths – what can you share or delegate?

Working with your strengths brings new energy – how can you do more of this?

* Time

Where is this goal on your priority scale? Is it getting enough time to ‘stay alive’? Procrastination is a huge energy drain.

If you score less than 8, the challenge is to find how you can spend more time on this goal. This is a subject in itself (!) so remember that the minimum time is that needed to maintain momentum. Therefore regular inputs of time are as important as the quantity.

If you don’t increase the overall time you spend, how could you use the time you are already spending to build greater momentum?

* Accountability

You may know that making yourself accountable for progress can be a big help in maintaining momentum.

This accountability can be to yourself (checklists, graphs, targets etc) and/or to others. It can be formal (for example, it’s usually a key feature in coaching) or informal. Generally the more people you are accountable to, the stronger the effect.

If you score less than 7, how could you make yourself more accountable?

* Incentives

How well do you use incentives and rewards for milestones on the journey? What celebrations do you make when you reach interim stages?

If you score under 8, there is much scope here. Incentives are inherently personal so you will have an idea of what could work for you.

Experiment with frequency – once a day, once a week, once a month – rewards need to be often enough to assist momentum without taking over so that more time is spent on the rewards than the progress you want!!

* Learning

How well are you learning from progress so far? How effectively are you using the feedback available?

If you score anything under 10 here, there are opportunities to tune your operation. There is scope for working smarter.

Ask : what is working well? What could be working better? What adjustments could you make?

Fake It Until You Make It

In 1987, I was hired by Allstate Insurance to present a motivational seminar for their sales team. One of their executives saw me speak on TV and thought I could help his team. This was my first motivational speech. Funny thing was that I was dead broke in the time and would be “motivating” a group of salesmen earning six-figure incomes. But, in the spirit of “fake it until you make it,” I created a 20-minute presentation mixing martial arts and motivation. For instance, I’d have one of my students attack me and I’d take away his balance by sweeping him to the floor. I’d then turn to the audience to describe the importance of balance in life. I was way out of my league, but they loved it. Allstate doubled my pay to $1,000 and booked six more seminars. More than the money, the confidence I gained from the experience was life changing. Had I not been willing to fake it I would have no chance to make it.

Part of my pay that day was a room at the downtown Hilton in St. Petersburg, Florida. This was the nicest hotel I’d even been in at the time.

Even though I lived just two miles away; I opted to spend the night at the Hilton. That evening, I sat in the lounge, creating list after list of new goals for myself.

The response to the seminar was so positive that it catapulted my confidence to new levels and I made these goals with a new sense of daring and ambition. This was a major emotional threshold in my life. Had I sat down a couple of days earlier to make a list of goals, they would have been far less ambitious than the list I made that night in the Hilton.
While you may not have yet had an experience such as speaking for a group of executives, what would be the equivalent for you in your life? Is there a short-term goal or accomplishment that you seek that would give you the same confidence boost? Here is a little technique that will help you to get that confidence boost right now. It’s meant to be done with your eyes closed and relaxed so read the next two paragraphs and then close your eyes and walk through the process.

I want you to name that goal or if the goal is really large, name the first step and then repeat this process for each step towards accomplishing that goal. For instance, if you want to change careers, you may want to start with taking a class or a seminar in the field you want to transition to. Second would be to get whatever license or certification that may be required. The third step might be to make the transition. Write these steps down or fix them in your mind right now.

Close your eyes and project your mind forward and imagine that you have accomplished that first step. What does that feel like? See yourself accomplishing your goal. Listen to the congratulations from your friends and family. I want you to feel it, see it, hear it, taste it, and smell the sweet smell of success for yourself. Drink it all in for a moment before moving on to the next step and the next step until you have accomplished your goal.
How does that feel? Pretty good I bet. This projection technique is a powerful way to motivate you and stimulate your sub-conscious mind. It attracts you to the activities required to accomplish the goal.

This works best when you isolate yourself for part of a day and surround yourself in an environment of wealth. The best place to do that for me is to do my goal setting in a nice hotel. When I did this that first night in the Hilton, I just felt rich by being around wealthier people. Mind you at the time, if you had $100 in the bank, you were richer than me, so it didn’t take much, but I think you get the idea.

The opulence of the surroundings convinced me that I would go to a nice hotel each year to do my goal setting. I’ve done this now in Dubai, London, Paris, Hawaii, Germany, Aspen, Grand Cayman and other fabulous locations and you can too.

Spend at least one day in a five star hotel reviewing this year and planning for the next. Even if you don’t stay at the hotel, do this in the lobby or lounge. The strategy is to surround yourself with privilege and an atmosphere of wealth to help you formulate your goals for the New Year.

Here some simple annual goals to set:((

1. Improve your net worth by 10%
2. Increase personal income by 20%((
3. Pay off all debt other than your mortgage
4. Pay off your mortgage (I’ve never had a mortgage last more than three years. My current home is worth nearly two-million dollars)

Another enjoyable goal projection technique is one of my favorites. On weekends realtors open houses to visitors. Go visit million dollar homes. I did this for years. I’d walk in and kind of pretend this was my house. I’d take a deep breath and smell the smell of a millionaire’s home. I’d imagine I was coming home from work and heading for the hot tub with a cool drink to relax and enjoy my surroundings.

