Is this normal behavior of my toddler after getting over stomach flu?

  • Posted on November 20, 2010 at 7:24 pm

my 20-mon-old daughter had the stomach flu on saturday through about yesterday (tuesday). She vomited 6-7 times on saturday, a milky, liquidy texture, and didn’t eat or drink anything besides breast milk on sunday. on mon she had some regular milk and water (since that’s all she would drink0 and a popsicle. I tried giving her pedialyte freezewr pops, and pedialyte liquid, but she kept refusing. I offered the pedialyte and also other drinks like juice etc. on Tuesday in both bottles and sippy cups and open cups but she just refused no matter what.thankfully i still nurse her, bc that’s what kept her hydrated but I know my supply is low b/c I don’t do it as much as I used to and suddenly she wanted to do it again like a newborn.
Is it normal that she’s regressed? She has no appetite still even though she hasn’t vomited since mon morning. All she will eat for sure is the fruit-flavored cheerios with or without milk, and to drink for sure is my milk, or cow milk in a bottle. Sometimes she will drink water from a sippy cup but that’s it. I was overjoyed when today I got her to drink 3 oz of apple juice which put her to sleep. But I had to change the bottle it was in to her “favorite” bottle.
So my question is, is it normal for her to still not want to eat almost nothing, and to mainly just want breastmilk or cow milk again? Is it normal for her to suddenly have become turned off from the sippy cup, and from non-milk liquids? Is it normal for a toddler to not drink pedialyte when sick from a bottle or cup, or popsicle form, and act like it’s poison? (she’s never needed it before). And how will in the future i get her to drink that stuff if she gets sick like this again? I dread her getting vomiting and diahrreah again but worse and when I’m no longer nursing. Maybe when they’re older they are easier to reason with?
Yesterday btw all she had was dry colored/fruit-flavored cheerios, pieces of an apple, 2 bites of a baked potato, and a 1/3 cup of applesauce. Today she had next to nothing: a bowl of fruit cheerios w/milk, parts of an apple she nibbled at, and 4 french fries. Refused the yogurt i offered her. Also she is sleeping more. she still has periods of alertness and playfulness and her old self. I just want to know from other moms is this normal considering she’s getting over the stomach flu?
I caught the sickness too and 2 days later still feel weak for the record and a lack of appetite, but I’m not particularly tired like she is.
i already took her to the doctor—this was mon. all they told me was what I already knew.

Letting Go
In our stressful world, it is important to develop an ability to let things go easily. This is vital for our mental and spiritual health. Try to find moment in the day or at the end of the day, where you can let go and release everything that has happened. This is especially important to do before bedtime. You may like to fill an imaginary balloon with any stresses and anxieties and let it go, or try throwing unwanted thoughts and feelings and watch them disappear or float away. Use your imagination, be creative and make this an enjoyable experience for yourself.

Eat Slowly
When we are rushing from one activity to another, it is easy to forget to look after ourselves and just eat on the go. If you can, try to sit down to eat and eat as slowly as possible – enjoying every mouthful. Your body will thank you for this and you will feel the benefits of deep relaxation. If you can, bless your food or say a short prayer for a few moments. This may sound strange, but there have been studies that our thoughts and intentions can have a profound effect on our food.

Smile
Even if you don’t feel like it – smile. Watch as this little facial expression can make a difference to your mood. For a deep relaxation, try this Buddist exercise of tummy smiling. Imagine you are smiling from the depths of your stomach. As you practise this, you will find that you instantly feel more relaxed and content.

Take a Break
If you are able to stop during the day, schedule a short 5-10 minutes break for yourself. This will help you feel more calm and in control. Use these few minutes to experience deep inner calm and silence. Just allow your thoughts to slow down, let go of the tension in your neck and shoulders and imagine you are being showered by drops of peace and a bubble. If you have time, kick off your shoes and socks and walk on the grass outside. As you build up a practise of this, you will notice how you can be refreshed and rejuvenated in just a short time.

Stop and Breathe
Stop for a few moments and let your mind become still. Take in a deep breath and breathe in a feeling of peace. As you breathe out, breathe out peace into the room. Close your eyes and give yourself a 30 second face massage. End with a brisk rub of the ears for a fantastic rejuvenator.

Practice Meditation
Sit or lie down and let your mind drift away with this meditation.

