How did you toilet train overnight?

My son will be 3 years old at the end of April. I really want to be “pull-up free”. He has been fully potty trained during the daytime, both pooping and peeing, with no accidents since he was 21 months old. But at night we still use pull-ups. He usually pee’s like crazy overnight. He used to wake up at 5 or 6 am because he had wet through it. Now he is getting better and sometimes goes through the night dry, but sometimes pee’s it a little still. Is this just something I should wait out and he will do it in his own time, since he is making progress?
I have been told and told that boys just “do this” and pee a lot more and more uncontrollably than girls. I am thinking this may be true, as my daughter will be 2 at the beginning of May, and has been totally potty trained since 18 months old, day and night.

I have heard people say that they simply do not give their child anything to drink anywhere from 1-3 hours before bed! My son still likes a drink before bed, plus I can’t expect him to go to bed after not eating or drinking for 1-3 hours! He eats all day long right up until bed time, and he likes to drink with his food. This works for us, as he has a fast metabolism and is super high energy, so he needs all of this. He eats healthy and is 39 inches 33 lbs, so I don’t want to hear that he doesn’t need that much food/drink, because he does. He goes all day long, running and playing, and if he doesn’t eat right before bed, he does not sleep through the night.

So how did you potty train overnight? Or did you just let it happen in it’s own time?
In the last 2 hours before bed, he usually has about 8 ounces to drink total over that time, and he does use the toilet every night right before bed.
