Are Goals Damaging?

JOHN DI LEMME ON “GOALS ARE DAMAGING”

Can you relate to setting goals and not achieving them? Have you ever been frustrated by trying to set goals when you know in your heart that you will never reach them? You even say to yourself, “Who am I kidding? I will never accomplish this goal.” That’s why I’m here to tell you that goals are truly damaging for your future, because you beat yourself up over never reaching those goals and eventually just give up.

On the other hand, goals are very important. Don’t let me confuse you with this just read this carefully. Goals are imperative when you have a strong “Why” in place. Let’s parallel this to a ten-story glass building that is shiny and beautiful to the eye. It towers over the city and creates the skyline. Now let’s imagine that the building was built by a group of amateur carpenters in one day and had a poor foundation. It looked very nice, but wasn’t solid. One day a little bird flew smack into that building, and guess what happened? That little, tiny sparrow knocked down that massive building that looked amazingly strong and powerful from the outside. Why? The foundation was pathetic, and there were no true roots to hold that building in place. No one paid the price for that building to hold its own in the real world despite how it looked to the average person.

Let’s tie that into your goals. Your “Why” is your foundation and your roots. What is a “Why”? It is simply your purpose for living and your ultimate goal in life. Your “Why” must be stronger and bigger than you are right now! You must internalize your “Why” and know exactly “Why” you do what you do everyday to reach your goals. Too many people have set the goals of making a lot of money. Can you relate to that? Have you ever set the goal of making a certain amount of money in a month, and then at the end of the month you haven’t made a dime more? Here’s the reason why. You must know “Why” you want to earn that amount of money for that month. It’s not the money that drives you…it’s your “Why”! What are you going to do with that money? Pay your car payment, donate it to your church, buy your child a new toy…”Why” have you set that financial goal for that month? Another thing, you should never set a goal of “making” a certain amount of money in a month. Instead, after you know “Why” you are setting that financial goal, then set a goal of EARNING that money not MAKING that money. Remember, no one paid that price for that beautiful ten-story building, and it fell. You must be willing to pay the price and EARN your way to your goal.

Let’s go over this again. Goals are damaging to your future. If you don’t have your “Why” in place, then you have no foundation to support you as you head down your success path to completing that goal. Without that foundation, you will give up and be discouraged from ever setting goals for yourself again. It doesn’t matter what type of goal – physical, financial, social, etc. – you must know “Why” you are going pay the price to achieve that goal. If not, then that goal could damage your life instead of assisting you in ultimately achieving success that you’ve always dreamed about. Commit today to develop your “Why” before setting any more goals!

Let me share 3 questions with you that will help you “Find Your Why”.

1. If you did not have to worry about finances or going to your job on Monday morning, then what would you do?
2. If you had so much money that you had to give it away, what would you do with it? Who would you give it to and why?
3. Do you enjoy life? If so, why? If not, then why not? Remember, your past does not control you! Your future should drive you, because you see yourself successful!

After you develop your “Why” and set your goals, you will encounter obstacles and challenges like that little bird that hit that huge building. If your “Why” is strong enough, then unlike that building you will stand firm against whatever tries to stop you from achieving that goal. You will not be knocked down!

Remember, goals are damaging if you don’t have a foundational “Why” in place. I challenge you today to ask yourself those three questions, develop your “Why” and then set your goals.

Set Your Intentions for an Incredible Year!

  • Posted on July 1, 2009 at 9:05 pm

What kind of year will this be for you? I’ve already decided I’ll help more people live abundantly this year than ever before. Have you taken the time to set your intentions for the year yet?

My clients are constantly amazed at the results they get by simply setting their intentions each week. It’s so powerful because it allows them to see the many resources and opportunities the Universe provides to help them live those intentions. In fact, in the words of Sandy Forster, “When you set an intention, when you commit, the entire Universe conspires to make it happen.”

What would you like your year to be like? What needs to happen so you can look back and say, “Now, that was an incredible year!” What would need to happen in each area of your life — Relationships, Career, Health, Money, Spirituality, and Personal Development?

If you follow these three guidelines as you set your intentions, you are on your way to achieving them!

Make sure you’re passionate about your goals. Often, when people struggle to meet their goals, the real issue is that their goals simply aren’t very meaningful to them. They are the “shoulds” that people pick up from others in their life – their parents, their boss, or their friends, for example. The problem with setting goals based on what others want for you is that those others often don’t know your mission. Only you’ve been given that. So as you set your goals, ask yourself: How will this intention help me achieve my purpose on this planet?”