Close your eyes, be very still and imagine you are lying down on the beach. Feel the warm sand underneath your body. You can hear the waves of the sea.
Now, very gently you are going to relax each part of your body. Start with your feet, let your toes completely relax and become soft. Now release all the tension in your ankles and let your legs become soft and heavy. Relax the muscles in your tummy and back, feel your back sinking into the soft golden sand. Let your shoulders and neck become soft and heavy as all the tension melts away. Your arms feel heavy as they sink deeply into the warm sand. And now let your head completely relax. Relax your eyes, your ears, your cheeks, your jaw, your forehead. Become completely still and relaxed. Feel the warm sun on your face and body as you sink further into the lovely soft sand.
Enjoy this wonderful feeling of being calm and peaceful. Stay there for a few more moments, enjoying the feeling of being completely relaxed. Extract from The Wishing Star and Nature CD

Life is what we make it as the cliché often goes without failing. With the goal to make the most out of life, we are all confronted with all sorts of stress that can hamper our way to achieving the success we have always wanted. If this stress is not addressed to immediately it will take its toll on us, thus eventually giving us all sorts of health problems.

There are many kinds of sources of stress. These are physical, emotional, mental, spiritual, and financial among other things. The question as to which one is most prominent greatly depends on the person who is affected and how the individual is coping with the stress.

Hence some companies offer stress management workshops to individuals or groups to help them how to manage stress that will soon affect them at one time or the other. However, the way each one of use cope with stress is also greatly determined by the stress itself. If the stress is positive in nature, the stress management workshops will tell us that such stress can generate energy that will propel us to pursue projects that we get so excited about. It goes without saying that our adrenalin is telling us that we have to do something before that level of anticipation starts to wane thus ripping us our interest to proceed.

If the stress has a possible negative effect or coming from a negative source then obviously all that we have to learn from the many stress management workshops available for us today is how to handle them without fear, instead with confidence. This sort of stress can give us feeling of frustrations, anger, low self-esteem, and thus making us unproductive, tired and totally drained in all aspects—physical, mental, financial, spiritual, and emotional.

If a negative stress is not managed immediately and appropriately it may well affect our immune system making us prone to simple cases of headaches, olds, coughs, and stomach upset. Back pains and muscle pains are also some of the physical effects of stress. Moreover, stress can also strain our relationship with our family, friends and the people in the workplace and if not managed accordingly can very well affect our performance of duties and responsibilities both at home and at work.

Stress management workshops should not only give us information on the different sources of stress and their corresponding effects on us. More importantly they should be able to provide us with a doable solution and the one that are not hard to follow that might give us another stress in the long run. More anything else what we need is the assurance that all sort of stress can be remedied and are not totally destructive.

When you are inspired by some great purpose, some extraordinary project, all your thoughts break their bonds, your mind transcends limitations, your consciousness expands in every direction, and you find yourself in a new, great, and wonderful world, dormant forces, faculties, and talents become alive, and you discover yourself to be a greater person by far than you ever dreamed yourself to be

Steps to take control of your breathing and take control of your life

Take Control of your breathing and take control of your life

Breathing is a vital life force of all human beings. It is the way that energy is transported around the body and is the body’s automatic cleansing system. Breathing is linked to the autonomic and limbic system within the body which are partially responsible for emotions and states. By controlling our breathing we can control our emotions.

Try these breathing exercises.

Step One

Take a deep breath in and then exhale out about a tenth of your lung capacity and inhale to fill up again, this is shallow breathing.

When you are breathing it helps if you rest one hand on your stomach to check that your stomach raises when you inhale. This will be your check that you are breathing correctly.

Do this ten times and check how you are feeling, when you get use to doing this exercise you can increase the repetitions.

At first it will feel a little strange but with time you will get use to it. Over time you will feel better and more motivated.

Step Two

Breathe in slowly to the count of eight, rest your hand on your stomach to check that you are breathing correctly. Breathe out slowly to the count of six contracting your stomach.

At first do this five times and with practice increase to ten and then fifteen.

You should feel calm; I love this one because it makes me feel really good. This exercise is also used in meditation.

I have done these exercises with my clients and they have reported that they feel really relaxed and motivated to take on their challenges of the day.

I hope that this will help you and would love to hear from you with your feedback.
