SOUTHEAST – A community reeling from grief and unsettled by anger came together today to remember the lives of Lori and Kayla Donahue and to face wrenching questions of justice and mercy.
Hundreds gathered at Trinity Lutheran Church to mourn the staggering loss of Lori, 37, and her 8-year-old daughter, Kayla, who died Monday when they were struck by an alleged drunken driver as they left the girl’s dance class in Brewster.
Relatives huddled together and wept in the front of the church, where the Donahue family had worshiped and attended a party only days before.
The Rev. Kathleen Koran, pastor of Trinity Lutheran, led the funeral service and confronted the community’s anger toward Zacaria Conses-Garcia, a 35-year-old unlicensed, illegal immigrant from Guatemala, who was indicted on two counts of aggravated vehicular homicide Friday and faces up to 25 years in prison.
“We have to figure out what do next,” Koran said. “Who are we? How do go on being? There are times when words fail us.”The Rev. Bob Donahue, husband of Lori and father of Kayla, sat in the front pew, holding his 5-year-old son, Christopher.
Koran reminded the congregation that there are times when all are imperfect in their decisions.
“Who will be the judge?” she asked. “There is one. One who fully considered the consequences of his actions … His name is Jesus.”
She added: “Justice must have its voice, but let mercy have its voice, too.”
Police said Conses-Garcia’s blood-alcohol content was nearly twice the legal limit when he allegedly failed to make a left-hand turn onto routes 6 and 22 from Main Street and hit Lori and Kayla Donahue near Seven Stars School of Performing Arts.
The federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency is also seeking custody of Conses-Garcia.