Share them. In the words of Deepak Chopra, “Intentions compressed into words enfold magical power.” In one of my Abundance Power groups, each group member shared their highest visions of themselves while the rest of the group simply felt the energy of that person’s vision. It was an incredibly powerful experience for all, and those group members are truly becoming what they envisioned!

It’s so important to share your intentions with others, in a way that they can see, and feel them. This makes them more real for you, and it allows you to be in the right vibration for creating or attracting what you need to achieve them. Share them with your coach, your mastermind group, a friend, or your partner.

Revisit them regularly. Plan to review your 2009 intentions on a monthly or quarterly basis. Celebrate what you’ve accomplished so far! And make sure that those intentions still make sense for you. Don’t be afraid to change something you’ve decided does not help you achieve your vision. By revisiting your intentions regularly, you’ll stay on track and have an excuse to celebrate everything you’re doing right to meet them!

Take some time this week to set your intentions for the coming year. Be sure to include all six areas of your life (Relationships, Career, Health, Money, Spirituality, and Personal Development). Measure your intentions against your higher purpose – the reason that you are here on Earth. Share them with someone you trust. And remember to review them on a regular basis!

You are on your way to an incredible year!

The Definitive Guide to Achieving Your Goals

  • Posted on July 1, 2009 at 9:05 pm

We all have goals that we’d like to achieve, that we’d like to attain. We all want the pleasure of knowing that we had the confidence to change ourselves through taking on and conquering difficult feats.

For example, we set goals every year on January 1st, thinking that this will be the day that everything changes. We say, “I’ll lose 15 pounds”, or “I’ll get a 4.0 this quarter”, or even “I’ll make ‘X amount of money’”. Then, not even midway through the year, we quit. We give up. We fall back in the rut that drove us to change in the first place. Suddenly the challenge that was meant to adorn us with praise is suddenly dragging us down into the depths of ‘hard work’. When we actually have to sit down and devise a plan of attack in order to reach our goals, the majority of us want to quit. Having done this before myself, I can sympathize with that. You have been living in a pattern of regularity that seemed almost effortless and it’s hard to change that pattern by just setting a goal for yourself. But realize that just wanting to change is not enough. You can tell all your friends and relatives about your new plan to backpack through Europe, but it means nothing without preparation, commitment, and enthusiasm. If you don’t have these three things, don’t bother trying to change yourself. You’ll only succeed in wasting your own time.

I created this guide in order ensure that once people set goals of any variety, they will be sure to achieve them. Some goals can take anywhere from 5 minutes to even a year to complete, but keep in mind that if you follow all of these steps without fail, there is no doubt that your goal cannot be achieved.

Let’s get started, shall we?

1. Understand why you’re setting goals

Goals that you set for yourself should be just that; for yourself. Don’t set goals to impress others or to compete with someone who has achieved more than you. Setting goals is about personal growth. The fact that you are taking the steps to achieve your goals is admirable in my opinion, but it doesn’t matter what I or anyone else thinks. In the end, you will receive the most benefit from achieving your goals. It doesn’t matter how many people acknowledge you, or how many people like your goal. If you like it, that’s all that matters.

2. Set a realistic goal

Okay, you know you want to change or improve something, but what? Do you want to go out more, or do you want to get good grades. Or do you want to do both? These are all great ideas for goals, but remember to be realistic. Don’t set goals you know you won’t reach or you aren’t 100% sure you will fully commit to. Also keep in mind that you should set about one or two goals. The problem with setting a lot of difficult goals is that you get so overwhelmed by the time that has to be invested into each one that you begin to start slacking off on all of them. Setting one or two is easier to manage and you’ll certainly be more effective in accomplishing them.

3. Make a ‘top goals’ list and narrow it down to two

Write down the best things you wish to accomplish in as much detail as possible. This is important, so put a lot of time and effort into this. Fleshing out your goals will allow you decide which ones are most reasonable to start immediately. A long term goal like “being a movie star” could definitely take a back seat to an immediate short-term one like “get a driver’s license”. Of course, your list can be as long as desired, but remember to pick the ones that are the easiest to get started on.

