Your Health and Fitness Should Be Your High Priority Goal

We all take our health for granted until we get sick. People who claim they don’t have time for proper exercise and self-care find themselves hospitalized or in bed sick and out of commission for weeks or months. When our bodies force us, we have to make time for illness. Suddenly our health becomes much more valuable to us after we lose it.

But why wait until this happens? Take a moment and think about your future and all that you hope to do in all areas of your life. Isn’t your good health an essential component for the achievement of those goals? Does it make good sense to you that unless you take care of your health, you cannot take care of business, family and other interests?

A proper exercise program is absolutely necessary to ensure good health but exercising seems to remain a low priority for many. If you have difficulty finding time for your exercise program, you are not alone as a perceived lack of time is the most common reason people fail to stick with an exercise program.

Too often we get caught up in the short term demands, the little things that have to be done somehow do get done, but the larger, really important issues like our health can get put on indefinite hold. Ask yourself, if you are too busy now to make exercise and your health a priority, when in the near future will you be less busy? Will it be weeks, months, or years? Will it be when the kids leave home, when you retire, or some other obscure reason (excuse)?

If you are waiting for a better time to make exercise a priority, you may wait too long, and it may be too late to regain health once it has been taken away from you.

Many busy people manage to find the time to exercise regularly. It would be fair to say someone who is busier than you is exercising right now!

But how do they do it? The answer to this is they make their health and fitness a high priority goal. They focus on the multitude of benefits they receive from their commitment to their exercise program. Although exercise helps prevent chronic disease and disability, it also helps control body weight, slows the aging process, boosts energy, keeps us mentally healthy and helps manage daily stress levels.

People who exercise regularly make it a habit and part of their daily and weekly routine; it is totally programmed into the day. The day would not be complete without it.

Early in the morning is the most popular time. If you want to exercise consistently and long term (like the rest of your life), exercise in the morning, before the rest of the world tries to derail you. The odds will be greatly in your favor as over 90% of people who exercise ‘consistently’, do so first thing in the morning.

People ask how can I be healthy and avoid all of these diseases without actually having to exercise? Is there a way that I can get the benefits of this activity without having to move my body? And the answer to that is simply, no, you have to actually do it if you want to get the benefits from it.

No one can do it for you, no prescription drugs, no surgical procedure can give you the same health benefits that your body would create on its own when you engage in a proper exercise program. Become your own personal trainer and get yourself going so you can experience the positive health results proper exercise offers.

With the extra energy and vitality that ‘being strong and fit’ provides, you will become a more productive person, not just at work, but in all areas of your life. When you are more energetic and feel great, you make better decisions, and find more creative solutions to problems. You will be much more fun to be with, and you will have more to give to those you care about.

Never Put Exercise on Hold For Something Much Less Important

Sometimes when we are really busy such as having an overwhelming amount of work in front of us that we put our exercise needs on hold until we feel we have caught up and are on top of the task we give so much priority too. We believe that we need that extra hour of time much more than we need the exercise. This sort of thinking can go on for weeks, months, years or even decades.

Without even realizing it you have made an important career change and have made a conscious choice about putting this very important self care need to the side. This will not add to the quality of your life but take it away. Your exercise needs should not be the first thing to go when things get busy but the absolute last. When you are on your death bed in the last throes of life that is when you put your exercise needs aside.

We used to think that exercise was an optional extra and we would approach it like it was a choice. As long as we weren’t sick we thought we were “healthy” and didn’t really need to exercise. If something like our workload increased it was okay to put it aside and take care of that task first and foremost. How on earth could we possibly think that catching up with a little bit of work is more important than our long term health?

It is not until you accept and believe that your exercise needs when met will most definitely change your life for the better. How could you think that you could perform better at work without it? How absurd to think that you could function optimally in any area of your life without proper exercise.

For all of the ten million pieces of advice about how to make exercise regular in your life, the very best advice is to realize you will not get the life you want without it. Whenever you are thinking about not going to the gym tell yourself a little story such as that piece of advice. That will get your butt there and powering into your exercise program.

After all it is well proven that exercise is an essential part of a successful career as well as part of a good life. Exercise boosts your IQ and increases resilience in difficult times and is often the difference between success and failure in getting what we want.

Going to the gym will change your life but to be able to get it in regularly requires a careful mental shift. First you clearly prioritize what is important to you and why.
Then you pick specific times and specific places where it will take place. Then you convince yourself that doing it is not negotiable.

There is clear evidence to show that people who make one conscious change – such as going to the gym 2 -3 times per week – unconsciously change many other positive things in their life. Making that one decision has a ripple affect throughout your life improving things like making better food choices and getting enough sleep.

A proper exercise program that includes at least 60% strength training exercise is the most important thing you can do for a healthy mind and body. It affects how you feel physically, mentally and emotionally, how you look, how you function and contributes to your quality of life. Never ever let yourself believe that a extra hour at work each day could ever make up for removing this from your life.

