How do NC tenents protect themselves from harrassing landlords?

  • Posted on November 26, 2010 at 7:24 am

We rent a single dwelling cottage in NC. We pay on time. THe landlord changes the rules on a regular basis – verbally not in writing. Gossips about all of her tenants. Censures who can and cannot visit. Told us is the beginning we could entertain and have out of town guests. Then told us no hispanics and no children. Even though she had the parent of the visiting child sign a waiver of liability. The child was well behaved and caused no problems. But the day before he left the landlord said no more children. On July 30th, she said she wanted us to leave by September 1. Landlord knew our young adult daughter was coming to stay for a long term. Gave her directions over the phone when she got lost, offered ideas for job hunting, etc. After she was here less than a week – she came to our house intoxicated stating that if she was going to be here any longer, she would demand $250 more in rent. (We have already paid our August rent) We signed a one page informal lease and never received a copy. And this was only after we had 3 hispanics over for dinner during the first week (stating – I thought you were good people). We never received a copy.

How do I protect a mentally ill stepdaughter who is underage from her mother?

  • Posted on October 20, 2010 at 6:20 pm

My stepdaughter is 17 and has a long history of mental illness. CPS has been called several times on her mother who continues to have boyfriends over that sexually abuse my stepdaughter. Those boyfriends of her mother are also doing meth right in front of her. She ended up running away because her mother expected her daughter to have sex with those guys so she could get free drugs. My husband has a joint custody arrangement and the police brought her over our house. I don’t know what to do to keep her mother from coming to get her. We filed a police report and she told the officers what her mother’s boyfriend had done I don’t know how to protect her. What about a mental health advocate? Since she is severely mentally ill would this be an option? She is 5 months away from being 18 so to go to court at this stage would be a waste of money. It would probably take 5 months to bring this to court. Please give your best advice since I am trying to protect this girl from a horrible home life.

How can my daughter protect herself against her drug addicted husband?

  • Posted on August 2, 2010 at 10:19 am

My daughter is caught up in a situation with her husband that is a really bad one. She works an excellent job and has a good position in her own office. She married a man that was a good guy but has turned to crack cocaine. They have two precious little baby girls in the house. One is six months old and one is four years old. There are two other children from her former marriage.
Her husband disappears for three or four days to do his crack and calls her when he runs out of money and comes home and says she cannot throw him out because it is his house too. She says when he comes in he is coming down from the drug. She has called the police and they say they can’t make him leave because it indeed his home too.
Does anyone know what her rights are on this issue. She is ready to file papers, but in the mean time, she wants him out.
Has anyone experienced such a thing and what can she do? Thanks