4. With your one or two goals, make a plan

Make a plan of how you’re going to achieve your goals. What works best for me is to start with steps that are relatively simple, but get more intricate as my progress grows. Let’s say I have set a goal to learn a new language. I can’t just buy a lot of language books and try to read all of them at once, right? I’m going to have to approach this logically. The first step would be to buy comprehensive language texts and audio CD’s for me to study with. Then I would take a class to get direct practice with a presumably native speaker. I would then try and make new friends so we could possibly study outside of the classroom together. It really is that simple to make a plan of action. And if you don’t know how to start your plan, surf the internet and learn how people with similar goals have achieved them.

5. Enthusiasm is the key

Without enthusiasm, no desire can long endure. While you’re in the process of achieving your goal, never stop being excited about it. Whenever you think about it, get happy and get energized. Isn’t the thought of improving yourself enough to bring a smile to your face? Sure, there will be times when you get bored of the steps you are taking in achieving your goals. But that should be an indicator for you to change things up in your plan. Do you eat the same nutritious foods everyday if you want to be healthy? Do you exercise with the same weight if you want to get stronger? Of course not. As time goes on, it’s natural to get used to the plans you have set in motion for yourself. You can remedy this by adding new steps to your plan. Always remember to keep things fresh so your goals don’t get stale.

6. Make time for your goals

Set aside a decent amount of time for each goal. For the best results, do not spend less than 30 minutes on each goal everyday. There will be times when you start to slack off in this area, but it’s actually not that bad. As long as you plan accordingly to account for the time you lost advancing your goals, you’ll be fine. Remember that consistency is crucial to achieving your goals, so slacking off too much will end up being counterproductive.

7. Never give up

This is my favorite step. There are few reasons to give up on achieving your goal, but difficulty is not one of them. For some, working towards an end is natural. For others, it may not be that simple. But no matter how hard it is, no matter how long it seems to take, do not give up. If necessary, incorporate a support group of your family and friends. Let them know you are serious about tackling this goal and no put downs will be tolerated. There’s no point including anyone in your support group who will hinder your progress by criticizing your efforts. The people who care for you will encourage you, push you forward, and try to help any way necessary.

Goals are very important to have, but setting them is just half the battle. To truly take control of what you want in life, you must condition yourself right now by trying my tips for a time period that you think is reasonable. Keep in mind that you can’t possibly complete these steps in only one day; give it time. If you don’t see any notable changes in yourself or advances in your goals, then try adding a little of your own flavor to these steps.

Be prepared for the trials and tribulations that stand in your way, for they are there to help you succeed and not to deter your progress. And if you do nothing else, repeat this phrase daily:

“I will succeed.”

A case for setting goals

  • Posted on July 1, 2009 at 9:05 pm

Dictionary meaning of success is “a desired outcome”. This desired outcome when well defined is called a goal. So why do we need a well defined goal to be set. Lets cover the reasons one by one.

1. Statistical reason: Goal is a measure of success. If you have not defined what your goal was, how do you know wether you were successul. You can only say that you or your team was successful when the goals set at the start were achieved. This becomes all the more important in case your performance is being measured against your set goals.

2. Ensures you hit the right target: The process of brainstorming of what goals should be set, provides opportunity to ensure that the goal is correct. Correct, because one should not mistake an action plan as a goal. For example, getting up at 4:30 am in the morning may not be a goal in itself, the goal could be to send children to school on time.

3. Ensures there’s no collateral damage: If the mind is set too narrowly on the goal, then there are chances that you may end up with collateral damage. It is important that when goals are being thought of the context does not get missed. The completeness of what we really want should not get missed. Let me explain with an example, a manager guns for an extremely tight deadline and is making everyones life on the project miserable to ensure to they don’t miss the target date as it is one of their project performance goals. What happens, some of the key people of the project decide to quit, because they cannot take it any more. Whats gone wrong, there are no goals for limiting attrition and there are no action plans either. Something got totally missed. Completeness hence is the key to reducing collateral damange.

4. Provides platform for improvement: Once you achieve your goals, they become a benchmark of your performance. Now you can look forward to further improve you performance and rethink on your next set of action plans.

5. Brings in commitment: Democratically set goals in project team environments ensures team support and commitment, which in itself is sufficient to pull an otherwise tough project through.

6. Brings joy: Accomplishing goals gives you joy of having achieved what you had set out for. It helps build your credibility in case the goals where shared with others. It helps boost your confidence too.