Get Active and Reduce Risk of an Early Death by 50 Percent

Simple fact – if you are over 30 and don’t exercise, you cannot possibly have a high quality of life and in fact are risking an early death. In your youth, exercise is largely about appearance and performance. Disease. illness and dysfunction are simply too remote to fuel your desire to become and stay active.

But, as you move into your 30s, 40s and beyond, suddenly there is a realization that your body is not indestructible anymore and is starting to show signs of wear and tear. Life’s grind begins to impact you in ways not experienced earlier in life and the snow balling effect can range from mildly intrusive to massively disruptive.

Increased responsibilities in life, coupled with longer workdays often lead to higher levels of chronic stress. And, tighter schedules lead many to abandon an exercise program as something that just takes up too much time. So, it takes a back seat to building a career and taking care of a family. The problem is though, when you de-prioritize exercise with increasing age, the negative impact reaches further and far beyond what you ever imagined.

Indeed, inactivity can stifle and endanger nearly every part of your life…

Inactivity weakens your immune system – Lack of exercise slows down cleansing the body of toxins and waste products weakening the immune system.

An increase in blood flow associated with proper exercise helps to circulate antibodies along with white blood cells necessary to fight infection. This provides our bodies with an early warning system to ward off potentially damaging germs and viruses. A healthy immune system helps the body fight diseases such as cancer.

Inactivity slows your metabolism. After age 30, we begin to literally lose lean muscle tissue from our body at an alarming rate. And, since muscle is metabolically active tissue (it burns the most calories), every pound of muscle lost lowers your metabolism and increases the likelihood of becoming overweight or obese. Exercise, more specifically, strength training is the only way to stop this happening. Rebuilding and maintaining lost muscle tissue reactivates your metabolic rate (the rate your body burns fuel).

Inactivity increases the risk of heart-attack. A sedentary lifestyle is now considered as dangerous a risk for developing heart disease as smoking. Even people who have had a heart attack can increase their chances of survival if they change their habits to include a proper exercise program.

We are more concerned these days with living a long and healthy life, rather than just living longer. If you do not exercise regularly, or have an inactive lifestyle, you are increasing your risk of many life threatening preventable diseases and the more likely you are to die younger.

While, inactivity leads to a downward spiral and a slow decline in your ability to fully live life, proper exercise that includes strength training exercise can profoundly enhance your life, lifestyle and even performance at work. You can also earn yourself a 50% reduction in the risk of an early death. Sounds like a pretty good deal don’t you think?

Talk to Your Doctor Before Becoming Sedentary

You hear it all the time, “Be sure to get permission from your doctor before you begin an exercise program”. But how often do you hear, “Be sure to talk to your doctor before becoming sedentary?”

A sedentary life is defined as being physically inactive both at work and at home and failing to participate in a proper exercise program for at least 20 continuous minutes at least three times a week. If you plan on living a life like this here are some hazards to your health you should be aware of:

You more than double your risk of getting diabetes. Vigorous physical activity helps prevent insulin resistance, the underlying cause of adult onset diabetes. A recent study showed that for every 2 hours a person watched TV daily (a dangerous sedentary pursuit), their risk of diabetes increased 14%.

You increase your risk of cancer. Sedentary or inactive people are 30 – 40% more likely to develop cancer. One study showed a 40% decrease in cancer mortality in high-fit persons compared to low-fit persons.

A sedentary lifestyle increases your risk of a heart attack or stroke. It is no surprise to anyone that couch potatoes have the highest risk of a heart attack. Exercise strengthens the heart and its pipes and keeps them in good health protecting them from disease.

Lack of physical activity accelerates muscle tissue loss in adults and eventually adequate strength to function properly is also lost. This leads to disability and dependence on others. The best way to stay out of the nursing home in the future is to get regular strength training exercise now!

Inactivity weakens your bones. Just like muscles, bones require regular weight bearing exercise to maintain their mineral content and strength. Every year we get older (past age 25), the bones grow a little weaker and this process is much faster in inactive persons. Strength training is the best exercise for bone health.

Inactive people are more likely to become depressed. Physical activity is a good mood elevator. Staying strong and fit is good for your mental health as well as your physical health.

Your immune system is likely to be weakened. People who get regular vigorous physical activity have the best functioning immune system. It is this system that combats diseases such as cancer and illnesses such as the flu and colds.

A no exercise lifestyle makes you more likely to gain excess body fat. Studies show that exercising three times per week cuts the risk of obesity by 24%. In our current society, if you don’t exercise, you are highly likely to become overweight joining two-thirds of the population now also considered overweight, which leads to a host of other health problems.

After reading all of the hazards of an inactive lifestyle and if you are still considering being sedentary this year, be sure to make an appointment with your physician. You are embarking on a very dangerous journey and you will need medical clearance before you begin. Ask your doctor if it is safe for you to proceed. If it isn’t, you could consider getting started on a proper exercise program that includes strength training exercise and you may get a whole new outlook on life.
