Weight loss and self hypnosis

  • Posted on July 2, 2009 at 11:42 pm

There is a perception among some people that self hypnosis can independently be used to lose weight. This is a wrong perception, as self hypnosis is used as a tool to make changes in your subconscious mind, which will help you in losing weight fast by changing some of your bad habits that are resulting in over weight.

Over weight can result in negative emotions like anger, lack of confidence and depression. Some causes of weight gain are over eating, excessive alcohol, drugs and absolute lack of any physical activity.

Over weight can be due to different reasons like physical, psychological and genetic. The toughest to cure is genetic. A person suffering from this kind of obesity had to undergo surgery to remove extra fat from his body. Physical reason may include some disease, like it has been seen that some people gain weight dramatically after prolonged fever. Psychological reasons include the reasons related to mind.

When ever any one goes for hypnosis session, there is a prehypnosis test that every one has to go through. In this test the psychological health of the person who is undergoing hypnosis is evaluated to find out the negative feelings that may be hidden inside his subconscious mind. If these feelings do exist, then the job of the hypnotist is to help the person to get rid of these feelings.

Important thing to remember is that if a person does not want to get hypnotize, no one in the world can hypnotize him. So all these fears, that you will become some kind of slave are totally baseless. Best results come when both the hypnotist and the person undergoing hypnotism work in accord with each other. In case of self hypnosis also, you have to believe in hypnotism to get some sort of result. Having said that, you don’t have to be a believer in truest sense of the word, but at least you should not distrust the process before actually going through it.

Self hypnosis can take care of both physical and psychological problems. Self hypnosis works on subconscious mind. All the experiences that we go through in our daily lives are stored in the subconscious mind and over time these experiences takes form of habits and hidden desires. You may notice that sometimes you react almost automatically, the truth is that our subconscious mind is doing this and we don’t even know. Self hypnosis will help you in harnessing the power of subconscious mind.

Common Symptoms of Clinical Depression.

  • Posted on July 1, 2009 at 7:36 pm

Clinical Depression is a catch all phrase for any number of depressive disorders. The symptoms of clinical depression affect everyone who suffers from it in different ways. Depression affects people across all age ranges, genders, ethnicities, cultures and religions. According to the American Psychiatric Association over 17 million men and women in the U.S. suffer from some form of clinical depression every year.

Clinical depression is very different then the normal “blue” moods most people go through during their lives. Most people react to major let downs and traumatic experiences in their lives such as breakups of relationships or deaths of family or friends the same way. They have a period of mourning or just feeling in the dumps but after a few days to a week they start to return to their normal selves.

Clinical depression sufferers do not snap out of their depressed moods. They can spend weeks, months and even years trapped in their malaise. It is the length of the feelings and symptoms that will confirm a diagnosis of clinical depression but many people who suffer from this illness do not seek the help they need. They may not even realize that they are indeed suffering from a form of depression because their current condition has slowly manifested itself over a long period of time.

The common symptoms of clinical depression can be broken up into three categories. Any combination of these symptoms that last for more than a two week period of time signifies that someone is suffering with depression.

1. Physical Symptoms:
• Sleep problems – either insomnia or oversleeping and not having normal sleep patterns.

• Lack of energy and chronic fatigue

• Appetite changes leading to weight gain or loss.

• Headaches, digestive problems, back pain and other physical symptoms for which there is no medical illness.

2. Behavioral Symptoms:
• Loosing interest in hobbies and activities that were once enjoyable. Withdrawing from social functions and obligations.

• Memory loss, inability to concentrate and make good decisions.

• Lack of concern over personal appearance, responsibilities and work.

3. Emotional Symptoms:
• Feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness and guilt.

• Continual feelings of sadness or not feeling whole.

• Constant crying and weeping.

• Irritable feelings including anxiousness and agitation.

• Feeling like suicide or death is an alternative to living.

If any combination of these symptoms last for more than two weeks then a diagnosis of clinical depression will in most cases be made. Only by seeking out and receiving the proper treatment, either through medication, therapy, or a combination of the two, will the sufferer of clinical depression be able to start the road to recovery.

What Is The Problem With Depression Medication ?

  • Posted on July 1, 2009 at 7:36 pm

The main issue with depression medication is that it is a hit and miss affair. The first problem is that as the drug companies are not exactly sure how these medications work on the brain, results can vary enormously from individual to individual. The second problem is that these drugs work mainly on increasing serotonin which is fine except that serotonin is also responsible for controlling our appetite. Weight gain and weight loss will figure prominently as a result among the side effects. The third problem is that overall, while some patients will gain a lot of benefit from this depression medication, many will never be cured and face years of treatment with very modest results.

The earlier anti depression medication like the tricyclics and the Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) such as Marplan and Nardil were even riskier and with the latter patients had to avoid dairy and alcohol as there was a dangerous interaction with the drugs. The newer drugs (the SSRIs) are much safer overall and there are certainly less alarming side effects but there is still a long list to deal with.

With SSRIs, such as Luvox, Paxil, Prozac and Zoloft, the main side effect seems to be a loss of sex drive and impotence in men while women will have problems in reaching orgasm. Other problems are with weight gain, nausea and jittery feelings. Add to those insomnia , headaches and vertigo and you will see that taking these medicines is no picnic. Reactions will vary from person to person and some people manage to cope with the side effects with greater ease and confidence without falling into further depression ! Are these drugs anti depression medication or not?

A newer drug called Wellbutrin has been used with some success and it seems to avoid some of the sexual problems associated with the drugs mentioned above and also the problem of putting on weight. This drug acts on two of the neurotransmitters in the brain, norepinephrine and dopamine. But Wellbutrin has its own problems in that it can actually reduce appetite so patients are faced with weight loss, constipation, insomnia, anxiety, diarrhea, drowsiness and dry mouth.

Yet a newer class of depression medication which increases levels of serotonin and norepinephrine such as Cymbalta and Remeron fare only a little better but still have a fairly daunting list of possible side effects. These include blurred vision, tremor, chills and feeling lightheaded. Cymbalta can raise blood pressure, increase sweating and loss of energy.

You can see why thousands of people are seeking alternatives to depression medication. One answer has been found in natural treatment for depression with herbal remedies. Research shows that in many cases , especially with mild and moderate depression and SAD (seasonal affective disorder), these remedies are just as effective as the classic depression medication and have much fewer side effects.