Developing Your Smart Goals for the Future

  • Posted on July 1, 2009 at 9:05 pm

Would you take a vacation with no itinerary or road map to guide your journey? Would you try to build a doghouse, an entertainment center, or any piece of furniture without looking at the instructions? Hopefully, the answer is no. Yet, many people behave in a similar manner by not putting together goals for their future.

To improve your chances of being successful, particularly in this tough economy, you need to set smart goals for yourself. Here are some tips to get you started.

Think Long Term

What do you hope to achieve as your major life goal or goals? What would you need to accomplish in life to consider yourself successful? Think carefully about these questions and be realistic. The idea of setting goals for yourself is not to have a pie-in-the-sky fantasy that could never amount to anything. The idea is to find ways to accomplish a practical but ultimately satisfying major goal in your life.

You might want to have different types of major goals. For example, you don’t necessarily want your only big life goal to be achieving financial success. You might also want a family or to be good as some type of talent like playing the harp or doing woodcarving.

Consider the Steps

Once you’ve thought about your long term goals, you’ve got to start thinking about what smaller achievements you’ll need to reach on your path to that long-term goal. For example, let’s say you want to become a CEO. What would it take to get to that point? You might need to take some extra classes, perhaps in leadership training. You might want to get a master’s in business administration, if you don’t already have one. These are just a few examples.

For each step along the path, you need to have smart goals set that will build you towards that ultimate goal. Think of them as steps along your path.

Always Stay Realistic

The best way to get discouraged as you’re planning your goals is to start thinking they are impossible. The best way to avoid that mindset is to set realistic goals; things you can see yourself achieving. Start small. For example, if you’re terrified of giving presentations but you know that fear must be overcome to achieve your larger goal then make that one of your smaller goals. Then work towards achieving it.

That’s also important when you making plans: have an idea of how the goal can be achieved. If you have a dream but no concrete method of turning it into a reality, chances are good those smart goals are going to stay unfulfilled.

Moving Forward

After you’ve established your goals, you need to begin working on achieving them so you can keep moving towards your ultimate smart goals. Each time you are successful, think of some great way to reward yourself for a job well done. That motivation is going to keep pushing you forward in the right direction.

Personal Development – Tips on Goal Setting

  • Posted on July 1, 2009 at 9:05 pm

Personal development cannot be achieved without having clear-cut goals first. How will you be able to ascertain that you have really improved physically, emotionally, mentally or even spiritually if you do not have a basis? Moreover, if you have no idea where you want to go, what things you want to change, or what victories you want to achieve, there is a big chance that you will not be able to make most out of your abilities. Constantly challenging yourself and setting higher goals for you to achieve as the years pass by will also help you become a better person inside and out. So, before you start mapping your way to personal improvement, you first need to master goal setting because your goals will be the foundation to your path to self-improvement and development.

The first step to setting your personal development goals is to look inside yourself and think of the things that you really want to achieve. Are you having problems with your waist and want to achieve better health and wellness? Are you interested in getting rich and learning stock market strategies? Is wealth creation your primary goal so that you could give your family a better life? Once you have learned what your deepest desires are, you can start turning your wishes into viable goals. However, it is important that you make your goals achievable. Take one step at a time. Many people get discouraged by failures because they reach for the sky too soon. It would be better if you do it slowly so that you also start to discover yourself in the process. So, if you are planning to trim down your body from 350 to 120 pounds, you should not expect that you would lose 220 pounds in just six months because it is simply not realizable and it can also be unhealthy for you.

The next step is for you to think of ways in which you can achieve your personal development goals. Many people fail or feel like failing because they get stuck to dreaming and setting goals. If getting rich is your ultimate desire, then watching television all day long will not bring you any closer to your wealth creation objectives. So, what you need to do is to find tangible plans on how you can reach your goals. If you want to become a home based entrepreneur, then you have to start planning where you will get money to invest in your business, what business you want to get yourself into, what your backup plans are just in case you fail. Remember that goals will remain goals and not realities if you do not start to step up and plan.

The last step is to take action. Again, goal setting and planning will bring you nowhere if you do not act on them. However, you also need to understand that the road to personal development is not a straight and flat road. More often than not, before you can achieve your goals, you need to accept the fact that the road to self-improvement is a long and winding one.