Rich glossy magazines like the Robb Report are also ways you can visit fabulous homes without having to leave your own. The purpose of these goal projections exercises is to stimulate your sub-conscious mind to pull you in the direction that you want to go in. If you’ve never experienced wealth or set a goal and accomplished it, then it may be difficult to imagine yourself getting there. These techniques create an internal sensation that you are already there. Remember, the sub-conscious doesn’t know the difference between what is real and what is imagined. This is a step towards creating a new reality for your self.

Ever had a bad day?

I’m sure you’ve had a day when everything seems to be going wrong. Your car won’t start, your boss is screaming at you about your impending deadline, or you just found out that your girlfriend became a lesbian!

Well i don’t know about you, but the most common reactions people have in dealing with a bad day is to either keep all the frustration and anger inside, or to just curse and swear at every little thing. These people go about their day absolutely radiating negative and somewhat aggressive vibes. They snap at their children over insignificant things like leaving breadcrumbs on the floor, or when someone cuts them off while driving on the road, they go utterly ballistic, screaming every known expletive known to man and just bashing the wheel like they were Chris Brown and the honk was Rihanna.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to tell you that such behavior isn’t healthy and that there are better ways to deal with your bad day. It is also pretty obvious that you aren’t going to be motivated to do anything being in such a foul mood. So instead of feeling all sulky and angry when things don’t go your way, try what the kid above is doing and just SMILE !! =)

Smiling releases endorphins (not some new age dolphin) which are chemicals which make you feel better and happy. It has also been scientifically proven that smiling not only relieves stress, it also lowers your blood pressure. Furthermore, smiling also makes you more attractive to others which also helps to increase your motivation as well, but we’ll touch on that another time. Therefore, to counter all the negative feelings that your bad day will bring, and to motivate yourself towards your goals.

How to Improve Your Child’s Study Skills by Discovering Their Learning Style

Parents, if your child is struggling in school, or even in just one class, this does not mean that your child is not extremely intelligent. Everyone is different. Each person has different opinions, tastes, and motivations. As a result, not everyone learns in the same style.

Techniques for studying that work wonders for one student, may be completely ineffective with another student. This does not mean that one student is necessarily smarter than another, merely that each student learns differently. It is critical that instructors, parents, and tutors know the learning style of their students in order to maximize a student’s understanding of the material being covered. Otherwise, a very bright intelligent student may get discouraged and lose motivation to succeed in school, simply because the information is not being presented to them in the most effective manner.

Unfortunately, due to large classroom sizes, overworked instructors, and overworked parents it has become very difficult to reach every student effectively in a classroom type setting. Since many instructors also have one learning style that they are most familiar with, they tend to teach towards that style and inadvertently miss students with other learning styles. That is why it is so important for parents, tutors, and the students themselves to know the learning style of their children so they can help the student achieve academic success.

There are four distinct learning styles. Some students fit neatly into one category and some students may process information in a variety of ways. There is no ‘better or worse’ learning style, just different styles.

The Visual / Verbal Learning Style
Students with this learning style learn when information is presented visually and in a written language format. Instructors who use a blackboard, overhead, or presentation to emphasize and outline their lessons are most effective at reaching these students. Additionally, these students can benefit greatly from textbooks and notes. The best way to study for these individuals is usually alone in a quiet room where they can visualize the information in their “mind’s eye” to remember the lesson.

The Visual / Nonverbal Learning Style
Students with this learning style learn when information is presented visually and in a picture or design format. Instructors who use visual aids (film, video, maps, charts, diagrams, etc) are most effective at reaching these students. These students tend to benefit from pictures and diagrams in textbooks. The best way to study for these individuals is usually alone in a quiet room where they can visualize a picture of the lesson in their mind.

The Tactile / Kinesthetic Learning Style
Students with this learning style learn when they have to actively participate in the lesson. Instructors who incorporate in-class demonstrations, “hands on” student learning experiences, and field work outside of the classroom tend to be most effective at reaching these students. Physically engaging in “hands on” activity tends to be the best way for these students to learn the material.

The Auditory / Verbal Learning Style
Students with this learning style learn when information is presented in an auditory fashion such as an oral presentation. Instructors who utilize lecture time and encourage group discussions are the most effective at reaching these students. The best way to study for these individuals is by listening to recorded audio tapes or by interacting with others in a listening/speaking exchange so that the material can be remembered by ‘hearing’ the way someone told the information out loud.

Students who are struggling in school can usually benefit from one-on-one personal help with someone who understands their learning style and will tailor their teaching style to the students needs. With one-on-one teaching an instructor, parent, or tutor can easily modify their lesson to suit the needs of that individual child, which is nearly impossible to do in a large classroom setting. Once a child’s learning style is discovered, that child can easily achieve academic success, raising their motivation and confidence in themselves.
